As the population continues to shrink in the black soil region of Northeast China since 2000,it is critical to master the impact of population shrinkage on rural functions to realize rural revitalization and sustainable development. In this study,we focused on the impacts of depopulation on the evolution and interrelationship of rural subfunctions.Based on the rural function indexes system, the TOPSIS(Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution)method, spatial analysis method, and mathematical statistics analysis method were used to summarize the spatial and temporal characteristics of rural function development,as well as the effect of population shrinkage in the typical black soil region of Northeast China. The results showed that depopulation varied in the extent and duration between the forested region and plain areas, which both impacted the trajectories of rural subfunctions evolution. For the economic development function and ecological conservation function, the effect of continuous slight depopulation was beneficial, while the effect of rapid depopulation was adverse, which was exactly opposite to the agricultural production function. All forms of population shrinkage were conducive to the development of the social security function. With the deepening population shrinkage, depopulation mainly promoted the collaborative development between subfunctions in this study, except the relationship between agricultural production and social security function. But effects of depopulation on the interrelationship of rural subfunctions varied between the forested region and plain areas in some cases. The results provided evidence for the cognition that population shrinkage had complicated effects on rural subfunctions. 展开更多

Rural territorial function follows the trend to develop from agricultural production space to a complex of cultural heritage, food security, social stability, quality of living, etc.Based on the rural area's territorial function to both urban and rural areas and its evolution law, index system of rural development evaluation, covering rural production function, rural consumption function, regional sustaining function, and individual development function were constructed in this paper.Case study based on Shandong Province and entropy method showed that the rural development in Shandong Province was neither stable nor orderly, and some of rural territorial functions were under fluctuation. The simulation result was close to the actual situation in rural areas of Shandong Province, and therefore,it would provide some experience for scientific evaluation of rural development in other regions. In the end, policy suggestion to cope with rural function transition was provided, namely further promoting the rural economic development, and breaking away from various factors that restricted the value realization, natural increment, and equitable distribution of rural production factors, and therefore,it would receive a sustainable rural development. 展开更多

The coordinated development of urban and rural territorial systems has long been a scientific issue of concern in geography and socioeconomic development in China.Based on Territorial Function Theory, this paper establishes a theoretical framework to support the coordinated development of urban and rural territorial systems, analyzes the trend of functional evolution, discusses the impact of efficient allocation and orderly element flow on system equivalence development, and puts forward approaches and policy suggestions for equilibrium development in the future. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The evolution of urban and rural territorial functions has experienced four stages:rural to rural, rural to urban transition, rural to urban, and urban to urban. In this process, territorial functions have been developed to be hierarchical and advanced.(2)Functional evolution enables urban and rural comparative advantages to be transformed from value difference to value equivalence.Increasing the flow intensity and reconstructing the flow space have become the necessary conditions for the coordination of development.(3)Land is the most important resource in China, and land system reform is the key to achieving equivalence development of urban and rural territorial systems, thereby determining the future equilibrium development of the two systems. 展开更多

Safety performance functions(SPFs) are crucial to science-based road safety management.Success in developing and applying SPFs, apart data quality and availability, depends fundamentally on two key factors: the validity of the statistical inferences for the available data and on how well the data can be organized into distinct homogeneous entities. The latter aspect plays a key role in the identification and treatment of road sections or corridors with problems related to safety. Indeed, the segmentation of a road network could be especially critical in the development of SPFs that could be used in safety management for roadway types, such as motorways(freeways in North America), which have a large number of variables that could result in very short segments if these are desired to be homogeneous. This consequence, from an analytical point of view, can be a problem when the location of crashes is not precise and when there is an overabundance of segments with zero crashes. Lengthening the segments for developing and applying SPFs can mitigate this problem, but at a sacrifice of homogeneity. This paper seeks to address this dilemma by investigating four approaches for segmentation for motorways, using sample data from Italy. The best results were obtained for the segmentation based on two curves and two tangents within a segment and with fixed length segments. The segmentation characterized by a constant value of all original variables inside each segment was the poorest approach by all measures. 展开更多
