The symbols in Hawthorne's masterpiece The Scarlet Letter have the characteristics of indefmiteness and multi-sense, the most typical being the scarlet letter "A" and the forest. The reference of the scarlet letter "A" changes from "Adulteress" to "Able" then to "Angel." And the forest stands for individual freedom, danger and evil as well. The indefiniteness and multi-sense reflect the author's contradictions in mind: on one hand, he is in opposition to Puritanism's depression of humanity, but conforms to the moral principles of Puritanism on the other. 展开更多

Hawthorne, as a writer, took part in this experiment. In his The Scarlet Letter, he justifies what seems unjustifiable: that is Hester’s transgression of both religious and social laws. By Hester’s “social experiment,” Hawthorne advocates the Enlightenment idea that natural law takes precedence over God’s law; as well as the humanistic idea that human being is more important than social conventions. In Hester’s destiny, Hawthorne expressed his hope that the newborn nation should develop on a more healthy and natural way. 展开更多

After being , the book brought a variety of dispute. Although many great critics had their authoritative comments on the work, the author of this paper focused on the psycho-logical description in The Scarlet Letter. This paper focus on the analysis of the psychological description of the characters in The Scarlet Letter. This paper is divided into two parts-- The first part is " Personality of the main characters", which depicts the different personality of the characters. The second part is" Wonderful Psychological Description ". The psychology description of characters connected with the portrayal of scenes, the development of plot and the foil of nature surroundings to explore the secret in characters'complicated and contradictory interior world. This kind of psychological description didn't only makes the disposition of the characters distinctive but also works a lot in the development of plot and intensification of the theme. Although Hawthorne took good use of psychological description, he had one shortcoming--to make characters seem negative when the author made psychological depiction lifelikely, which, to some extent, destroyed the brilliant images of characters and weaken the ideoligical meanings. Generally speaking, it is a good literature work for people to study old literature and create today's literature. 展开更多

The Scarlet Letter makes the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne known all around the world. There are many aspects worth our consideration in The Scarlet Letter, but one about human nature and moral problems is especially deserving of our discussion. This paper mainly reveals the beauty and ugliness of human nature by analyzing the honesty and hypocrisy of the three leading characters in The Scarlet Letter. Hester Prynne is an honest woman, who bravely admits her love to the young minister Dimmesdale and never cheats her husband Chillingworth. Whereas, honesty and hypocrisy have no clear borderline on Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. Because of atonement, the timid, hypocritical minister surpasses himself and returns to honesty at last, but the once-honest scholar changes himself into Satan due to revenge. The paper mainly tells people that the best policy for man is to be true, honest, and ever ready to show one's worst to the outside world. 展开更多
