The revaluation of medicinal plants in the veterinary pharmacopoeia is essential for the development of livestock in Burkina Faso. In order to justify the use of C. sesamoides and S. hermonthica in the treatment of gastrointestinal parasitosis of small ruminants, a quantification of phenolic compounds as well as antioxidant activity and acute toxicité evaluation of both plants were performed. Acute toxicity was evaluated by administering a single dose of 2000 mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of both plants to mice. The highest total polyphenol content for C. sesamo?des was obtained in the ethyl acetate fraction with 47.236 ± 2.57 mgEAG/100mg while that of S. hermonthica was 74.871 ± 2.57 mgEAG/100mg obtained with the n-butanol Fraction. The dichloromethane extract of S. hermonthica obtained the highest total flavonoid content with 7.31 ± 0.48 mgEQ/100 while the highest total flavonoid content of C. sesamo?des was obtained with ethyl acetate fraction with 5.4273 ± 0.35 mgEQ/100mg. The aqueous extract of C. sesamo?des obtained the highest content of condensed tannins with 3.028 ± 0.13 mgEAT/100mg. Both plant’s extracts did not show any signs of toxicity in NMRI mice after administration of the dose of 2000 mg/kg. The antioxidant activity by DPPH, FRAP and ABTS methods was good compared to those of Quercetin and Trolox taken as standard. 展开更多

The painful sesamoid can be a chronic and disabling problem and isolating the cause can be far from straightforward. There are a number of forefoot pathologies that can present similarly to sesmoid pathologies and likewise identifying the particular cause of sesamoid pain can be challenging. Modern imaging techniques can be helpful. This article reviews the anatomy, development and morphological variability present in the sesamoids of the great toe. We review evidence on approach to history, diagnosis and investigation of sesamoid pain. Differential diagnoses and management strategies, including conservative and operative are outlined. Our recommendations are that early consideration of magnetic resonance imaging and discussion with a specialist musculoskeletal radiologist may help to identify a cause of pain accurately and quickly. Conservative measures should be first line in most cases.Where fracture and avascular necrosis can be ruled out, injection under fluoroscopic guidance may help to avoid operative intervention. 展开更多

Background: Fabella is a natural occurring sesamoid bone, cartilage or a mixture of both that is usually located at the posterolateral corner (PLC) of the knee [1]. Recently the PLC of the knee has been extensively investigated because it is a common site of injuries and diseases [2] [3]. The complexity of PLC anatomy needs to be fully understood because the fabella could be missed diagnosis as an osteochondral defect, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), calcific tendinitis, or foreign body. We present a case report of fabella syndrome triggered by trauma and also performed a review of literature for the various diagnoses that might be confused with fabella syndrome. Case presentation: A 29-year-old, Sudanese male presented to the trauma center in King Khalid Hospital in KSA, complaining of pain and partial swelling in his left knee joint due to trauma. Fabella was detected in the posterior lateral corner (PLC) of the knee joint embedded in the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle. All other pathological conditions were excluded. Conclusion: Fabella is sesamoid bone with variable size, found in the PLC. Commonly if present it causes periodic pain especially in the fully extended knee or it remains asymptomatic. Trauma, surgery, sports or heavy extreme activities may trigger the pain of asymptomatic fabella. Clinicians should consider that pain in the PLC of the knee can result from the presence of the fabella in a condition called fabella syndrome. 展开更多

Background A causal link between the metatarsus adductus and hallux valgus is not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the configurations of the metatarsus adductus deformity by radiological measurements and reappraise the relationship between hallux valgus and metatarsus adductus. Methods The first step was evaluation of the relationship between metatarsus adductus and hallux valgus on 143 dorsoplantar weight-bearing radiographs diagnosed as hallux valgus which was also known as bunions.Measurements including the hallux valgus angle (HVA),the intermetatarsal angle (IMA),the Kilmartin angle (KA),the tibial sesamoid position (TSP),and metatarsus adductus angle were taken. The metatarsus adductus angle is defined by Sgarlato's angle (SMA) and Engel's angle (EMA) respectively. Results The metatarsus adductus angle positively correlates with the HVA (r=0.590,P=0.000) and KA (r=0.601,P=0.000),yet negatively correlates with the grade of TSP,(r=-0.348,P=0.000).Contradiction of diagnosis existed in 22 (22/100) subjects diagnosed as metatarsus adductus by SMA yet normal by EMA.In this group, the correlation between HVA and metatarsus adductus angle was negative (r=-0.472,P=0.027).Conclusions EMA and SMA defined metatarsus adductus by different deformity apexes.Metatarsus adductus configurations in that the apex of the deformity lay in either the base of metatarsals or tarsus. They respectively correlate positively or negatively to the HVA. 展开更多

Two of them are present at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP)joint of the thumb. Fracture of the sesamoid bones of the thumb is a rare injury and the literature on the radial side is seldom reported. We reported a case of a patient with a fracture of the radial sesamoid at the MCP joint of the thumb in order to increase attention regarding this type of injuries. A 44-year-old male, high level gymnastic trainer, was helping one of his athletes during an exercise while he reported a hyperextension trauma to the MCP joint of the right thumb. One week after trauma, he presented to the hand surgeon complaining of a painful thumb at the MCP joint level on its palmar aspect. Standard A-P and lateral X-rays revealed a fracture of the radial sesamoid and the fracture was treated with a splint for 3 weeks. He was able to resumed his entire work 6 weeks after the injury. The sesamoid fractures is an indicator of the magnitude of the hyperextension injury and sometimes associated with tears of the volar plate ligament of the MCP joint. And a failure to recognize the ligament injury may lead to a long-term hyperextension instability on pinching. 展开更多
