Ferritic/martensitic(F/M)steel is widely used as a structural material in thermal and nuclear power plants.However,it is susceptible to intergranular damage,which is a critical issue,under service conditions.In this study,to improve the resistance to intergranular damage of F/M steel,a thermomechanical process(TMP)was employed to achieve a grain boundary engineering(GBE)microstructure in F/M steel P92.The TMP,including cold-rolling thickness reduction of 6%,9%,and 12%,followed by austenitization at 1323 K for 40 min and tempering at 1053 K for 45 min,was applied to the as-received(AR)P92 steel.The prior austenite grain(PAG)size,prior austenite grain boundary character distribution(GBCD),and connectivity of prior austenite grain boundaries(PAGBs)were investigated.Compared to the AR specimen,the PAG size did not change significantly.The fraction of coincident site lattice boundaries(CSLBs,3≤Σ≤29)and Σ3^(n) boundaries along PAGBs decreased with increasing reduction ratio because the recrystallization fraction increased with increasing reduction ratio.The PAGB connectivity of the 6%deformed specimen slightly deteriorated compared with that of the AR specimen.Moreover,potentiodynamic polarization studies revealed that the intergranular damage resistance of the studied steel could be improved by increasing the fraction of CSLBs along the PAGBs,indicating that the TMP,which involves low deformation,could enhance the intergranular damage resistance. 展开更多

The present study deals with development of conceptual proof for jute rubber based flexible composite block to completely arrest the projectile impacting the target at high velocity impact of 400 m/s through numerical simulation approach using finite element(FE)method.The proposed flexible composite blocks of repeating jute/rubber/jute(JRJ)units are modelled with varying thickness from 30 mm to 120 mm in increments of 30 mm and impacted by flat(F),ogival(O)and hemispherical(HS)shaped projectiles.All the considered projectiles are impacted with proposed flexible composite blocks of different thicknesses and the penetration behaviour of the projectile in each case is studied.The penetration depth of the projectile in case of partially penetrated cases are considered and the effect of thickness and projectile shape on percentage of penetration depth is statistically analyzed using Taguchi’s design of experiments(DOE).Results reveal that the though proposed flexible composite block with thickness of 90 mm is just sufficient to arrest the complete penetration of the projectile,considering the safety issues,it is recommended to use the flexible composite with thickness of 120 mm.The nature of damage caused by the projectile in the flexible composite is also studied.Statistical studies show that thickness of the block plays a prominent role in determining the damage resistance of the flexible composite. 展开更多

The existing problems in toughened resin evaluation technology, particularly the disadvantage of the toughened resin identification method by CAI, is pointed out based on the point of view of composite structure design. It is proposed to evaluate the toughness of composites by both damage resistance and damage tolerance. Seven different toughness composites are investigated by impact and quasi\|static indentation tests. Based on experimental data analysis, the parameter that is most sensitive to the damage resistance is determined as the damage parameter. The parameter to evaluate the damage resistance and its measuring method are proposed. 展开更多

The laser shock processing implemented by a laser-induced high-pressure plasma which propagates into the sample as a shockwave is innovatively applied as a post-processing technique on HfO_(2)/SiO_(2) multilayer coatings for the first time.The pure mechanical post-processing has provided evidence of a considerable promotion effect of the laser-induced damage threshold,which increased by a factor of about 4.6 with appropriate processing parameters.The promotion mechanism is confirmed to be the comprehensive modification of the intrinsic defects and the mechanical properties,which made the applicability of this novel post-processing technique on various types of coatings possible.Based on experiments,an interaction equation for the plasma pressure is established,which clarifies the existence of the critical pressure and provides a theoretical basis for selecting optimal processing parameters.In addition to the further clarification of the underlying damage mechanism,the laser shock post-processing provides a promising technique to realize the comprehensive and effective improvement of the laser-induced damage resistance of coatings. 展开更多

This research focused on how to improve damage resistance of carbon fiber laminates. It was carried out at Cranfield University Composites Centre, Milton Keynes, UK as an MSc by research thesis project. A series of low-cost composite laminates, with or without novel veils provided by Tenax, was manufactured using current aircraft carbon fiber preforms via vacuum infusion (VI) molding in this research. All the investigations on damage resistance of these panels were carried out according to the British Standard (BS ISO 18353:2009). Initial damage was induced using a falling weight apparatus mounting a 16 mm hemispherical tip. C-scan and Micrograph were employed to reveal damage characteristics. Finally, both compression after impact (CAI) and plain compression strength were experimented. The behaviors of these panels, including damage size, damage construction, residual compression strength, and compression strength reduction, were utilized to investigate how and to what extent the veils affected the damage resistance. The results show that using veils is an efficient method of improving the damage resistance of the laminates studied. Maximum 32% increase in residual compression strength is achieved via veils accompanying with 7% increase in cost. 展开更多

The content includes: (1)The dent depth is the best parameter describing the impact damage state. (2) There exists the knee point phenomenon for damage resistance behavior (i.e. the relationship between impact energy or contact force and dent depth) and damage tolerance behavior (i.e. the relationship between dent depth and compressive failure strain or stress) of composite laminates. (3) The physical meaning of the knee point phenomenon is that the failure mechanisms change of damaged composites to fiber breakage in the first front plies from matrix crack and delamination. The combination of deep wet etching and a magneto-rheological finishing (MRF) process is investigated to simultaneously improve laser damage resistance of a fused-silica surface at 355 nm. The subsequently deposited SiO2 coatings are researched to clarify the impact of substrate finishing technology on the coatings. It is revealed that a deep removal proceeding from the single side or double side had a significant impact on the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the fused silica, especially for the rear surface. After the deep etching, the MRF process that followed does not actually increase the LIDT, but it does ameliorate the surface qualities without additional LIDT degradation. The combination guarantee both the integrity of the surface's finish and the laser damage resistance of the fused silica and subsequent SiO2 coatings. 展开更多

Spores are the biological structures formed out of sporulation from vegetative cells in adverse conditions.Being tolerant to many extreme environment and conditions,they escape and survives critical processing steps in the food industry that poses food and health safety problems,as is evident from the increase in reports of food-bome outbreaks due to spore-fomers.Electromagnetic radiation(EM)is used for rapid decontamination and sterilization purposes in the food industry.Many studies have reported a greater reduction in spore population upon irradiation with EM rays due to its impact on genomic material and other components of spores that destabilises overall structue and brings clonogenic death However,there is scattered literature regarding the mechanism of its inactivation and resistance against such damage.This review attempts to concisely evaluate the potential of electromagnetic radiations in spore inactivation and details its mechanism through a collective study of scientific results and repouts.It also briefs about the process of sporulation,the structure of spores and the role of its components in the resistance of spores to damage.Many studies,which demonstrated that combining various EM treatments might be an effective way for inactivation of spores,were discussed in detail. 展开更多
