Purpose: Impaired postural control has been reported in females with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). This study aimed to investigate a) differences in central sensory reception and integration abilities for postural control between older females with and without FMS, and b) the influence of a secondary cognitive task on postural control in altered sensory environments. Methods: The performances of 10 older females with FMS were compared to eight age-matched healthy females across single and dual task conditions using the Sensory Organization Test®. Results: No significant group differences were evident for Composite Equilibrium Score (CES) in the single task condition (p = 0.06) but a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.96) was obtained, suggesting a clinically relevant difference existed between groups with respect to general sensory reception and integration abilities. Single trial Equilibrium Scores (ESs) for both groups declined significantly in the more complex sensory conditions across both task conditions (p < 0.01) with a greater decline evident for the FMS group in sensory condition 4 in the dual-task condition (p = 0.04). The FMS group also experienced multiple falls in sensory conditions 5 and 6 across both task conditions with a significantly higher percentage of falls evident for the FMS group in condition 6 across both task conditions (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Overall postural stability was significantly lower in the FMS group when compared to an age-matched control group. Postural stability declined further in the FMS group when attempting to perform a secondary cognitive task in both sensory conditions that primarily relied on vestibular inputs for postural control. A greater focus on multisensory and dual-task training in a balance environment may benefit older females with FMS. 展开更多

This study investigated the relationship among the severity of hearing impairment, vestibular function and balance function in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSNHL).A total of 35 ISSNHL patients(including 21 patients with vertigo) were enrolled. All of the patients underwent audiometry, sensory organization test(SOT),caloric test, cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential(cV EMP) test and ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential(o VEMP) test.Significant relationship was found between vertigo and hearing loss grade(P=0.009),and between SOT VEST grade and hearing loss grade(P=0.001).The abnormal rate of o VEMP test was the highest, followed by the abnormal rates of caloric and c VEMP tests, not only in patients with vertigo but also in those without vertigo. The vestibular end organs were more susceptible to damage in patients with vertigo(compared with patients without vertigo).Significant relationship was found between presence of vertigo and SOT VEST grade(P=0.010).We demonstrated that vestibular end organs may be impaired not only in patients with vertigo but also in patients without vertigo. The cochlear and vestibular impairment could be more serious in patients with vertigo than in those without vertigo.Vertigo does not necessarily bear a causal relationship with the impairment of the vestibular end organs.SOT VEST grade could be used to reflect the presence of vertigo state in the ISSNHL patients.Apart from audiometry, the function of peripheral vestibular end organs and balance function should be evaluated to comprehensively understand ISSNHL.Better assessment of the condition will help us in clinical diagnosis, treatment and prognosis evaluation of ISSNHL. 展开更多

The Melanophila acuminata beetle is attracted to forest fires via a pair of infrared sensory organs composed of sensilla. Our histological work showed that each sensillum contains lipid layers surrounding a protein layer and a unique polysaccharide base that is associated with a neuron to each sensillum. Infrared microscopy showed that the protein region maximally absorbs infrared radiation at 3 ~tm wavelength and at 10 ~tm, which corresponds to the known radiation produced by forest fires at 3 ~tm. Mathematical calculations showed that the physical properties of the sensilla are such that the expected temperature rise is insufficient for transduction of the infrared signal through mechanical means or as a thermal receptor as previously thought; hence the protein plays the pivotal role in perception of single photons and transmission of the signal within the sensilla. 展开更多
