To elucidate the influence of DBL on salt release from saline sediments to freshwater, two experiments with or without wind blowing were conducted. According to the experiments, a 3.5 cm DBL is formed above the smoothed sediments at a steady wind field and this thickness is greater than other studies. The observed flux of salt through the DBL is 6% larger than the calculated value from Fick' s first law. The results indicate that molecular diffusion is the dominant mechanism for salt transport through the DBL. The presence of DBL suppresses the hydrodynamic enhancement for matter exchange between sediments and overlying water. Therefore, salts in the sediments of a polder reservoir may influence the water quality chronically.展开更多

[Method] The effect of in situ sediments aeration on the release of nitrogen pollutants was investigated, and the nitrogen release kinetics parameters were analyzed. The process of nitrification and denitrification under sediments aeration condition was investigated in laboratory. [Result] The nitrogen released from sediments was enhanced by aeration disturbance. The concentration of NH4+-N and TN reached the maximum value in 30 min, and release rates were proportional to the disturbance strength. In this study, with the distance of aerator to the sediments surface of 0, 1, 2 and 3 cm, the suspended sediments concentrations were 3.52, 3.41, 3.26 and 3.01 g/L, respectively. Maximum release concentration of NH4+-N and TN were 14.3, 13.8, 13.2, 12.2 mg/L and 33.21, 30.98, 29.83, 27.30 mg/L, respec- tively. In addition, both NH4+-N and TN release kinetics could be described by Double Constant Equation as InC=A+Blnt. Nitrification reaction occurred and was promoted by continued aerating to sediments. The concentration of NH4+-N dropped down from 12.4 mg/L to 0.2 mg/L in 8 d, with the concentration of NO3--N increased to the maximum value of 10.8 mg/L. In addition, concentration of NO3--N and TN decreased from 10.8 mg/L and 37.4 mg/L to 0.36 mg/L and 23.2 mg/L after the stop of aeration for 12 d, indicating the occurrence of denitdfication reaction. Therefore, sediment aeration could accelerate nitrogen release and nitrification reaction, and with intermittent aeration, nitrogen could be removed from sediments in-situ by nitrification and denitrification. [Conclusion] The results provided technical reference for the in situ sediment remediation for the black-odor rivers in cities.展开更多

The results indicated that the contents of different P fractions in the sediments varied greatly. The total P (TP) contents ranged from 968 to 2017 mg/kg. Phosphorus contents in NH4Cl-P, BD-P, NaOH-P, and HCl-P ranged from 6.7 to 26.6 mg/kg, 54.5 to 90.2 mg/kg, 185.2 to 382.5 mg/kg, and 252.3 to 425.5 mg/kg, respectively, which represented 1.2%-3.2%, 7.7%-13%, 33.3%-48.9%, and 36.2%-54.2% of the sedimentary inorganic P, respectively. For all the sediment samples, the rank order of P-fractions was Res-P 〉 HCl-P 〉 NaOH-P 〉 BD-P 〉 NH4Cl-P. The highly positive relationship between the amounts of P released from the sediments and those in the NH4Cl-P and BD-P fractions, indicated that NH4Cl-P and BD-P were the main fractions that can release P easily.展开更多

Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) release from undisturbed core sediment sampled in the Meiliang Bay and Wuli Lake in July 1998 was 1.53 mg/m(2) and 2.24 mg/m(2) within 4 days, respectively. However during one hour experimental simulation of resuspension, SRP increased by 0.041 mg/L and 0.077 mg/L in die above cores, which indicate that a typical resuspension event in the take would be accompanied by the release of 10.77 mgSRP/m(2) and 23.1 mgSRP/m(2), respectively. The internal phosphorus loading induced by resuspensian is estimated to be 8 - 10 times greater than the release from undisturbed sediment. SRP release from the dried sediments during simulation of resuspension was mainly dependent on the disturbing intensity. Only when the wind strength gets to certain level, the influence of wind speed on phosphorus release appears significant, indicating that an exchangeable P pool, capable of altering equilibrium conditions in the take areas, is built up under strongly wind-exposed resuspension events.展开更多

During the experiment, dredging the upper 30 cm layer could efficiently reduce the interstitial PO4^3-P concentration and different P forms in the sediment. The P fluxes of the undredged and dredged cores ranged from -5.1 to 3047.6 and -60.7 to 14.4μg·m^-2·d^-1, respectively. The fluxes of the dredged cores were generally lower than those of the control. Differences in the fluxes between the dredged and undredged cores were statistically significant (P 〈 0.05) from March to June 2006. The sediment P in the dredged cores had a lower release potential than that in the control. Field investigation, profile analysis, geographical information analysis, and remote sensing were employed in combination to study the effect of sediment on Spartina alterniflora salt marshes of the coast in Jiangsu Province,East China. The results indicated that the propagation of Spartina alterniflora salt marshes was closely related to regional sediment conditions, especially the supply of fine-grained materials. Additionally, because of the dense and high grass in Spartina alterniflora salt marshes, wave energy and tidal currents were baffled and weaker than those of the adjacent, unvegetated mud flats. Fine sediment was hardly resuspended under the low energy conditions in the Spartina alterniflora salt marshes.展开更多

Experiments were conducted in order to characterize the relative roles of resuspended particles and pore water under different flow and sediment conditions. A conservative tracer (NaC1) and a reactive tracer (phosphate) were used as contaminants in the bottom sediment in a laboratory flume. The mixing between the overlying water and pore water occurred over a short time while the desorption of contaminants from fine-grained resuspended particles lasted a relatively long time. The effects of resuspended particles and pore water on the variations of release flux and concentration of contaminants in water with time under different hydrodynamic conditions were quantified. The results show that pore water dominated the initial release flux, which could be several orders of magnitude greater than the flux due to molecular diffusion. Flux contribution of desorption from sediment particles in the latter release could be equal to what was seen from pore water in the initial stage.展开更多

The dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration in sediment cores was also investigated. The results show that benthic algae effectively reduce the release of SRP from sediments to overlying water. The uptake of SRP by benthic algae, which is the direct way in which benthic algae affect the SRP release from sediments, is low in filtered water and increases with the SRP concentration. However, in the experiment, the increased uptake rate lasted for a short time(in one hour), and after that it returned to a low rate. Benthic algae make the DO concentration and the oxic layer thickness increased, which can indirectly reduce the SRP release from sediments. These findings indicate that benthic algae can reduce the SRP release from sediments in both direct and indirect ways. It seems that the indirect way also plays an important role in reducing the SRP release from sediments.展开更多

The nutrient layer distribution conditions of sampled sediment and its physical and chemical characteristics were analyzed to simulate and assess the influence degree to lake water quality. Based on the dynamic water exchanging experiments the nutrient release process in sediment and influence mechanism to substance exchanging on water-sediment interface was studied, and the correlation between the changing content of total phosphors and total nitrogen in sediment and covered water were analyzed for setting up a simulation model. At the same time the influence degree is explained in detail. The experimental results indicated that even if clean water without nutrient contents was used for water exchangement so as to decrease pollution or prevent eutrophication, however owing to the vertical nutrient distribution in lake sediment, it will lead to the increasing release amount greatly especially when the organic nutrient contained in sediment turns into inorganic status because of isolation. Besides the release process of total phosphate (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) were modeled and each nutrient's exchanging equation at interface caused by covered water nutrient concentration changing was set up. According to the simulating prediction, TP and TN content of cover water will also sustain a steady higher level in a long period. The nutrient release amount of sediment is not only affected by the covered water concentration but also connects with accumulative time. The experiments provide the fundamental theoretical and practical basis for taking ecological restoration project. And research is helpful to prevent or restore lake eutrophication.展开更多

Sedimentological studies conducted on inland water ecosystems during the last 15 years in Turkey can be categorized into two main topics. The first group of studies is concerned with heavy metal levels in sediment, with especial reference to the interaction between water, sediment and aquatic organisms. Additionally, the studies in question deal with the potential impacts of heavy metal concentrations on the ecosystem. The second group of studies is concerned with the role of eutrophication in the sediment as a result of serious contamination of inland water ecosystems. It is known that the sediment can directly influence the nutrient level in standing inland waters such as lakes and ponds by way of internal nutrient loading. In this context, studies regarding sediment, overlying water, sediment pore water and nutrient release from the sediment should be emphasized as these are important steps with respect to the eutrophication process. By keeping these studies in mind, the researcher in this study compiled and analyzed studies dealing with inland water ecosystems with differing nutrient levels and uses, including for drinking water, in Turkey’s drainage basins. In addition, field and laboratory studies regarding nutrient release from sediment into Turkey’s inland water ecosystems were evaluated in light of lake management practices.展开更多

[ Method] For existing pollution status of the Temple Lake, sediments and overlying water were sampled by the integrated device. Based on the technical route, through the orthogonal test, release processes of nitrogen and phosphorus from sediment were simulated, and their release speeds were estimated under different temperatures, pH and DO in the laboratory. Relationship between environmental factor and pollutant release was explored. [ Result] The integrated device of sediment sampling and test had simple structure, cheap cost and easy operation, and sediment pollution test could be conducted without disturbing sediment after collecting sediment. Among the studied three impact factors, temperature had the maximum influence on contaminant release process, which should be considered as the important factor of future research. [ Conclusion] Compared with routine research method of sediment contaminant release from other lakes, simulated method of contaminant release from sediment in the Temple Lake had many advantaqes, which was favorable for scientific research in latter period and actual lake control.展开更多

Determination by three processes revealed that: 1) DRP flux from early diagenesis in surface sediment is F = 31.9ug/(m2.d ), which is only 1/1600 of the ammonia released; 2) at normal temperature and in the long term, the TDP released by adsorption /desorption across the sediment-water interface is a function of the major environmental factors; and 3) based on the determined SODR and assumed average water depth H(m) and residence time tR(d), the maximum flux of DRP can be estimated.展开更多

文摘[Objective] The aim was to study the effects of dissolved oxygen(DO) on nitrogen release from Jialu River sediment.[Method] Based on the present pollution of Jialu River(in Zhengzhou),the effects of dissolved oxygen on nitrogen transformation in Jialu River sediment were analyzed through simulation test of original columnar sediment.[Result] DO was the main impact factor of nitrogen transformation in Jialu River sediment, and DO with different concentrations had various effects on the transformation time and transformation efficiency of ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen.Under aerobic environment, ammoniation, nitrosification and nitrification conducted completely, and the transformation time of ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen was less than that under anaerobic environment, while the transformation efficiency was higher than that under anaerobic environment.[Conclusion] The study could provide scientific references for the water pollution control of Jialu River.

文摘During the past century, natural and human modifications of environmental systems have greatly accelerated coastal salt marsh deterioration and shoreline retreat in many regions worldwide. Fine sediment was hardly resuspended under the low energy conditions in the Spartina alterniflora salt marshes.

文摘Sediment layers containing contaminants play a significant role in environmental hydrodynamics. Flux contribution of desorption from sediment particles in the latter release could be equal to what was seen from pore water in the initial stage.

文摘Between April 2002 and April 2003,in situ measurements of water depth, current velocity and suspended sediment content were carried out in edge region of East Chongming salt marsh and neighboring bald flat in the Changjiang (Yangtze) Estuary under different weather conditions.Cross-shore suspended sediment flux was calculated and analyzed. The results show that under calm weather conditions, the current velocity process in bald field and salt marsh area varied differently during semidiurnal tidal cycles.Owing to current velocity asymmetry, mean SSC during flood tide phase was 1.8 times higher than that of ebb tide phase. As a result, net onshore sediment flux controlled cross-shore suspended sediment transport process and salt marsh pioneer zone was generally accreting. There was significant positive correlation between total sediment flux and quartic power of maximum water depth. It indicates that tidal ranges dominate suspended sediment transport and sedimentation process in the salt marsh pioneer zone under the calm weather condition. The sedimentation rate on the adjacent mudflat was higher than the salt marsh, which induced stable accreting of salt marsh towards the sea.The wind events enhanced SSC and current velocity during the semidiurnal tides. And the remarkable onshore net sediment flux could occur on the high marsh and mudflat close to the marsh fringe during the short period under the rough weather condition.

文摘To evaluate the effect of benthic algae on soluble reactive phosphorus(SRP) release from sediments in shallow lakes, experiments on SRP release with and without benthic algae in sediment cores and an experiment on SRP uptake by benthic algae were conducted using the radioisotope(32P) tracing method. It seems that the indirect way also plays an important role in reducing the SRP release from sediments.

文摘The sediment distributed and insolated under lake was collected for experiments. And research is helpful to prevent or restore lake eutrophication.
文摘Turkey’s inland water ecosystem consists of 33 rivers (177.714 miles), 200 natural lakes (906.118 ha), 159 reservoirs (342.377 ha) and 750 ponds (15.500 ha). In addition, field and laboratory studies regarding nutrient release from sediment into Turkey’s inland water ecosystems were evaluated in light of lake management practices.

文摘[ Objective] The research aimed to study simulated method on the release of sediment pollutants in the Temple Lake. [ Conclusion] Compared with routine research method of sediment contaminant release from other lakes, simulated method of contaminant release from sediment in the Temple Lake had many advantaqes, which was favorable for scientific research in latter period and actual lake control.

文摘The adsorption/desorption of phosphorus across the sediment -water interface is the main mechanism that controls the buffering capacity of DRP in coastal and estuarine water. Determination by three processes revealed that: 1) DRP flux from early diagenesis in surface sediment is F = 31.9ug/(m2.d ), which is only 1/1600 of the ammonia released; 2) at normal temperature and in the long term, the TDP released by adsorption /desorption across the sediment-water interface is a function of the major environmental factors; and 3) based on the determined SODR and assumed average water depth H(m) and residence time tR(d), the maximum flux of DRP can be estimated.
