The target reliability indices of the foundation structures of sea-crossing bridges on the serviceability limit state (SLS) are different from those of common bridges due to their different surroundings. Consequently, three levels of the target reliability indices, which are 1.5, 2. 0 and 2. 3, respectively, for those structures on the SLS are suggested based on the Joint Committee on Structural Safety (JCSS) model code, and a new method of calibrating factors of live loads, which is based on the contribution ratio of tensile stresses of reinforcing bars produced by various loads to the maximum crack width of concrete, is proposed. Finally, the calibration of the reliability-based factors of the frequent value and the quasi-permanent value of live loads is conducted by the Joint Committee (JC) method through an actual design, and the indices are proved to be reasonable and the new method is proved to be feasible. 展开更多

With the continuous development of bridge and tunnel construction technologies,large-scale sea-crossing bridges and tunnels have gradually become the preferred choice for regional traffic. The construction technology of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(HZMB),one of the most representative sea-crossing passageways,is instructive for the construction of other large sea-crossing infrastructures. At present, the pavement design method of sea-crossing passageways lacks pertinence as it still refers to specifications for design of common pavement. Therefore,it is necessary to consider the bridge and tunnel pavement of HZMB as a typical example to analyze key technical problems encountered in its design, construction and operation.Novel solutions for material selection and structural design built upon the analysis of such critical problems should thus follow up.Based on comprehensive literature research,it can be found that environmental variability, tunnel closure, structural differential settlement and expansion deformation are the key technical problems faced by pavement of sea-crossing passageways. In view of the environmental variability, the steel deck-paving material and structure design of GMA-10 t SMA-13 is innovatively proposed. As for the closure of immersed tube tunnel,warm-mix flame retardant asphalt mixture is used to control pavement design through key indexes such as temperature and limit oxygen index.Regarding the deformation of immersed pipe joints,BJ200 asphalt seamless expansion joint material is introduced, which effectively satisfies the multi-directional deformation between pipe joints and ensures the smoothness of the road surface and driving comfort. For segmental joints,double-layer waterproof-coiled material is used to effectively prevent reflective cracks while ensuring the continuity of asphalt concrete pavement. Therefore, this paper provides a panel of ideas and methods for the pavement design of the same type of sea-crossing passageways. 展开更多

To improve the accuracy of thermal response estimation and overcome the limitations of the linear regression model and Artificial Neural Network(ANN)model, this study introduces a deep learning estimation method specifically based on the Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)network,to predict temperature-induced girder end displacements of the Dasha Waterway Bridge,a suspension bridge in China.First,to enhance data quality and select target sensors, preprocessing based on the sigma rule and nearest neighbor interpolation is applied to the raw data.Furthermore,to eliminate the high-frequency components from the displacement signal, the wavelet transform is conducted.Subsequently, the linear regression model and ANN model are established, whose results do not meet the requirements and fail to address the time lag effect between temperature and displacements. The study proceeds to develop the LSTM network model and determine the optimal parameters through hyperparameter sensitivity analysis. Finally, the results of the LSTM network model are discussed by a comparative analysis against the linear regression model and ANN model, which indicates a higher accuracy in predicting temperatureinduced girder end displacements and the ability to mitigate the time-lag effect. To be more specific,in comparison between the linear regression model and LSTM network, the mean square error decreases from 6.5937 to 1.6808 and R2 increases from 0.683 to 0.930,which corresponds to a 74.51%decrease in MSE and a 36.14%improvement in R2.Compared to ANN,with an MSE of 4.6371 and an R2 of 0.807,LSTM shows a decrease in MSE of 63.75%and an increase in R2 of 13.23%,demonstrating a significant enhancement in predictive performance. 展开更多

As an evaluation index, the natural frequency has the advantages of easy acquisition and quantitative evaluation. In this paper, the natural frequency is used to evaluate the performance of external cable reinforced bridges.Numerical examples show that compared with the natural frequencies of first-order modes, the natural frequencies of higher-order modes are more sensitive and can reflect the damage situation and external cable reinforcement effect of T-beam bridges. For damaged bridges,as the damage to the T-beam increases, the natural frequency value of the bridge gradually decreases. When the degree of local damage to the beam reaches 60%,the amplitude of natural frequency change exceeds 10%for the first time. The natural frequencies of the firstorder vibration mode and higher-order vibration mode can be selected as indexes for different degrees of the damaged T-beam bridges. For damaged bridges reinforced with external cables, the traditional natural frequency of the first-order vibration mode cannot be used as the index, which is insensitive to changes in prestress of the external cable. Some natural frequencies of higher-order vibration modes can be selected as indexes, which can reflect the reinforcement effect of externally prestressed damaged T-beam bridges, and its numerical value increases with the increase of external prestressed cable force. 展开更多

Foundation scour is an important cause for structural failure of sea-crossing bridges. Usually, the sea-crossing bridges operate under the harsh natural environment in which service wind, wave and vehicle loads are stronger and extreme loads such as earthquake, hurricane, and ship collision, are more frequent. As a result of the foundation scour, the dynamic behavior of bridge under different combined action of service and extreme loads may be further escalated. In particular, this work has investigated the scour effect on a sea-crossing bridge under service wind, wave and vehicle loads as well as extreme seismic loads. The dynamic coupled earthquake-wind-wave-vehicle-bridge(EWWVB) system is established by considering the interactions within the system, and the p-y curve method is used to calculate the loaddisplacement relation of the pile and soil under various levels of foundation scour. After that, a case study has been performed on a cable-stayed bridge with foundation scour. The results indicate that the dynamic characteristics of bridge structure will change after considering bridge scour, and the dynamic responses of bridge and vehicle will be affected to different degrees under service and seismic loads considering bridge scour. 展开更多

The deformation monitoring of long-span railway bridges is significant to ensure the safety of human life and property. The interferometric synthetic aperture radar(In SAR)technology has the advantage of high accuracy in bridge deformation monitoring. This study monitored the deformation of the Ganjiang Super Bridge based on the small baseline subsets(SBAS)In SAR technology and Sentinel-1A data.We analyzed the deformation results combined with bridge structure, temperature, and riverbed sediment scouring. The results are as follows:(1)The Ganjiang Super Bridge area is stable overall, with deformation rates ranging from-15.6 mm/yr to 10.7 mm/yr(2)The settlement of the Ganjiang Super Bridge deck gradually increases from the bridge tower toward the main span, which conforms to the typical deformation pattern of a cable-stayed bridge.(3)The sediment scouring from the riverbed cause the serious settlement on the bridge’s east side compared with that on the west side.(4)The bridge deformation negatively correlates with temperature, with a faster settlement at a higher temperature and a slow rebound trend at a lower temperature. The study findings can provide scientific data support for the health monitoring of long-span railway bridges. 展开更多

To study on the numerical simulation calculation reliability of sea-crossing bridge under complex wave forces, the paper applied GPS deformation monitoring and numerical simulation calculation by researching Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Sea-Crossing Bridge. The db3 wavelet three-layer decomposition was used on the horizontal movement of the sea-crossing bridge and the wind speed of the waves to analyze their correlation. The complex wave forces value of Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Sea-Crossing Bridge was loaded on FLAC3D software successfully to make numerical simulation calculation of bridge deformation.Since the accuracy of the GPS deformation monitoring reaches millimeter level,it was used to monitor the exact value of the bridge deformation to judge the reliability of numerical simulation. The relative errors of displacement in X,Y and Z directions were between 33%and 41%through comparison. It could be seen that the numerical simulation error was relatively large, which was mainly due to various environmental factors and the deviation of applied wave forces. However, numerical simulation generally reflects the deformation law of the sea-crossing bridge under complex wave forces, providing an effectively technical support for the safe operation assessment of the sea-crossing bridge. 展开更多

A novel approach for analyzing coupled vibrations between vehicles and bridges is presented, taking into account spatiotemporal effects and mechanical phenomena resulting fromvehicle braking.Efficient modeling and solution of bridge vibrations induced by vehicle deceleration are realized using this method. The method’s validity and reliability are substantiated through numerical examples.A simply supported beam bridge with a corrugated steel web is taken as an example and the effects of parameters such as the initial vehicle speed, braking acceleration, braking location, and road surface roughness on the mid-span displacement and impact factor of the bridge are analyzed. The results show that vehicle braking significantly amplifies mid-span displacement and impact factor responses in comparison to uniform vehicular motion across the bridge.Notably, the influence of wheelto-bridge friction forces is of particular significance and cannot be overlooked. When the vehicle initiates braking near the middle of the span, both the mid-span displacement and impact factor of the bridge exhibit substantial increases, further escalating with higher braking acceleration.Under favorable road surface conditions, the midspan displacement and the impact factor during vehicle braking may exceed the design values stipulated by codes. It is important to note that road surface roughness exerts a more pronounced effect on the impact factor of the bridge in comparison to the effects of vehicle braking. 展开更多

Sudden earthquakes pose a threat to the running safety of trains on high-speed railway bridges, and the stiffness of piers is one of the factors affecting the dynamic response of train-track-bridge system. In this paper,a experiment of a train running on a high-speed railway bridge is performed based on a dynamic experiment system, and the corresponding numerical model is established. The reliability of the numerical model is verified by experiments. Then, the experiment and numerical data are analyzed to reveal the pier height effects on the running safety of trains on bridges. The results show that when the pier height changes, the frequency of the bridge below the 30 m pier height changes greater;the increase of pier height causes the transverse fundamental frequency of the bridge close to that of the train, and the shaking angle and lateral displacement of the train are the largest for bridge with 50 m pier, which increases the risk of derailment;with the pier height increases from 8 m to 50 m,the derailment coefficient obtained by numerical simulations increases by 75% on average, and the spectral intensity obtained by experiments increases by 120% on average, two indicators exhibit logarithmic variation. 展开更多

Seismic fragility analysis of three-tower cable-stayed bridges with three different structural systems, including rigid system(RS),floating system(FS),and passive energy dissipation system(PEDS),is conducted to study the effects of connection configurations on seismic responses and fragilities.Finite element models of bridges are established using OpenSees.A new ground motion screening method based on the statistical characteristic of the predominant period is proposed to avoid irregular behavior in the selection process of ground motions, and incremental dynamic analysis(IDA)is performed to develop components and systems fragility curves. The effects of damper failure on calculated results for PEDS are examined in terms of seismic response and fragility analysis. The results show that the bridge tower is the most affected component by different structural systems. For RS,the fragility of the middle tower is significantly higher than other components, and the bridge failure starts from the middle tower, exhibiting a characteristic of local failure. For FS and PEDS,the fragility of the edge tower is higher than the middle tower. The system fragility of RS is higher than FS and PEDS.Taking the failure of dampers into account is necessary to obtain reliable seismic capacity of cable-stayed bridges. 展开更多

The issue of low-frequency structural noise radiated from high-speed railway(HSR) box-girder bridges(BGBs) is a significant challenge worldwide. Although it is known that vibrations in BGBs caused by moving trains can be reduced by installing multiple tuned mass dampers(MTMDs) on the top plate, there is limited research on the noise reduction achieved by this method. This study aims to investigate the noise reduction mechanism of BGBs installed with MTMDs on the top plate. A sound radiation prediction model for the BGB installed with MTMDs is developed, based on the vehicle–track–bridge coupled dynamics and acoustics boundary element method. After being verified by field tested results, the prediction model is employed to study the reduction of vibration and noise of BGBs caused by the MTMDs. It is found that installing MTMDs on top plate can significantly affect the vibration distribution and sound radiation law of BGBs. However, its impact on the sound radiation caused by vibrations dominated by the global modes of BGBs is minimal. The noise reduction achieved by MTMDs is mainly through changing the acoustic radiation contributions of each plate of the bridge. In the lower frequency range, the noise reduction of BGB caused by MTMDs can be more effective if the installation of MTMDs can modify the vibration frequency and distribution of the BGB to avoid the influence of small vibrations and disperse the sound radiation from each plate. 展开更多

High-speed railway bridges are subjected to normative limitations concerning maximum permissible deck accelerations. For the design of these structures, the European norm EN 1991-2 introduces the high-speed load model(HSLM)—a set of point loads intended to include the effects of existing high-speed trains.Yet,the evolution of current trains and the recent development of new load models motivate a discussion regarding the limits of validity of the HSLM.For this study,a large number of randomly generated load models of articulated, conventional, and regular trains are tested and compared with the envelope of HSLM effects. For each type of train, two sets of 100,000 load models are considered:one abiding by the limits of the EN 1991-2 and another considering wider limits. This comparison is achieved using both a bridge-independent metric(train signatures)and dynamic analyses on a case study bridge(the Canelas bridge of the Portuguese Railway Network). For the latter,a methodology to decrease the computational cost of moving loads analysis is introduced. Results show that some theoretical load models constructed within the stipulated limits of the norm can lead to effects not covered by the HSLM.This is especially noted in conventional trains, where there is a relation with larger distances between centres of adjacent vehicle bogies. 展开更多

This paper investigates the impact of differential foundation settlement on the reliability of bridge superstructure based on loads and resistances statistical properties in Missouri State.Maximum deterministic differential settlement is often used in current AASHTO LRFD(load and resistance factored design)specification. However, the expected foundation settlement is quite different from the actual settlement due to the soil’s large variability. Therefore,it makes sense to consider settlement as a random variable. In this paper,a lognormal distribution with coefficient of variation of 0.25 of random settlement is considered in reliability analysis based on limited previous studies.Dead and live loads are modeled as random variables with normal and Gumbel Type I distributions, respectively.Considering the regional traffic condition on Missouri roadways, the live load effect on existing bridges based on weight-in-motion data is also investigated. The calibrated resistance statistical properties such as bias and COV(coefficient of variance)are used for reliability analysis.Total 14 existing bridges based on Strength I Limit State are analyzed.Since no differential settlement is considered in the past designed bridges in Missouri, small differential settlement can significantly reduce the reliability indices of the superstructure, depending upon the span length and rigidity of the girder. The analysis results also show that the reliability of existing steel-girder bridges is consistently higher than prestressed concrete and solid slab bridges;the shorter and stiffer the spans, the more significant the settlement’s effect on the reliability of bridge superstructures; As the span length ratio becomes less than 0.75,the girder and solid slab bridges’reliability drops significantly at small settlements. 展开更多

Segmentally assembled bridges are increasinglyfinding engineering applications in recent years due to their unique advantages, especially as urban viaducts.Vehicle loads are one of the most important variable loads acting on bridge structures.Accordingly, the influence of overloaded vehicles on existing assembled bridge structures is an urgent concern at present. This paper establishes thefinite element model of the segmentally assembled bridge based on ABAQUS software and analyzes the influence of vehicle overload on an assembled girder bridge struc-ture.First,afinite element model corresponding to the target bridge is established based on ABAQUS software, and the load is controlled to simulate vehicle movement in each area of the traveling zone at different times.Sec-ond,the key cross-sections of segmental girder bridges are monitored in real time based on the force character-istics of continuous girder bridges, and they are compared with the simulation results. Finally,a material damage ontology model is introduced, and the structural damage caused by different overloading rates is compared and analyzed. Results show that thefinite element modeling method is accurate by comparing with on-site measured data, and it is suitable for the numerical simulation of segmental girder bridges;Dynamic sensors installed at 1/4L,1/2L,and 3/4L of the segmental girder main beams could be used to identify the dynamic response of segmental girder bridges; The bottom plate of the segmental girder bridge is mostly damaged at the position where the length of the precast beam section changes and the midspan position. With the increase in load, damage in the direction of the bridge develops faster than that in the direction of the transverse bridge.Thefindings of this study can guide maintenance departments in the management and maintenance of bridges and vehicles. 展开更多

A significant portion of the sum spent by asset managers in maintaining steel bridge assets is dedicated to corrosion management of aging steel bridges, particularly very old ones.Managing corrosion of such bridges poses unique challenges owing to the inherent complexities associated with design, material, fabrication and construction.Steel bridges have come a long way from being constructed of cast iron and wrought iron in the early days to modern day low carbon high strength steel bridges.During inception of steel bridges in Australia, wrought iron was used extensively in deck structure whereas piers were generally constructed of cast iron. Some of these piers have been found to be suffering from graphitisation.Even though CP(cathodic protection)has been proven to enhance the life of steel and reinforced concrete structures by preventing any further corrosion, there is little evidence to validate its success in preventing graphitisation of cast iron piers.Early steel bridges in NSW(New South Wales)were constructed with a complex geometry involving riveted cellular box girders, later simplified to riveted trusses. For any rehabilitation work to begin, the challenges start at the investigation stage.Due to cellular box type construction, thorough inspection and examination of inside of the boxes is generally not feasible even with the use of the available state-of-the-art investigation techniques. Some of the steel bridges in service in NSW are more than 120 years old.Any rehabilitation effort for such bridges faces challenges in terms of design methods to be used, availability of compatible material, selection of an appropriate method of joining e.g.welding or bolting, selection of a compatible protective coating, accessibility for the work to be carried out, etc. This paper describes common forms of corrosion observed on bridges. It demonstrates the difficulties in maintaining old bridges using two case studies. 展开更多

In order to realize the in-situ evaluation of reinforced concrete bridges subjected to fatigue for a long time or after earthquake, an evaluation method for cumulative damage of concrete structures based on unloading elastic modulus was proposed. First, according to the concrete stress-strain curve and the statistical relationship between residual strain and cumulative strain, the calculation method of static equivalent strain and residual strain concrete based on unloading elastic modulus and the method for estimating the strength of concrete after damage were proposed. The detailed steps of field test and analysis and the practical damage indicators of residual strain were given. Then, the evaluation method of existing stress and strain of Reinforced Concrete Bridge under dead load and the concept of “equivalent dead load bending moment” were put forward. On this basis, the paper analyzed the root cause of the decrease of bearing capacity of Reinforced Concrete Bridge after fatigue damage, and pointed out that the equivalent strain or residual strain of reinforced concrete increases under the fatigue effect, which led to the decreasing of actual live moment and deformation performance while the ultimate load-carrying capacity remained constant or very little decrease. The evaluation method of structure residual capacity was given, and through comparative analysis of eight T reinforced concrete beams that had been in service for 35 years with the static failure tests, the effectiveness of the method was verified. 展开更多
