Bird’s-eye view of recycled solid wastes in road engineering

Recent trends in road engineering have explored the potential of incorporating recycled solid wastes into infrastructures that including pavements,bridges,tunnels,and accessory structures.The utilization of solid wastes is expected to offer sustainable solutions to waste recycling while enhancing the performance of roads.This review provides an extensive analysis of the recycling of three main types of solid wastes for road engineering purposes:industrial solid waste,infrastructure solid waste,and municipal life solid waste.Industrial solid wastes suitable for road engineering generally include coal gangue,fly ash,blast furnace slag,silica fume,and steel slag,etc.Infrastructure solid wastes recycled in road engineering primarily consist of construction&demolition waste,reclaimed asphalt pavements,and recycled cement concrete.Furthermore,recent exploration has extended to the utilization of municipal life solid wastes,such as incinerated bottom ash,glass waste,electronics waste,plastic waste,and rubber waste in road engineering applications.These recycled solid wastes are categorized into solid waste aggregates,solid waste cements,and solid waste fillers,each playing distinct roles in road infrastructure.Roles of solid waste acting aggregates,cements,and fillers in road infrastructures were fully investigated,including their pozzolanic properties,integration effects to virgin materials,modification or enhancement solutions,engineering performances.Utilization of these materials not only addresses the challenge of waste management but also offers environmental benefits aiming carbon neutral and contributes to sustainable infrastructure development.However,challenges such as variability in material properties,environmental impact mitigation,secondary pollution to environment by leaching,and concerns regarding long-term performance need to be further addressed.Despite these challenges,the recycled solid wastes hold immense potential in revolutionizing road construction practices and fostering environmental stewardship.This review delves into a bird’seye view of the utilization of recycled solid wastes in road engineering,highlighting advances,benefits,challenges,and future prospects. 展开更多

Road material constitutive model is the essential condition of pavement structure design,calculation,and maintenance decision.Experts have conducted in-depth studies on the problems and proposed many meaningful constitutive models.However,these constitutive models have not been summarized and no uniform conclusion on the applicability of them is reported in the academic circle.The linear elastic model based on Hooke's law is still used in pavement structure design.This paper systematically reviewed the existing constitutive models that reflect the materials'mechanical properties and used for pavement structure calculation.These constitutive models were divided into three categories:linear,nonlinear,and damage models under repeated loads.The applicable conditions,parameter determination methods,advantages,and disadvantages of each model were introduced.Moreover,the model's feasibility in structural design and calculation was analyzed.Follow-up studies should focus on the parameter determination standard of viscoelastic constitutive models,the extension of the 1D constitutive model to 3D state,and the nonlinear constitutive models related to stress-strain state to drive the application of the constitutive models in pavement structure calculation and design.Furthermore,to evaluate the life cycle service performance of road materials and structures,establishing the pavement damage model from the structure perspective will be the future direction. 展开更多

The base layer constructed by cement-stabilized macadam(CSM)has been widely used in highway construction due to its low elasticity deformation and high carrying capacity.As a bearing layer,the CSM base is not exempt from fatigue cracking under cyclic loading in the service process.Cracks in the base will create irreversible structural and functional deficiencies,such as the potential for reflective cracking of subsequently placed asphalt concrete overlays.The fracture of the base will shorten the service life of the pavement.The quality of the CSM base is directly related to the bearing capacity and integrity of the whole pavement structure.It is of practical significance to further study the fatigue failure behavior of CSM material for the long-term performance of the pavement.The CSM material is a typical heterogeneous multiphase composite.On the mesoscale,CSM consists of aggregate,cement mortar,pores,and the interface transitional zone(ITZ).On the microscale,the hardened mortar contains a large number of capillary pores,unhydrated particles,hydrated crystals,etc.,which makes the spatial distribution of its material properties stochastic.In addition,cement hydration,dry shrinkage,and temperature shrinkage can also produce micro-crack defects in cement mortar.These microcracks will have crossscale evolution under load,resulting in structural fracture.Macroscopic complex deformation and mechanical response are the reflections of its microscopic and even mesoscale composition and structure.This study summarized the existing studies on the mesoscopic properties of CSM materials,respectively from the three aspects of mesostructure,structural characterization,and mesoscale fatigue damage analysis,to help the development of long-life pavement.The future research direction is to explore the mesoscale characteristics of CSM using multiscale representation and analysis methods,to establish the connection between mesoscale characteristics and macroscopic mechanical properties. 展开更多

Asphalt-rubber pavements often become dam-aged in high-temperature regions and appear rutted or wavy, and experience slippage. To improve the high-temperature performance of the asphalt-rubber mixture, technical measurements, such as, the optimal adjustment of gradation, technique of composite modification, and control of compaction were investigated. An optimal adjustment of aggregate gradation based on stone matrix asphalt improves the high-temperature stability of the asphaltrubber mixture significantly. Through composite modifi- cation, the effect of asphalt-rubber modification was enhanced, and the dynamic stability and relative defor- mation indices of the asphalt-rubber mixture were improved significantly. Furthermore, compaction parame- ters had a significant influence on the high-temperature stability of the asphalt-rubber mixture. The rolling times for compacting the asphalt-rubber mixture should be controlled to within 18-20 round-trips at a molding temperature at 180℃; if the rolling time is a 12 round-trip, the compaction temperature of the asphalt-rubber mixture should be controlled between 180 and 190℃. 展开更多

By indirect tensile strength (ITS) test and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, the influence of various material related parameters, including asphalt foamability, aggregate temperature, mixing moisture content (MMC) and foamed asphalt (FA) content, on the mechanical properties of FA mixes was studied. The results indicated that both asphalt foamability and aggregate temperature greatly affected ITS of FA mixes. Too low aggregate temperature was unfavorable for mechanical properties of FA mixes. Foamed index alone was unfit for the evaluation of asphalt foamability. Compared with half-life, expansion ratio had more prominent influence on ITS of FA mixes. MMC had significant impact on the mechanical properties of FA mixes and should be optimized by trial and test in FA mix design. The mechanical properties of FA mix were sensitive to the change of FA content. Compared with the ITS determined with standard Marshall specimens, both the ITS and UCS determined with static compressed specimens by 15 cm diameter were more effective in terms of choosing the optimal asphalt content for FA mixes. 展开更多

Evaluation of high temperature performance of SBS-modified asphalt mixture was presented.Both wheel loaded method and creep method were adopted for two different mixtures and two kinds of specimens with different height,and corresponding indicators were measured.Meanwhile,the correlation between these indicators was thoroughly analyzed and two kinds of mixtures were compared.The experimental results show that there is a good linear relationship between LWT indicators and CT indicators for M-13,while a relatively poor relationship for M-25,especially that between dynamic stiffness and static stiffness and that between dynamic stability and static creep stiffness.Besides,logarithmic relationship between DS and RD has a higher determination coefficient than that for linear relationship.Thus,multi-index evaluation should be taken for synthetically assessing high temperature performance of asphalt mixture. 展开更多

The major contemporary in road pavement engineering is related to the creation of green and sustainable infrastructures,e.g.,reduction of environmental impacts,increase in traffic safety,and transportation efficiency,etc.This review presents the recent trends in research and the technical solutions developed so far to address these challenges.After the analysis of research status in the past decades,a novel technology system of eco-friendly pavements is proposed considering two solutions,materials modification and structure improvement.The construction of an eco-friendly pavement can be achieved thanks to several different technologies ensuring permeable,noise-reducing,self-luminous,and exhaust-decomposing properties as well as apporting lower heat absorbing and enhanced anti-/de-icing characteristics.A systematic review of these technologies is presented pivoting on four main aspects:technical principle,material and structural composition,performance evaluation,and engineering application.The current trend in road engineering is combining the pavement infrastructure with various eco-friendly functions,e.g.,water permeability,noise reduction,low heat absorption,exhaust gas decomposition,and anti-/de-icing.Finally,the review lists the drawbacks of the existing technologies,including high cost,single function,etc.,and depicts the future developing direction and architecture of the next generation of eco-friendly pavements in which the road infrastructure should have more environmentally friendly functions than the existing technology. 展开更多

Reclaimed asphalt pavement(RAP)has significant recycling value because it contains nonrenewable resources including asphalt and aggregate.However,thus far,only a small part of RAP materials can be used in the con-struction of recycled asphalt pavement,and the usage is regarded as a low-value utilization in the underlying layers.One of the most important reasons for this shortcoming is the problem of false particle size and pseudo gradation of RAP materials.Therefore,identifying suitable asphalt-aggregate separation technology is essential for improving the utilization of RAP materials in recycled asphalt mixture and enhancing the construction quality of recycled asphalt pavement.To address this,the paper performed a systematic review of asphalt-aggregate separation technologies for processing RAP materials and their prospects.Firstly,based on the composition of the asphalt mixture and the characteristics of RAP materials after aging,the key RAP separation technologies were proposed.Then,the concept,principle,and implementation methods of physical,chemical,and biological sep-aration methods of RAP materials were comprehensively analyzed.Moreover,the advantages and disadvantages of various separation technologies were discussed by comparing them with the related technologies in the petrochemical industry.The application prospects of various asphalt-aggregate separation methods for RAP materials can provide a reference for upgrading and expanding solid waste recycling technology for asphalt pavement. 展开更多

Asphalt binder is inevitably aged by ultraviolet(UV)light during its service period.UV ageing can significantly decrease the technical properties of asphalt binder.The sensitivity of asphalt to UV ageing and thermal-oxidative ageing differs,such that the UV ageing performance cannot be determined based on the thermal-oxidative ageing performance.Previous researches mainly focused on the chemical composite and technical performance changes of asphalt binder during UV ageing,and the UV light parameters effect on the ageing rate of asphalt binder.However,the theory for characterizing and explaining the development of UV ageing depth does not get too much attentions,and the UV ageing mechanism of asphalt binder is not very clear.Therefore,it cannot guide to develop or select the good methods or anti-UV ageing additives for asphalt binders.This paper focuses on the latest researches of the mechanisms and anti-ageing methods of asphalt binders.With the increase of UV ageing time,the UV ageing of asphalt binder develops gradually from the surface to inner part.There are various methods,such as low-penetration grade asphalt,less air void ratio,UV stabilizers and UV light absorbers,that can improve the UV ageing resistance of asphalt binders.A new theory of sensitive wavelengths of asphalt UV ageing is proposed,which can enrich the basic theory of asphalt UV ageing.Depending on this theory,different wavelengths of UV light have different ageing effects on asphalt binder.The composite anti-UV ageing additives with barrier and specific absorption effects on UV light is proposed,and may have better improvement effect on the anti-UV ageing performance of asphalt binder. 展开更多

The vibratory roller is a piece of vital construction machinery in the field of road construction.The unmanned vibratory roller efficiently utilizes the automated driving technology in the vehicle engineering field,which is innovative for the unmanned road construction.This paper develops and implements the autonomous construction system for the unmanned vibratory roller.Not only does the roller have the function of remote-controlled driving,but it also has the capability of autonomous road construction.The overall system design uses the Programmable Logic Controller(PLC)as the kernel controller.It establishes the communication network through multiple Input/Output(I/O)modules,Recommended Standard 232(RS232)serial port,Controller Area Network(CAN)bus,and wireless networks to control the roller vehicle completely.The locating information is obtained through the Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS)satellite navigation equipment group to support the process of autonomous construction.According to the experimental results,the autonomous construction system can finally enable the roller to perform driving operations and construction independently,which was a significant step forward in engineering application. 展开更多

The rising number of vehicles on roadways expedites the urge to increase efforts in implementing monitoring systems that look after road pavement conditions. This rising in number of vehicles on roadways also cause more damages and distresses on road pavement. Road pavement conditions should be accurately evaluated to identify the severity of pavement damages and types of pavement distress. Therefore, monitoring systems are considered a significant step of maintenance processes. Paved roads and unpaved roads require regular maintenance to provide for and preserve users' usability, accessibility, and safety. Transport agents and researches would spend a lot of time and money in inspecting some sections of the roadway surface;that inspection would then be followed by results recording and data analysis to diagnose the type of treatment required. These monitoring systems have been developed using various methods that include smart technologies and prepared equipment. Many related studies evaluate road pavement degradation and distress, while others focus on identifying the best maintenance monitoring approach in terms of time and cost. This paper set out to explore different monitoring techniques used to evaluate road pavement surface condition. Also, this study introduces dynamic and static monitoring systems used in both paved and unpaved roads to identify the severity of pavement degradations and types of pavement distress on road surfaces and also this study explains the used equipment in the previous monitoring studies. 展开更多

Prefabricated pavement is increasingly applied worldwide due to the rapid construction on-site.This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the precast systems and assembly connection of concrete slabs,as well as the precast pavement features.The previous research indicates that:(1)both super-slab and Michigan systems are recommended with the satisfied road performance close to the cast-in-place;(2)flexible base material is suggested for the fabricated pavement for the satisfied leveling and stress distribution;(3)to prevent the voiding phenomenon of the fabricated pavement,the sand cushion course,dry mixed mortar or self-leveling mortar,and other flowable materials could be used for the secondary leveling of the base after the pavement splicing;(4)two-direction dowel bars are recommended for slab connections of the fabricated pavement,which helps to improve the load transfer capacity of the joints and enhance the durability of the fabricated pavement structure;(5)the sealing treatment of precast slab joints needs strengthening to reduce the impact of surface runoff on the base course;(6)the further research focuses are designing with functional,composite,mechanized,intelligent,lightweight,and flexible pavement slabs.Besides,pavement mechanical properties induced by temperature overlapping traffic loads need to be revealed. 展开更多
