The resistance percentage of 34 varieties constituting 4.4% of the total was up to 80-100%, while that of 109 moderate resistance varieties constituting 14. 2% of the total was up to 60 -79%. The other 625 varieties were susceptible. Moreover, 74 highly resistant varieties were tested and divided by 10 races from the 7 groups. There were 4 types with resistance percentage up to 90% ,and 3 types with resistance percentage up to 80%. According to the distribution of the dominant physiological races in different areas .resistant varieties can be selected to facilitate variety rotation. The results above showed that the spectrum of resistance was relatively stable and had a practical value to production and breeding.展开更多

An increasing body of evidence has shown that the MAPK-mediated cellular signaling is crucial to plant growth and development, as well as biotic and abiotic stress responses. To date, a total of 17 MAPK genes have been Identified from the rice genome. Expression profiling, biochemical characterization and/or functional analysis were carried out with many members of the rice MAPK gene family, especially those associated with biotic and abiotic stress responses. In this review, the phylogenetic relationship and classification of rice MAPK genes are discussed to facilitate a simple nomenclature and standard annotation of the rice MAPK gene family. Functional data relating to biotic and abiotic stress responses are reviewed for each MAPK group and show that despite overlapping in functionality, there is a certain level of functional specificity among different rice MAP kinases. The future challenges are to functionally characterize each MAPK, to identify their downstream substrates and upstream kinases, and to genetically manipulate the MAPK signaling pathway in rice crops for the Improvement of agronomically important traits.展开更多

Using a combination of genetic and biochemical experiments, we charac-terized the rice protein OsJAC1, which consists of a jacalin-related lectin (JRL) domain predicted to bind mannose-containing oligosaccharides, and a dirigent domain which might function in stereoselective coupling of monolignols. Transgenic overexpression of OsJAC1 in rice resulted in quantitative broad- spectrum resistance against different pathogens including bacteria, oomycetes, and fungi. Overexpression of this gene or its wheat ortholog TAJA1 in barley enhanced resistance against the powdery mildew fungus. Both protein domains of OsJAC1 are required to establish resistance as indicated by single or combined transient expression of individual domains. Expression of artificially separated and fluorescence-tagged protein domains showed that the JRL domain is sufficient for targeting the powdery mildew penetration site. Nevertheless, co-localization of the lectin and the dirigent domain occurred. Phylogenetic analyses re- vealed orthologs of OsJAC1 exclusively within the Poaceae plant family. Dicots, by contrast, only contain proteins with either JRL or dirigent domain(s). Altogether, our results identify OsJAC1 as a representative of a novel type of resistance protein derived from a plant lineage-specific gene fusion event for better function in local pathogen defense.展开更多

The first reported rice MAPK gene BWMK1 Is Induced by both rice blast (Magnaporthe grisea) Infection and mechanical wounding. For further analysis of Its response to other environmental cues and plant hormones, such as jasmonlc acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and benzothladlazole (BTH), the promoter of BWMKf was fused with the coding region of the β-glucuronldase (GUS) reporter gene. Two promoter-GUS constructs with a 1.0- and 2.5-kb promoter fragment, respectively, were generated and transformed into the Japonica rice cultIvars TP309 and Zhonghua 11. Expression of GUS was Induced in the transgenic lines by cold, drought, dark, and JA. However, light, SA, and BTH treatments suppressed GUS expression. These results demonstrate that BWMK1 Is responsive to multiple ablotlc stresses and plant hormones and may play a role In cross-talk between different signaling pathways.展开更多
