Common understanding of sensor calibration is essential for the effective communication among sensor vendors, calibration scientists, satellite operators, program managers, and remote sensing data users, who must cooperate to ensure that a nation's strategic investment in a sophisticated operational environmental satellite system serves the nation's interest and enhances the human lives around the world. Examples of calibration activities at NOAA/NESDIS/ORA are selected to further illustrate these concepts and to demonstrate the lessons learned from the past experience.展开更多
This paper deals with instrumenting a mechatronic system,through the incorporation of suitable sensors,actuators,and other required hardware.Sensors(e.g.,semiconductor strain gauges,tachometers,RTD temperature sensors...This paper deals with instrumenting a mechatronic system,through the incorporation of suitable sensors,actuators,and other required hardware.Sensors(e.g.,semiconductor strain gauges,tachometers,RTD temperature sensors,cameras,piezoelectric accelerometers)are needed to measure(sense)unknown signals and parameters of a system and its environment.The information acquired in this manner is useful in operating or controlling the system,and also in process monitoring;experimental modeling(i.e.,model identification);product testing and qualification;product quality assessment;fault prediction,detection and diagnosis;warning generation;surveillance,and so on.Actuators(e.g.,stepper motors,solenoids,dc motors,hydraulic rams,pumps,heaters/coolers)are needed to"drive"a plant.Control actuators(e.g.,control valves)perform control actions,and in particular they drive control devices.Micro-electromechanical systems(MEMS)use microminiature sensors and actuators.MEMS sensors commonly use piezoelectric,capacitive,electromagnetic and piezoresistive principles.MEMS devices provide the benefits of small size and light weight(negligible loading errors),high speed(high bandwidth),and convenient mass-production(low cost).The process of instrumentation involves the identification of proper sensors,actuators,controllers,signal modification/interface hardware,and software with respect to their functions,operation,parameters,ratings,interaction with each other,so as to achieve the performance requirements of the overall system,and interfacing/integration/tuning of the selected devices into the system,for a given application.This paper presents the key steps of instrumenting a mechatronic system,in a somewhat general and systematic manner.Examples are described to illustrate several key procedures of instrumentation.展开更多

The instrument for three-dimensional (3D) surface topography measurement was composed of a high precision displacem...We developed a measuring instrument that had wide range, high precision, small measuring touch force. The instrument for three-dimensional (3D) surface topography measurement was composed of a high precision displacement sensor based on the Michelson interference principle, a 3D platform based on vertical scanning, a measuring and control circuit, and an industrial control computer. It was a closed loop control system, which changed the traditional moving stylus scanning style into a moving platform scanning style. When the workpiece was measured, the lever of the displacement sensor returned to the balanced position in every sample interval according to the zero offset of the displacement sensor. The non-linear error caused by the rotation of the lever was, therefore, very small even if the measuring range was wide. The instrument can measure the roughness and the profile size of a curved surface.展开更多

The sensor circuit ensures high sensitivity,h...A novel sensor for micro-magnetic field detection is proposed based on the physical characteristics and giant magneto-impedance (GMI) effect of Fe-Co-Si-B amorphous wires. The sensor circuit ensures high sensitivity,high detection precision,fast response and small power consumption. The signal processing circuit taking complex programmable logic device (CPLD) as core chip not only improves the identification ability for pseudo ferromagnetic objects,but also ensures the real-rime response. It is the foundation for the proposed sensor to serve widely in military and civil. By using its high sensitivity for geomagnetism variation,as an application example,the sensor is used to compare and analyze different cars.展开更多
