Based on the nonlinear displacement-strain relationship, the virtual work principle method was used to establish the nonlinear equilibrium equations of steel beams with semi-rigid connections under vertical uniform loads and temperature change.Considering the non-uniform temperature distribution across the thickness of beams, the formulas for stresses and vertical displacements were presented. On the basis of a flowchart for analysis of the numerical example, the effect of temperature change on the elastic behavior of steel beams was investigated. It is found that the maximal stress is mainly influenced by axial temperature change, and the maximal vertical displacement is principally affected by temperature gradients. And the effect of temperature gradients on the maximal vertical displacement decreases with the increase of rotational stiffness of joints. Both the maximal stress and vertical displacement decrease with the increase of rotational stiffness of joints. It can be concluded that the effects of temperature changes and rotational stiffness of joints on the elastic behavior of steel beams are significant. However, the influence of rotational stiffness becomes smaller when the rotational stiffness is larger. 展开更多

A 9-story concrete-filled steel tubular frame model is used to analyze the response of joints due to sudden column loss. Three different models are developed and compared to study the efficiency and feasibility of simulation, which include substructure model, beam element model and solid element model. The comparison results show that the substructure model has a satisfying capability, calculation efficiency and accuracy to predict the concerned joints as well as the overall framework. Based on the substructure model and a kind of semi-rigid connection for concretefilled square hollow section steel column proposed in this paper, the nonlinear dynamic analyses are conducted by the alternate path method. It is found that the removal of the ground inner column brings high-level joint moments and comparatively low-level axial tension forces. The initial stiffness and transmitted ultimate moment of the semi-rigid connection are the main factors that influence the frame behavior, and their lower limit should be guaranteed to resist collapse. Reduced ultimate moment results in drastic displacement and axial force development, which may bring progressive collapse. The higher initial stiffness ensures that the structure has a stronger capacity to resist progressive collapse. 展开更多

This study involves the development of an analytical model for understanding the behavior of the extended, stiffened end-plate moment connections with eight high strength bolts. Modeling of the connection as an assemblage of finite elements (FE) used for load deformation analysis, with material, and contact nonlinearities are developed. Results from the FE mathematical model are verified with results from the ANSYS computer program as well as with the test results. Sensitivity and feasibility studies are carried out. Significant geometry and force related variables are introduced;and by varying the geometric variables of the connections within a practical range, a matrix of test cases is obtained. Maximum end-plate separation, maximum bending stresses in the end-plate, and the forces from the connection bolts for these test cases are obtained. From the FE analysis, a database is produced to collect results for the artificial neural network analysis. Finally, salient features of the optimized Artificial Neural Network (ANN) via Genetic Algorithm (GA) analysis are introduced and implemented with the aim of predicting the overall behavior of the connection. 展开更多

Performance-based design for a constructional steel frame in nonlinear-plastic region requires an improvement in order to achieve a reliable structural analysis. The need to explicitly consider the nonlinear behaviour of structures makes the numerical modelling approach much more favourable than expensive and potentially dangerous experimental work. The parameters considered in the analysis are not limited to the linear change of geometry and material yielding, but also include the effect of large deformations, geometrical imperfections, load eccentricities, residual stresses,strain-unloading,and the nonlinear boundary conditions.Such analysis requires the use of accurate mathematical modelling and effective numerical procedures for solving equations of equilibrium. With that in mind, this paper presents the mathematical formulations and finite element procedures of nonlinear inelastic steel frame analysis with quasi-static semi-rigid connections.Verification and validation of the developed analytical procedures are conducted and good agreements are obtained. It is an approach that enables the structural behaviour of constructional steel frames to be traced throughout the entire range of loading until failure. It also provides information on the derivation of the structural analysis by using finite element method. 展开更多

In beam-to-column joint with bolted end-plate connection, the structural details of column flange reinforced by backing plate and column web panel reinforced by supplementary plate are analyzed. The joint is divided into some basic components, and the initial stiffness of each component is obtained.Especially, the initial stiffness of reinforced components is drawn by theoretical model and finite element analysis. The initial stiffness of reinforced joint can be obtained by assembling the initial stiffness of each component. The design moment resistance of column flange reinforced by backing plate is deduced based on yield line method, and the design moment resistances of other components are deduced based on present codes. The design moment resistance of the reinforced joint is then determined by the minimum of the design moment resistances of all components.By comparison with the results of finite element calculation,it is verified that the method to calculate the initial stiffness of reinforced joint is accurate enough to be used to estimate the rigid behavior of the joint and to make parametric study. 展开更多

Tenon-mortise joint is widely used in traditional timber structures around the world. This paper summarizes the results of an experimental study of the structural behavior of tenon-mortise joints made with glulam and CNC technology instead of traditional material and manual work.30 full-scale tenonmortise joints were manufactured and tested under monotonic loading, and the effects of dimension, shape, processing error and adhesive were evaluated. It was found that the round rectangular shaped tenon-mortise joints were comparable with traditional joints in terms of structural performance, but were time and labor saving. The variability of the proposed tenon-mortise joints was lower, which would benefit the design value.Applying adhesive between tenon and mortise increased the average stiffness by 4.3 times and average moment capacity by 27.4%,respectively.The gaps between wood members had little effect on the capacity and stiffness in monotonic bending but may influence the energy dissipation ability in cyclic bending. This study showed the feasibility of combining the traditional joinery method with modern wood products and manufacturing technology, which may promote the application of tenon-mortise joints in modern timber structures. 展开更多

The design of tubular steel scaffold-type shoring is usually performed by calculating the load capacity of the elements, taking into account their axial strength, mainly. Geometric stiffness effects and changes in the stiffness of connections are seldom considered. This paper assesses the stability of tubular steel shores using experimental and numerical approaches that take into account geometric nonlinearities as well as the features of the elements used to make the link between the steel tubes (pressed double coupler--right angle). The increase in overall stiffness generated by diagonal bars used in the analyzed models was examined. The results obtained show the importance of using P-delta analyses in this kind of structure in order to evaluate structure's overall stability even when compressive stresses are within acceptable ranges of code limits. 展开更多

Based on molecular mechanics and the deformation characteristics of the atomic lattice structure of graphene, a modifi ed molecular structure mechanics method was developed to improve the original one, that is, the semi-rigid connections were used to model the bond angle variations between the C-Cbonds in graphene. The simulated results show that the equivalent space frame model with semi-rigid connections for graphene proposed in this article is a simple, efficient, and accurate model to evaluate the equivalent elastic properties of graphene. Though the present computational model of the semi-rigid connected space frame is only applied to characterize the mechanical behaviors of the space lattices of graphene, it has more potential applications in the static and dynamic analyses of graphene and other nanomaterials. 展开更多

This paper presents a simplified beam design method for semi-rigid composite frames with vertical loading at the serviceability limit state. Equations were developed to determine the deflections of the composite beam allowing for both joint flexibility and beam sectional properties, along with a formula for the connection secant stiffness. The equations for the connection stiffness are more accurate than previous equations used because it considers the beam-to-column stiffness ratio and the beam-to-connection stiffness ratio. The equations were validated by the experimental results for two semi-rigid composite frames. The equations agree well with the experimental data because they take into account the actual beam-to-column connections and the composite action between the steel beam and the concrete slab. 展开更多
