Groundwater lowering is one of the most important countermeasures to avoid the risk of rainfall-triggered landslides.However,the long-term reliability of many drainage methods is often a matter of concern since the drains may easily get clogged.A new hydraulic-driven self-starting drainage method is presented in this paper.In the proposed Random Forest(RF)based robust design approach for the selfstarting drains,the datasets are generated using an automatically controlled numerical modeling technology.The deterministic analysis is carried out based on uncertain soil parameters and the specific designs selected using Uniform Design(UD).The ensemble of RF models is applied in the design process to improve computing efficiency.Safety requirements,design robustness,and cost efficiency are simultaneously considered utilizing multiobjective optimization.A straightforward and efficient framework that focuses on difficulties caused by an enormous design space is established for the robust design of the self-starting drains,and improved computation efficiency is achieved.The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated with a case study,the Qili landslide in Zhejiang Province,China. 展开更多

The present work deals with an investigation of the self-starting aerodynamic characteristics of VAWT under fluctuating wind. In contrast to the previous studies, the rotational speed of the turbine is not fixed, the rotation of the turbine is determined by the dynamic interaction between the fluctuating wind and turbine. A weak coupling method is developed to simulate the dynamic interaction between the fluctuating wind and passive rotation turbine, and the results show that if the fluctuating wind with appropriate fluctuation amplitude and frequency, the self-starting aerodynamic characteristics of VAWT will be enhanced. It is also found that compared with the fluctuation amplitude, the fluctuation frequency of the variation in wind velocity is shown to have a minor effect on the performance of the turbine. The analysis will provide straightforward physical insight into the self-starting aerodynamic characteristics of VAWT under fluctuating wind. 展开更多

In this study,wind tunnel experiment was carried out to investigate the self-staring capability for straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine.The flow visualization also was been performed at the rest of the rotor.The effect of the azimuthal angle of blade position relative to wind direction on the self-starting capability was discussed based on the results of flow visualization.The torque and centripetal force of the rotor when the self-starting behavior starts were roughly calculated with the flow visualization results of the rotor.It is suggested that there exists the condition of wind speed and configuration of the blade position of the rotor at the rest of rotor to the reach to situational rotation number. 展开更多

Collective pitch control and individual pitch control algorithms were present for straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine to improve the self-starting capacity.Comparative analysis of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine(SB-VAWT) with or without pitch control was conducted from the aspects of aerodynamic force,flow structure and power coefficient.The computational fluid dynamics(CFD) prediction results show a significant increase in power coefficient for SB-VAWT with pitch control.According to the aerodynamic forces and total torque coefficient obtained at various tip speed ratios(TSRs),the results indicate that the blade pitch method can increase the power output and decrease the deformation of blade;especially,the total torque coefficient of blade pitch control at TSR 1.5 is about 2.5 times larger than that of fixed pitch case.Furthermore,experiment was carried out to verify the feasibility of pitch control methods.The results show that the present collective pitch control and individual pitch control methods can improve the self-starting capacity of SB-VAWT,and the former is much better and its proper operating TSRs ranges from 0.4 to 0.6. 展开更多

Wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources, straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine(S-VAWT) appears to be particularly promising for the shortage of fossil fuel reserves owing to its distinct advantages, but suffers from poor self-starting and low power coefficient. Variable-pitch method was recognized as an attractive solution to performance improvement, thus majority efforts had been devoted into blade pitch angle effect on aerodynamic performance. Taken into account the local flow field of S-VAWT, mathematical model was built to analyze the relationship between power outputs and pitch angle. Numerical simulations on static and dynamic performances of blade were carried out and optimized pitch angle along the rotor were presented. Comparative analyses of fixed pitch and variable-pitch S-VAWT were conducted, and a considerable improvement of the performance was obtained by the optimized blade pitch angle, in particular, a relative increase of the power coefficient by more than 19.3%. It is further demonstrated that the self-starting is greatly improved with the optimized blade pitch angle. 展开更多

Bearingless switched reluctance motor(BSRM) not only combines the merits of bearingless motor(BM) and switched reluctance motor(SRM), but also decreases the vibration and acoustic noise of SRM, so it could be a strong candidate for high-speed driving fields. Under the circumstances, a 12/14 BSRM with hybrid stator pole has been proposed due to its high output torque density and excellent decoupling characteristics between torque and suspension force. However, this motor has torque dead-zone, which leads to problems of self-start at some rotor positions and large torque ripple during normal operation. To solve the existing problems in the 12/14 type, an asymmetric rotor pole type BSRM is proposed. The structure and design process of the proposed motor is presented in detail. The characteristics of the proposed motor is analyzed and compared with that of the 12/14 type. Furthermore, prototype of the proposed structure is designed, manufactured and experimented. Finally, simulation and test results are illustrated and analyzed to prove the validity of the proposed structure. 展开更多

The TBF laser generates a third harmonic mode-locked soliton pulse train with a high repetition rate of 50 MHz and a pulse duration of 1.86 ps. The laser operates at 1 901.6 nm with an average power of 6.6 mW, corresponding to a pulse energy of 0.132 nJ, at a 1 552 nm pump power of 723.3 roW. 展开更多

We have experimentally studied the mode-locking dynamics of a polarization-maintaining figure-of-eight laser which has a semiconductor optical amplifier as gain medium. Self-starting mode-locking at the fundamental repetition rate of 18 MHz is obtained at the lasing threshold, and further increasing the bias current leads to the progressive emission of additional optical pulses in each round trip and eventually to mode-locked emission at increasingly high harmonics of the fundamental repetition rate, up to 2.45 GHz. The intensity autocorrelation of the amplified mode-locked pulses has a full width at half-maximum duration of 382 fs, which corresponds to a pulse duration of 247 fs. 展开更多

Real-time spectroscopy based on an emerging time-stretch technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain,opening several fascinating explorations of nonlinear dynamics in mode-locked lasers.However,the self-starting process of mode-locked lasers is quite sensitive to environmental perturbation,which causes the transient behaviors of lasers to deviate from the true buildup process of solitons.We optimize the laser system to improve its stability,which suppresses the Q-switched lasing induced by environmental perturbation.We,therefore,demonstrate the first observation of the entire buildup process of solitons in a mode-locked laser,revealing two possible pathways to generate the temporal solitons.One pathway includes the dynamics of raised relaxation oscillation,quasimode-locking stage,spectral beating behavior,and finally the stable single-soliton mode-locking.The other pathway contains,however,an extra transient bound-state stage before the final single-pulse modelocking operation.Moreover,we propose a theoretical model to predict the buildup time of solitons,which agrees well with the experimental results.Our findings can bring real-time insights into ultrafast fiber laser design and optimization,as well as promote the application of fiber laser. 展开更多
