In response to the increasing level of unemployment and the recent global trend of shifting individual economy prosperity from jobs to entrepreneurship and in the quest for fulfillment of the national goals of providing effective and self-reliant citizens,the revised National Policy on Education introduced 34 new entrepreneur/vocational subjects from which every student is mandated to pick one subject with the hope that she/he may practically apply as sustainable trade for self-reliance and possible personal economic prosperity.The educational administrators and managers at school level are further mandated to ensure a successful implementation of the curriculum.This study evaluates the curriculum 2007 using a census survey approach.Specifically,the most offered trade/entrepreneurship subjects were identified using a validated researcher made inventory and the questions of whether the subjects are relevant to the students’aspirations,the level of practical application of the trade learnt,and the level of quality of teachers handing the vocational subjects were examined through the administration of the instrument to 4,900 senior secondary school graduates,1,400 teachers,and 350 principals and directors in North-Western Nigeria.The study found four most prevalent subjects offered to be animal husbandry and fisheries,and it was also found that 71%of the teachers teaching the vocational subjects are not qualified to teach the subjects and the 71%of the students are not willing to practice the vocation learnt as trade.Among other things,complete revisiting of the curriculum 2007 was recommended where the subjects will be reduced from 34 to 10 through merger of many related subjects,and subjects like fisheries and animal husbandry should be merged with agriculture and the subject made compulsory. 展开更多

Background:Physical education(PE)is a key channel that impacts children's decisions and behaviors for healthful living.This study evaluated the effects of a concept-based PE(CBPE)instructional unit,featured by energy balance(EB)education,on students'knowledge learning,situational interest,cognitive,and physical engagements as well as teachers'perceptions.Methods:Fourth and 5th grade students(n=468)in a mid-western state of the United States were recruited as the participants.Four elementary schools were randomized to the CBPE or control groups.Students'EB knowledge,situational interest,cognitive engagement,and physical engagement were measured by a knowledge test,the Situational Interest Scale—Elementary,written task sheets,and accelerometers,respectively,while teachers'perceptions of the CBPE unit were captured by individual interviews at the end of the experiment.Results:The CBPE group showed a significant increase in EB knowledge,while the control did not.Both groups showed a similar increasing trend for situational interest over time,although the statistical results favored the control group.For physical engagement,the CBPE group demonstrated a statistically different but substantively similar level of in-class physical activity compared to the control group.The CBPE group also showed a moderate level of cognitive engagement throughout the unit.The PE teachers reported overall positive perceptions about teaching the CBPE unit.Conclusion:These results support the utility of the CBPE unit in enhancing EB education along with facilitating positive student interest and engagement as well as positive teaching experiences. 展开更多

Our study aims to take a closer look at China's current information literacy(IL) program standards at secondary schools and to analyze their level of success and/or failures in a comparative way with those of the ... Our study aims to take a closer look at China's current information literacy(IL) program standards at secondary schools and to analyze their level of success and/or failures in a comparative way with those of the United States in terms of fulfilling their each other's mission-oriented mandates. Our research findings show that China's current IL standards of high schools contain a disproportionate emphasis on information technology(IT). Moreover, the stipulations of these IL standards are narrowly construed and without being solidly grounded on a broad and comprehensive educational perspective. We also suggest that there are two underlying causes for this set of unsound IL standards in China.Firstly, there is a lack of collaboration between two major competing forces engaged in the curricular development and research of IL in China: Those professionals in educational IT discipline vis-à-vis those in Library and Information Science. Secondly, library professionals have a very limited influence on major socio-cultural policies, even at their own institutions. As a result, this paper recommends the following three possible measures,which may help remedy this situation strategically: 1) Establishing a set of new IL curriculum standards based on an IL-centered educational perspective; 2) establishing a teacher-librarian's training program to promote school librarians' role in IL education; and 3) strengthening the research and development of an online IL education program and an accompanied evaluation mechanism. 展开更多
