Residents play a fundamental role in the quality of tourists’experiences and satisfaction derived from a visit and, thus,in the success of a tourism destination. This paper addresses the perceptions that residents have the impacts of tourism on Madeira Island,a mature tourism destination.Based on data extracted from a survey administered to residents during August and September 2018,we inquired on the extent to which they maintain a positive perception of the impacts of the tourist industry. The survey tried to address the residents’perceptions of economic, cultural, social,or environmental impacts. In the analysis of the data, both descriptive and multivariable statistical methods were used. The empirical results attained indicate that residents feel that there is no excess of tourism on the island. They do not fail to realize that there are a few negative consequences, but the positive ones got better scores on average.Being an inhabitant of an urban or a rural site did not seem to influence differently the perceptions gathered on the contribution of tourism to the overall development of Madeira Island. This type of analysis can serve as a useful tool for tourism planners and managers in order to prevent or minimize eventual negative impacts of the tourism industry as felt by the local inhabitants and, thus, for creating the required policies. 展开更多

Tourism can have both positive and negative outcomes for residents in tourism destinations, It is a good method to analyze the status of tourism impact by means of investigating residents' perceptions of it. Various methods have been used in previous authoritative studies. However, owing to inherent imprecision, difficulties always exist in some conventional methodologies when describing the interpretation of linguistic or measured uncertainties for real-world randoln phenomena. The purpose of this research is to present the fuzzy synthetic evaluation method to investigate residents' perceptions of tourisln impacts. At first, basic attributes and a hierarchical framework of tourism impacts are defined and formed. Secondly, the weighted vectors are determined according to the knowledge and experience of experts. Thirdly, the weighted evaluation matrices are aggregated to get the fuzzy sets of tourism impacts. In the last stage, the final fuzzy sets are defuzzified to get the rank of the residents' perceptions of tourism impacts. A case study in Jiuzhaigou National Park of China is provided to demonstrate the application of this method. 展开更多

Based on the questionnaire investigation, the authors make a comparative study on local residents′ perception of tourism impacts in Xidi, Zhouzhuang and Jiuhua Mountain. The result shows that residents of the three places tend to have strong and consistent perception of its positive economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts, but distinctly diverse ones of its negative impacts. Residents in Xidi and Zhouzhuang also have noticeable perception of its negative environmental impacts while those in Jiuhua Mountain have weaker perception of them. The research confirms the fact that residents are more liable to have positive perceptions at the early stage of the life cycle of the tourist places. The authors conclude that there exists a nonlinear relationship between residents′ perception and tourism development stages, and that tourism socio-cultural impact may appear at an early stage of tourism development instead of being no universal. 展开更多

With the rapid development of rural tourism in China, community residents,as important stakeholders in the development of rural tourism, their perceptions and attitudes directly affect the sustainable and healthy development of local rural tourism.Taking the community residents of Xiaogucheng Village in Hangzhou as the research object, using the methods of field interviews and questionnaires,a multiple regression model was established to conduct an empirical analysis on the perception and main factors affecting the development of rural tourism of community residents. The results show that the development of rural tourism in villages with better economic development is not as popular as expected;Where community residents have made ideological progress and are willing to participate in tourism development, the development effect of rural tourism is remarkable; In addition, community residents also hope that their personal abilities can be combined with rural tourism for common development; The destruction of community environment has a slight impact on the development of rural tourism, which shows that the attention is not enough. Finally, based on the analysis conclusion,it provides new ideas and inspiration for the sustainable development of rural tourism:improving the community residents’participation in rural tourism system, establishing the guidance mechanism of community residents’tourism vocational education, and consolidating the achievements of community ecological environment management. 展开更多

Spain is the country with the most Biosphere Reserves in the world,52,and Asturias, with 7,ranks first among the single-province Autonomous Communities. The tourist interest in these natural spaces is increasing, but little or nothing is known about how the residents of these natural spaces perceive the tourist impacts. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the residents’perceived changes in protected mountain areas in Asturias concerning the environmental, sociocultural, and economic dimensions related to tourism activity with survey methods and various quantitative tools. The findings obtained were the following:firstly, there were significant differences between the residents’sociodemographic characteristics and their perceptions of tourism impacts;secondly, there were positive relationships between the residents’perceived tourism economic, environmental and sociocultural impacts and their general attitude towards tourism development;and thirdly, the more positive the residents’attitude towards tourism development, the more likely residents actively support its further development. The findings indicate the willingness of residents to get involved and participate in the tourism activity,so policymakers should implicate residents in decisionmaking on local tourism development. In conclusion,long-term monitoring of residents’evolution of their perceptions and attitudes is necessary to achieve sustainable tourism development. 展开更多

Valley economy is a type of economy that comprehensively utilizes the natural economic and social resources of the region based on environmental protection. This economy utilizes the basic role of the market in disposing resources and achieving regional development and social progress. In this paper we studied the town of Yanqi, a valley resort that has developed tourism-based valley economy for several years in the mountainous area of Beijing. This research identifies the spatial differentiation of tourism-related economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impact and level of support for tourism according to the perception and attitude of residents of Yanqi. The research area was divided into three zones(i.e., core, transition, and peripheral)according to the standard proposed by Jaakson. The residents in all three zones showed a positive attitude toward the tourism industry, and the residents in the core zone had a stronger perception toward the impact of tourism. However, several items indicated the converse. Correlation analysis and analysis of variance were used to explore the correlative factors associated with the attitudes of residents toward the tourism industry. Results indicated major differences among the three zones. Multiple factors, including natural conditions, policies, scenic spots, dependence on the tourism industry, and external investment in the three zones resulted in the spatial differentiation of the perception and attitude of residents toward the impact of tourism. 展开更多

A favorable tourism image of high-quality mountain scenic spots(HQMSS)is crucial for tourism prosperity and sustainability. This paper establishes a framework for investigating the tourism image based on cognitive-emotion theory and uses natural language processing(NLP)tools to clarify the cognition, emotion, and overall tourist image of the HQMSS in China from the perspective of tourist perception. This paper examines the multi-dimensional spatial differentiation of China's overall image, including province, scenic spot scales,as well as the spatial pattern of the overall comprehensive tourism image.Strategies for comprehensively improving HQMSS's tourism image are also formulated. The results show that:(1)The cognitive image of Chinese HQMSS is categorized into core and marginal images, and the core images such as scenery and cable car are the expression of the uniqueness of mountainous scenic spots.Additionally, the cognitive image is classified into six dimensions:tourism environment, tourism supporting facilities, tourism experience, tourism price, tourism service, and tourism safety.(2)Positive emotions are the dominant mood type of HQMSS in China, followed by neutral emotions, with negative emotions being the least frequent.Emotional images vary across dimensions, with tourism environment and tourism experience evoking relatively higher emotion.(3)The spatial pattern of HQMSS for each dimension at the national, provincial, and scenic scales is diversifying. This article provides a multidimensional perspective for investigating the tourism image of mountainous scenic spots, proposes targeted recommendations to improve the overall image of HQMSS in China, and can greatly contribute to the sustainable development of mountain tourism. 展开更多

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges to the tourism sector globally. We investigated changes in visitor demographics, satisfaction level, and its determinants pre-and peri-COVID-19.Data were collected using questionnaire surveys in 2019 and 2021 within Banff National Park(BNP).The data analyses were based on a sample size of 1183 respondents by conducting factor analysis, correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis. Results highlight that there were fewer international visitors and more local and domestic visitors during the pandemic.Park attributes were evaluated at a higher satisfaction level peri-COVID-19.The quality of the Park facilities and services were the most important satisfaction determinants pre-and peri-COVID-19,and all the Park COVID-19 measures and actions received positive experience from visitors. This research fills this knowledge gap by developing a better understanding in the change of visitor demographics and satisfaction level in BNP under the context of the pandemic. It also provides implication for both scholars and practitioners to understand the impacts of the pandemic on Park visitation. The study can provide insights for utilizing the pandemic as a transformative strength and for mitigating its negative impact on tourism industry. 展开更多

The change in residents′ perception and attitude and resort life cycle are the basic problems in the course of resort evolution. This thesis sets up the dynamic model of residents′perception and attitude, analyzes the linkage between residents′ perception and attitude and the influential factors of resort life cycle, and finally, with a case study of Putuo Mountain, preliminarily discusses the relationship between resort life cycle and residents′perception and attitude. The research findings show that, although within development stage of life cycle, Putuo Mountain has already presented some signs of mature stage. The on-the-spot survey also indicates that, the local residents′ positive perception is stronger than their negative perception. But compared with residents in some other coastal resorts such as Haikou and Sanya, negative perception of residents in Putuo Mountain is more evident, as the result of the smaller tourism carrying capacity in Putuo Mountain. There are some influential factors that have great impact on tourism carrying capacity in Putuo Mountain: tourist-resident number ratio, residents′ benefit-cost ratio and characteristics of tourism resources. And the less influential factors are residents′ demographic character, tourist behavioral character and cultural differences between local residents and tourists. Therefore, effective measures should be taken to adjust the structure of tourism product for the purpose of expanding tourism carrying capacity, lowering its pressure, lessening residents′ environmental cost and enhancing their positive perception, which is the most essential prerequisite for the maturation of life cycle in Putuo Mountain. 展开更多

By capturing the online evaluation data of tourists on Zhuhai coastal tourist attractions in the two domestic OTA platforms Ctrip and Mafengwo, word cloud and word frequency statistics and complex semantic network analysis are used to carry out the research of image perception and emotional evaluation. The results show that:① Zhuhai City is the main body of the composition of tourists' image perception of Zhuhai coastal tourism, showing the 3S(seafood, sand, scenery) coastal tourism image of Zhuhai characteristics, and the rapid development of Zhuhai City is an important driving force for the transformation of the city's image perception.② The single core and two wings is the hierarchical pattern of tourists' image perception of Zhuhai's coastal tourism, namely Zhuhai as the centre and sand and seafood as the two wings.③ After evaluating the emotions of tourists in Zhuhai's coastal area, it is found that overall the tourists' perceived image is relatively good, with a large proportion of positive emotions, but there are also some negative and neutral emotions. 展开更多

This study examines the urban population of tourism practitioners' perceptions of economic, environmental, and social impacts on cultural, convention, and sport tourism may have in Haikou and Sanya, Hainan, China. The study uses a modif ied Urban Tourism Impact (UTI) to examine economic, environmental, and social perceived impacts. Analysis of the data includes testing three models of structural relationships between tourism impacts and support for development in each of the tourism market sub-divisions through a confirmatory factor analysis. The results of this study show that the positive economic impacts consistently exert influence on predicting support for tourism development in all three models. However, the social impacts play a greater explanatory role with all three market segment, the negative environmental impacts play a role in determining support for sport tourism only. Differences have been found with those with a higher education level in predicting support for cultural tourism, but not convention or sport tourism. 展开更多
