A large aspect ratio of the structure increases the risk of overturning and reduces the lateral stiffness of the structure, leading to significant tensile and compressive stresses in the isolated bearings. To study the effect of aspect ratio on the seismic response and overturning resistance of a new staggered story isolated structure, three models with different aspect ratios were established. Nonlinear time-history analysis of the three models was conducted using ETABS finite element software. The results indicate that the overturning moment and overturning resistance moment of the superstructure in the new staggered story isolated structure increase with an increasing aspect ratio. However, the increase in the overturning moment of the superstructure is much greater than the increase in the overturning resistance moment, resulting in a decrease in the overturning resistance ratio of the superstructure with an increasing aspect ratio. The overturning moment and overturning resistance moment of the substructure in the new staggered story isolated structure decrease with an increasing aspect ratio. However, the decrease in the overturning moment of the substructure is greater than the decrease in the overturning resistance moment, leading to an increase in the overturning resistance ratio of the substructure with an increasing aspect ratio. The decrease in the overturning resistance ratio of the superstructure in the new staggered story isolated structure is much greater than the increase in the overturning resistance ratio of the substructure. Therefore, as the aspect ratio of the overall structure increases, the overturning resistance ratio of the superstructure and the entire structure decreases.展开更多

In the present study, a new semi-active damping system using variable amplification will be investigated for adaptive baseisolation. It uses a novel variable amplification device (VAD) connected in series with a passive damper. The VAD is capable of producing multiple amplification factors, each corresponding to a different amplification state. Forces from the damper are amplified to the structure according to the current amplification state, which is selected via a semi-active control algorithm specifically tailored to the system's tmique damping characteristics. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the VAD-damper system for adaptive base-isolation, numerical simulations are conducted for three and seven-story base-isolated buildings subject to both far and near-field ground motions. The results indicate that the system can achieve significant reductions in response compared to the base-isolated buildings with no damper. The proposed system is also found to perform well compared to a typical semi-active damper.展开更多

In this paper, a simplified constitutive model based on the classic theory of plasticity is proposed to simulate the behavior of the superelasticity of the SMA, in which the martensite volume fraction is considered as one of the state variables. Comparisons between simulation results and experimental results are made and indicate that the proposed constitutive model yields stress-strain curves that are in good agreement with the experimental ones. Thus, the proposed model can correctly simulate the yield mechanism and energy dissipation capacity of the SMA. Next, in order to make full use of the superelasticity of SMA, a new SMA isolator composed of pre-tensioned SMA bars is presented. Then, a finite element analytical model is established to simulate the behavior of the SMA isolator according to its configuration and simplified constitutive model. Finally, a simplified design method for long-span structures installed with SMA isolators is proposed, which is further used to investigate the isolation effects of a space grid structure. Results show that the SMA isolator can reduce the seismic responses of the structure effectively, which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed SMA isolation method.展开更多

A comparative study on the dynamic responses of asymmetric base-isolated structures under near-fault and far-field ground motions were conducted to investigate the effects of eccentricity in the isolation system and in the superstructures, the ratio of the uncoupled torsional to lateral frequency of the superstructure and the pulse period of near-fault ground motions on the nonlinear seismic response of asymmetric base-isolated structures. Numerical results show that eccentricity in the isolation system makes asymmetric base-isolated structure more sensitive to near-fault ground motions, and the pulse period of near-fault ground motions plays an import role in governing the seismic responses of asymmetric base-isolated structures.展开更多

Closed-form solutions for the entire system, including a superstructure, seismic isolator, and numerous soil layers overlying a half-space, were obtained. The formulations obtained in this study simply in terms of well-known frequencies and mechanical impedance ratios can explicitly interpret the dynamic behavior of a base-isolated structure interacting with multiple soil layers overlying a half-space. The key factors influencing the performance of the isolation system are the damping ratio of the isolator and the ratio of the natural frequency of the fixed-base structure to that of the isolated structure by assuming that the superstructure moves as a rigid body. This study reveals that higher damping in the base isolator is unfavorable to higher mode responses that usually dominate the responses of the superstructure and that the damping mechanism plays an important role in transmitting energy in addition to absorbing energy. It is also concluded that it is possible to design a soft soil layer as an isolation system for isolating vibration energy.展开更多

According to different types of base isolation devices, laminated rubber bearing which is made by thin layers of steel shims bonded by rubber is one of the most popular devices to reduce the effects of earthquake in the buildings. Laminated rubber bearings should be protected against failure or instability because failure of isolation devices may cause serious damage on the structures. Hence, the prediction of the behaviour of the laminated rubber bearing with different properties is essential in the design of a seismic bearing. In this paper, a finite element modeling of the laminated rubber bearing is presented. The procedures of modeling the rubber bearing with finite element are described. By the comparison of the numerical and the experimental, the validities of modelling and results have been determined. The results of this study perform that there is a good agreement between finite element analysis and experimental results.展开更多

Through the programs, the influences of various seismic performance factors, e.g., rolling friction coefficient, spring constant, were systematically investigated. Results show that by increasing the rolling friction coefficient, the structural relative displacement due to seismic load effectively decreases, while the structural response magnitude varies mainly depending on the correlations between the following factors: the spring constant, the earthquake intensity, and the rolling friction coefficient. Furthermore, increasing the spring constant can decrease the structural relative displacement, as well as residual displacement, however, it increases the structural response magnitude. Finally, based on the analyses of various seismic performance factors subjected to the scenario earthquakes, optimized theoretical seismic performance can be achieved by reasonably combining the spring constant and the rolling friction coefficient.展开更多

The simulated damage is compared with field observations to validate the numerical model, based on which a parametric study was performed to provide insight into the failure process and damage patterns of steel grids. The results suggest that the grid damage is strongly related to roofsubstructure interactions. These include not only the substructure's amplification of the vibration, but the uncoordinated displacement of the substructure's columns which support the grid also play an equally important role. In particular, the latter effect may significantly alter the internal force distribution in the steel grid and lead to unexpected buckling of members that are proportioned as tension-only members. While such interactions are generally not accounted for in the design practice for grid structures in China, similar seismic damage may be expected for other existing grid roofs in future earthquakes. As is also demonstrated in this study, seismic isolation of the roof is a promising solution to protect grid roof structures by mitigating the detrimental effects of roof-substructure interactions.展开更多

In this paper, two isolation models with /without WRBs,taking an actual engineering as the background, are established in the finite element software ETABS. The one with WRBs has horizontal damping coefficient less than 0. 40 while the other between 0. 40 and 0. 53. WRBs are simulated by Plastic 1element and the collaborative work between them and isolation layer is described by a mechanical model. Time history analysis is conducted on the models to compare their responses under earthquake excitations. Results show that the one with WRBs,but less lead-rubber bearings( LRBs),has better damping effect than the other, although they both can meet wind requirements. It is also shown that under normal conditions and small earthquakes,WRBs function well and the isolation layer will not yield; under moderate earthquakes,WRBs will yield and be destroyed to stop functioning but without affecting the damping effect of the upper structure.Additionally, the total yield shear force provided by LRBs is proposed to be close to the standard value of wind load.展开更多

T...By taking a rolling-spring isolation system as the study object, the effects of the non-uniform distribution of rolling friction coefficient on its isolation performance were analyzed by a compiled computer program. The results show that the errors associated with the structural maximum relative displacement, acceleration and residual displacement due to ignoring the friction variability sequentially grow. This rule is weakened by the spring action, however, the unreasonable spring constant will cause sympathetic vibration. Under the condition of large friction variability, in the calculation of the structural maximum relative displacement and acceleration, the friction variability should be considered. When the structural residual displacement is concerned, the variability of rolling friction coefficient should be fully considered regardless of the friction variability.展开更多

文摘The aspect ratio of the structure has a significant impact on the overall stability of the ultra high-rise building. Therefore, as the aspect ratio of the overall structure increases, the overturning resistance ratio of the superstructure and the entire structure decreases.

文摘A design procedure for improving the seismic performance of unequal-span underground structures by installing isolation devices at the top end of columns is proposed based on the seismic failure mode of frame-type underground structures and the design concept of critical support columns.A two-dimensional finite element model(FEM)for a soil-underground structure with an unequal-span interaction system was established to shed light on the effects of a complex subway station with elastic sliding bearings(ESB)and lead rubber bearings(LRB)on seismic mitigation. It was found that the stiffness and internal force distribution of the underground structure changed remarkably with the installation of isolation devices at the top end of the columns. The constraints of the beam-column joints were significantly weakened, resulting in a decrease in the overall lateral stiffness and an increase in the structural lateral displacement. The introduction of the isolation device effectively reduces the internal force and seismic damage of the frame column;however, the tensile damage to the isolation structure, such as the roof, bottom plate, and sidewall, significantly increased compared to those of the non-isolation structure.Although the relative slip of the ESB remains within a controllable range under strong earthquake excitation as well as frame columns with stable vertical support and self-restoration functions, the LRB shows a better performance during seismic failure and better lateral displacement response of the unequal-span underground structure. The analysis results provide new ideas and references for promoting the application of seismic isolation technology in underground structures.

The results of this study perform that there is a good agreement between finite element analysis and experimental results.

文摘Long-period structures(e.g.Isolated structures)tend to produce pseudo-resonance with low frequency compo-nents of long-period ground motions, resulting in the increase in damage.Stiffness mutation occurs due to the set-back in the upper body of the large chassis structure. In the parts with stiffness mutation, the torsion effect caused by the tower is far greater than that of the chassis itself. In this study,a total of 273 ground motions are collected and then filtered into four types, including the near-field ordinary,near-field pulse,far-field ordinary, and far-field harmonic. An 8-degree(0.2 g)fortified large chassis base-isolated structure is established.Furthermore,ETABS program software is used to conduct nonlinear time history analysis on the isolation and seismic model under bi-directional earthquake ground motions. The comparison results show that the seismic isolation effect of the base-isolated structure under long-period ground motions is worse than that associated with ordinary ground motions when the seismic response reduction rate of the large base floor significantly decreases compared with that of the tower. When the inter-story displacement angle and the displacement of isolation layer of the chassis exceeds the limit of Code for Seismic Design of Buildings(GB 50011-2010),it is recommended to adopt composite seismic isolation technology or add limit devices.Under the condition of long-period ground motions, the base-isolated structure reduces the lateral-torsional coupling effect of the large chassis structure, while the torsion response of large chassis’top layer increases.Under long-period ground motions with the same acceleration peak, the response of the base-isolated structure increases much more than that of the seismic structure and the consideration of this impact is suggested to be added to the Code.

文摘In order to study an isolation system of rolling friction with springs, computer programs were compiled to evaluate the seismic performance based on its movement characteristics. Finally, based on the analyses of various seismic performance factors subjected to the scenario earthquakes, optimized theoretical seismic performance can be achieved by reasonably combining the spring constant and the rolling friction coefficient.
文摘At present, earthquakes are a serious problem for building.Severe damages and collapses of buildings were caused by earthquakes in different degrees. It is reported that there are more than 68,858 deaths and hundreds of billions RMB losses in the May 12,2008 Great Wenchuan Earthquake[16].So,more attention should be paid to seismic technology. In order to face the challenges of earthquake on building, the seismic retrofitting was put forward, which“is the modification of existing structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity, ground motion,or soil failure due to earthquakes”[2].

文摘The seismic behavior of a school gymnasium, whose steel grid roof was heavily damaged during the Mw6.6 Lushan earthquake in 2013, is simulated through nonlinear dynamic analysis. As is also demonstrated in this study, seismic isolation of the roof is a promising solution to protect grid roof structures by mitigating the detrimental effects of roof-substructure interactions.

文摘The purpose is to study the seismic reduction effect of an isolated structure, with wind-resistant bearings( WRBs) setting on its isolation layer to withstand great wind load, and the working mechanism of the WRB. It is also shown that under normal conditions and small earthquakes,WRBs function well and the isolation layer will not yield; under moderate earthquakes,WRBs will yield and be destroyed to stop functioning but without affecting the damping effect of the upper structure.Additionally, the total yield shear force provided by LRBs is proposed to be close to the standard value of wind load.

文摘By taking a rolling-spring isolation system as the study object, the effects of the non-uniform distribution of rolling friction coefficient on its isolation performance were analyzed by a compiled computer program. When the structural residual displacement is concerned, the variability of rolling friction coefficient should be fully considered regardless of the friction variability.
文摘Structural design simultaneously governed by earthquakes and environmental vibrations has received a lot of attention in recent years.Base-isolated composite structures are typically used in the above-mentioned structural design. The corresponding analysis involves validating structural safety under earthquakes and human comfort under environmental vibrations through a time-history analysis. Thus,a reasonable damping model is essential. In this work, the representatives of viscous damping model and rate-independent damping model, namely the Rayleigh damping model and uniform damping model, were adopted to investigate the influence of damping models on the time-history analysis of such structural designs. The energy dissipation characteristics of the above-mentioned damping models were illustrated via a dynamic test of recycled aggregate concrete specimens.A case study was performed on a base-isolated steelconcrete composite structure. The dynamic responses under the excitation of earthquakes and environmental vibrations were compared using different damping models. The uniform damping model was found to be more flexible than the Rayleigh damping model in dealing with excitations with different frequency components. The uniform damping model is both theoretically advantageous and easy to use, demonstrating its potential in dynamic analysis of structures designed simultaneously governed by earthquakes and environmental vibrations.
