Method: Levels of Serum-CRP concentrations were deter-mined in 60 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, 30 healthy volunteers and patients in follow-up after completion of antitubercular treatment (DOTS therapy). Results: Serum-CRP levels were found to be significantly higher in smear-positive group as compared with the follow-up patients and smear-negative control group. The values were 43.65 ± 23.68, 9.88 ± 5.23 and 4.04 ± 3.85 mg/L respectively (P Conclusion: Serum-CRP levels are significantly correlated with disease severity in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Thus these findings from the present study would certainly add new criteria for early diagnosis of TB, which may lead to development of new strategies to treat TB.展开更多

Poly N-isopropyl acrylamide (PNIPA) and poly N-n-propyl-acrylamide (PNNPA) temperature sensitive hydrogels were chosen as the nonionic temperature sensitive hydrogels for concentration of very dilute aqueous protein solution. The separation properties of PNIPA and PNNPA hydr0gels with different network dimensions were studied and the modification of the hydrogels was surveyed in order to decrease their surface adsorption of protein molecules. The experimental results of the concentration of BSA (Bovin serum albumin) dilute aqueous solution by hydroxylpropyl methacrylate (HPMA) copolymerized PNIPA hydrogel were given. The value and the limitation of concentration of dilute aqueous protein solution by this method was evaluated.展开更多

This study determined the serum concentrations of cytokines induced acute phase proteins (Serum Amyloid A (SAA), Haptoglobin (Hp) and C-reactive protein (CRP)) and the levels of immunoreactive interleukins (IL-1, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5 and IL-6) in cattle naturally infected with helminths. We sampled a total of 480 slaughtered cattle of both sexes in a major abattoir in Ibadan, Nigeria. Sedimentation, floatation and modified McMaster techniques were employed to determine the degrees of helminth infections. Animals with eggs per gram (epg) less than 200 were adjudged to be apparently healthy. The serum concentrations of interleukins and acute phase proteins were determined using the Technicon AutoAnalyzer Model AA II. It was found that mean SAA (μg/l) and CRP (%) levels were significantly (P 0.05). Therefore, some acute phase proteins are involved in the pathophysiology of bovine helminthosis and are closely related to the inflammatory activation of the disease. In lieu of these findings, it is suggested that systemic markers of inflammation can identify subjects at high risk of natural bovine helminthosis and that IL-6 and SAA may be used as indicators for bovine helminthosis.展开更多

Methods: A total of 95 patients with SLE were divided into lupus nephritis group (LN group, n = 64) and non-lupus nephritis group (NLN group n=31) according to the diagnostic criteria of lupus nephritis, and another 35 healthy subjects were selected as normal control group. Blood samples were collected from all subjects before treatment. Serum CRP and serum uric acid concentrations were measured by ELISA. The levels of serum immunoglobulins were detected by immunoturbidimetry in the same time. Finally, the results were analyzed statistically. Results: The levels of serum CRP and serum uric acid in patients with SLE were significantly higher than those in control group. The levels of serum CRP and serum uric acid in LN group of SLE patients were significantly higher than those in NLN group and control group. Serum CRP level in NLN group was significantly higher than that in control group. Serum uric acid level in NLN group was slightly higher than that of the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant. The level of serum immunoglobulin in SLE patients was higher than that in control group. The levels of serum immunoglobulin IgG, IgA and IgM in LN group of SLE patients were significantly higher than those in NLN group and control group. The levels of serum immunoglobulin IgG, IgA and IgM in NLN group of SLE patients were all higher than those in control group. Conclusion: Humoral immune of SLE patients with renal injury was activated at different degree, B-cell hyperthyroidism, severe systemic inflammatory response and kidney damage at varying degrees. Serum CRP, serum uric acid and immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA and IgM) may be involved in SLE renal injury pathological process, which is the early diagnosis of reference indicators.展开更多

It was established that sensitivity of SAA as an activity marker was higher than of other acute phase reactants, because its levels were increased in 98.8% patients, whereas the level of CRP exceeded the norm in 80.8%, α1-AT--in 59.3%, Hp----in 43.5% and F--in 63.1% cases. The degree of increase of acute phase reactants directly related to the expressiveness of tuberculosis intoxication, the extent of the process in the lung and the quantity of MTB (M. tuberculosis) in sputum. We concluded that SAA was a useful marker of the process activity in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and its sensitivity was higher than that of other acute phase reactants.展开更多
