This paper presents a procedure for designing a supplementary damping stabilizer for a static synchronous series compensator(SSSC) in multi-machine power systems. The objective is to shift the lightly damped inter-area modes toward the prescribed stability region.A lead-lag stabilizer is used to demonstrate this technique,in which a particular measure of stabilizer gain is considered as an objective function.Constraints of the problem for phase-lead and lag structures are derived. The objective function with the constraints is formed as a quadratic mathematical programming problem. For robust design, the parameters of the stabilizer are calculated under various operating conditions. Two types of SSSC-based stabilizer have been presented and designed.Numerical results including eigenvalue analysis and the nonlinear simulations on the 4-and 50-machine power systems are pre-sented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多

Relieving network congestions is a critical goal for the safe and flexible operation of modern power systems, especially in the presence of intermittent renewables or distributed generation. This paper deals with the real-time coordinated operation of distributed static series compensators(DSSCs) to remove network congestions by suitable modifications of the branch reactance. Several objective functions are considered and discussed to minimize the number of the devices involved in the control actions, the total losses or the total reactive power exchanged, leading to a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Then, a heuristic methodology combining the solution of a regular NLP with k-means clustering algorithm is proposed to get rid of the binary variables, in an attempt to reduce the computational cost. The proposed coordinated operation strategy of the DSSCs is tested on several benchmark systems, providing feasible and sufficiently optimal solutions in a reasonable time frame for practical systems. 展开更多

The unbalanced impedance of the asymmetric 3-phase wind power permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG)compensated by external circuits in series with the 3-phase windings is investigated in this paper. The asymmetric impedance includes the unbalanced resistances, unbalanced self-inductances,and unbalanced mutual inductances. From the perspective of the second harmonic inductances in dq-frame and from the perspective of the second harmonic power,it is theoretically demonstrated that the original asymmetric 3-phase system with asymmetric impedance can be modified to a balanced system by external circuits consisting of resistances and inductances. Therefore, the second harmonic power and DC bus voltage due to the asymmetries can be suppressed naturally without any software modifications. The feasibility of this compensation method is validated by elaborate experiments at different speeds and under different load condition, although the effectiveness might be slightly affected by the non-linearity of the compensation inductance in practice. 展开更多

Single Phase Induction Motor(SPIM)is widely used in industries at starting stage to provide high starting torque. The objective of the work is to develop a drive for Single Phase Induction Motor that does not use a start or run capacitor. In this work, the researchers present the details about Maximum Power Point Tracking using series-compensated Buck Boost Converter, resonant Direct Current(DC)to Alternate Current(AC)inverter and matrix converter-based drive. The proposed method provides a variable starting torque feature that can be adjusted depending upon machine load to ensure Power Quality(PQ).The system uses Series Compensated Buck Boost Converter(SCBBC)to derive the power from solar source and a Partial Resonant Inverter(PRI)between the Matrix Converter(MC)and DC link battery to reduce the switching loss. The application of Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation(SVPWM)ensures the improvement of power quality at driving terminals of SPIM.The proposed system has been math-ematically modelled and simulated in MATLAB SIMULINK environment and was validated using standardized experimental verification. 展开更多

The induction generator effect(IGE)and the openloop modal proximity(OLMP)are two different reasons why subsynchronous oscillations(SSOs)in a series-compensated power system(SCPS)may occur. The IGE attributes the growing SSOs to negative resistance, while the OLMP explains the SSO mechanism from the standpoint of modal conditions. In this paper,we investigate the connections between the IGE and the OLMP through equivalent RLC circuit and open-loop modal analysis. Our investigation is conducted for two types of seriescompensated power systems where either a synchronous generator or a DFIG is connected at the sending end.The investigation reveals the conditions,in which the IGE and the OLMP may jointly cause the growing SSOs,i.e.,both the IGE and the OLMP can explain why the growing SSOs occur.Furthermore, the investigation indicates that the IGE and the OLMP may be totally irrelevant and lead to growing SSOs separately. This implies that it is possible that in a SCPS,the growing SSOs are only due to the IGE,and the OLMP is non-existent,and vice versa.Hence, when the growing SSOs occurs in a SCPS,examination based on both the IGE and the OLMP should be carefully conducted in order to find if the oscillatory instability is due to the IGE,or the OLMP,or both of them. 展开更多

This paper presents analytical frequency domain method for harmonic modeling and evaluation of Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) based static synchronous series converter (SSSC). SVPWM is the best among all the PWM techniques. It gives a degree of freedom of space vector placement in a switching cycle. Dynamic modeling technique is used for space vector modulation (SVM) based voltage source converter that is adapted as a static synchronous series converter (SSSC) for harmonic analysis using dynamic harmonic domain. Performance of the SSSC is evaluated in dynamic harmonic domain simulation studies in MATLAB environment. The switching function spectra are necessary for harmonic transfer matrix which is calculated using Fourier series. In large inter connected power systems, inter-area oscillations are turned to be a severe problem. Hence inter-area oscillations cause severe problems like damage to generators, reduce the power transfer capability of transmission lines, increase wear and tear on network components, increase line losses etc. This paper is to maintain the stability of system by damping inter-area oscillations. Implementation of new equipment consists of high power electronics based technologies such as FACTs and proper controller design has become an essential to provide better damping performance than Power System Stabilizer (PSS). With development of Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS), remote signals have become as feedback signals to design Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC) for FACTs devices. For a single machine infinite power system with thyristor controlled series compensation(TCSC) device, which is affected by system model uncertainties, nonlinear time-delays and external unknown disturbances, we present a robust adaptive backstepping control scheme based on the radial basis function neural network(RBFNN). The RBFNN is introduced to approximate the complex nonlinear function involving uncertainties and external unknown disturbances, and meanwhile a new robust term is constructed to further estimate the system residual error, which removes the requirement of knowing the upper bound of the disturbances and uncertainty terms. The stability analysis of the power system is presented based on the Lyapunov function, which can guarantee the uniform ultimate boundedness(UUB) of all parameters and states of the whole closed-loop system. A comparison is made between the RBFNN-based robust adaptive control and the general backstepping control in the simulation part to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. 展开更多

Power interconnections are becoming increasingly important in various parts of the world, as incentives for power exchange between countries are growing. A current example is that the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan is launched by the European Council. For a variety of reasons, it is desirable to keep transmission corridors as slender as possible, i.e. keeping the number of lines as limited as possible, while still keeping adequate stability and power transmission capacity over the corridor. This is true, no matter whether it concerns a green-field project, or if it is a question of expanding an existing transmission corridor into higher power transmission capability. To achieve this, FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems), based on state of the art high power electronics, is a highly useful option, from technical, economical and environmental points of view, to increase the utilization and stability of a transmission system or intertie. The paper presents salient design features as well as benefits of recently installed FACTS devices, more specifically SVC (static var compensators) and series capacitors, for enabling or improving cross-border as well as interregional power transfer in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. 展开更多

Out-of-step oscillation separation devices based on apparent impedance angle trajectory are widely used in the power grid in China, and their reliability is of great importance. In this paper, the influence mechanism of series compensation on apparent impedance angle trajectory is analyzed. It reveals that series compensation capacitors reduce the equivalent impedance angle and consequently the apparent impedance angle cannot pass through all four zones, resulting in the risk of failure for the separation devices.A revised method of apparent impedance angle based on compensation principle is discussed, and then an improved out-of-step oscillation detection criterion is proposed. In view of the fact that the apparent impedance angle at the moment of maximum current is equal to the equivalent impedance angle during an oscillation process,a practical algorithm based on the compensated apparent impedance angle is proposed.RTDS tests are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the new criterion, considering transmission lines with a high series compensation level. 展开更多

Emerging sub-synchronous interactions(SSI)in wind-integrated power systems have added intense attention after numerous incidents in the US and China due to the involvement of series compensated transmission lines and power electronics devices.SSI phenomenon occurs when two power system elements exchange energy below the synchro-nous frequency.SSI phenomenon related to wind power plants is one of the most significant challenges to main-taining stability, while SSI phenomenon in practical wind farms, which has been observed recently, has not yet been described on the source of conventional SSI literature. This paper first explains the traditional development of SSI and its classification as given by the IEEE,and then it proposes a classification of SSI according to the current research status, reviews several mitigation techniques and challenges, and discusses analysis techniques for SSI.The paper also describes the effect of the active damping controllers, control scheme parameters, degree of series compensation, and various techniques used in wind power plants(WPPs).In particular,a supplementary damping controller with converter controllers in Doubly Fed Induction Generator based WPPs is briefly pronounced. This paper provides a real-istic viewpoint and a potential outlook for the readers to properly deal with SSI and its mitigation techniques, which can help power engineers for the planning, economical operation, and future expansion of sustainable development. 展开更多

The independent system operator (ISO) is a key element in the deregulated structure with one of the responsibilities of transmission congestion management (CM). The ISO opts market based solutions to manage congestion receiving bids from generation companies (GENCOs) as well as distribution companies (DISCOMs) to reschedule their generation and relocate demand. The nodal prices increases during the congestion hours and the demand response to nodal prices will be an effective tool for the control of congestion. In this paper, demand response-based CM has been proposed for a mix of pool and bilateral electricity market model. The linear bid curves have been considered for demand bids to respond to the congestion in the network. The bilateral demand has been obtained with minimum deviations in their preferred schedule. The impact of flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices viz static var compensator (SVC) and thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) has also been considered for demand management during congestion. Multi-line congestion cases have been considered to study the impact on demand response without and with FACTS devices. The proposed approach has been tested on the IEEE 24 bus test system. 展开更多

Suppression of the dynamic oscillations of tie-line power exchanges and frequency in the affected interconnected power systems due to loading-condition changes has been assigned as a prominent duty of automatic generation control(AGC). To alleviate the system oscillation resulting from such load changes, implementation of flexible AC transmission systems(FACTSs) can be considered as one of the practical and effective solutions. In this paper, a thyristor-controlled series compensator(TCSC), which is one series type of the FACTS family, is used to augment the overall dynamic performance of a multi-area multi-source interconnected power system. To this end, we have used a hierarchical adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system controller-TCSC(HANFISC-TCSC) to abate the two important issues in multi-area interconnected power systems, i.e., low-frequency oscillations and tie-line power exchange deviations. For this purpose, a multi-objective optimization technique is inevitable. Multi-objective particle swarm optimization(MOPSO) has been chosen for this optimization problem, owing to its high performance in untangling non-linear objectives. The efficiency of the suggested HANFISC-TCSC has been precisely evaluated and compared with that of the conventional MOPSO-TCSC in two different multi-area interconnected power systems, i.e., two-area hydro-thermal-diesel and three-area hydro-thermal power systems. The simulation results obtained from both power systems have transparently certified the high performance of HANFISC-TCSC compared to the conventional MOPSO-TCSC. 展开更多

This paper discusses the impacts of large voltage drops on very long HVDC transmission lines, especially when operating in a monopolar mode. The effect of using dedicated metallic return(DMR)conductors is discussed. The main focus is on the potential rise at the neutral point of the converters and the need for an increased range for the converter transformer tap changers. Two grounding schemes for multiterminals transnational HVDC systems are presented:single point low impedance grounding and high impedance multi-point grounding. The advantages of the high impedance scheme are discussed. An innovative compensation method for voltage drop effects using a series HVDC converter is presented along with simulation results. The novel series converter can address both issues of neutral voltage rise and the impractical tap changer range. To put the ideas into the perspective,a realistic example of a transnational HVDC connecting China, central Asia,Russia and West Europe is presented. 展开更多
