With the rapid development of large megawatt wind turbines, the operation environment of wind turbine towers(WTTs)has become increasingly complex. In particular, seismic excitation can create a resonance response and cause excessive vibration of the WTT.To investigate the vibration attenuation performance of the WTT under seismic excitations,a novel passive vibration control device, called a prestressed tuned mass damper(PS-TMD),is presented in this study.First,a mathematical model is established based on structural dynamics under seismic excitation. Then, the mathematical analytical expression of the dynamic coefficient is deduced, and the parameter design method is obtained by system tuning optimization.Next, based on a theoretical analysis and parameter design, the numerical results showed that the PS-TMD was able to effectively mitigate the resonance under the harmonic basal acceleration. Finally, the time-history analysis method is used to verify the effectiveness of the traditional pendulum tuned mass damper(PTMD)and the novel PS-TMD device, and the results indicate that the vibration attenuation performance of the PS-TMD is better than the PTMD.In addition, the PS-TMD avoids the nonlinear effect due to the large oscillation angle, and has the potential to dissipate hysteretic energy under seismic excitation. 展开更多

Using seismic data recorded by Yunnan Telemetry Seismic Network from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2003, the dominant polarization directions of fast shear-waves are obtained at 10 digital seismic stations by SAM technique, a systematic analysis method on shear-wave splitting, in this study. The results show that dominant directions of polarizations of fast shear-waves at most stations are mainly at nearly N-S or NNW direction in Yunnan. The dominant polarization directions of fast shear-waves at stations located on the active faults are consistent with the strike of active faults, directions of regional principal compressive strains measured from GPS data, and basically consistent with regional principal compressive stress. Only a few of stations.show complicated polarization pattern of fast shear-waves, or are not consistent with the strike of active faults and the directions of principal GPS compressive strains, which are always located at junction of several faults. The result reflects complicated fault distribution and stress field. The dominant polarization direction of fast shear-wave indicates the direction of the in-situ maximum principal compressive stress is controlled by multiple tectonic aspects such as the regional stress field and faults. 展开更多

A total of 351 shear-wave splitting results at 25 stations were obtained from the seismic data recorded in period of January,2013 to December,2016,by a broadband seismic array deployed in the northern segment of Xiaojiang Fault Zone(n-XJFZ).Meanwhile,the stress field of the n-XJFZ was determined by inverting 140 focal mechanism solutions of the small earthquakes within the study area which were recorded in the same period. This determination confirmed a compressive stress in NW-SE orientation and an extensional stress in the NE-SW orientation, with little difference from those released by previous studies. The shear-wave splitting results show a spatial complexity in polarization orientation, different from one site to another.How-ever,the polarization orientations integrated for the subareas suggest that the fault trends seemingly played important roles. All the subareas bear two dominant orientations,N10°E and N90°E,both of which are different from the azimuths of the principal compressive stress, due to the fault distribution. The time delay averaged over the entire region is 4.56 ms/km,close to that of the upper boundary of the generally accepted interval worldwide but larger than those in most of the investigated regions in the Chinese mainland, which probably implies an alignment of more micro-cracks in the n-XJFZ.Interestingly,the 2014 Ms6.5 Ludian earthquake was found to have caused a variation in the time delays of the slow shear waves within the study area though its epicenter was outside. This earthquake resulted in an evident drop of the time delays remaining for 4 months, however, lifted a bit the time-delay level with respect to that prior to the earthquake. 展开更多

Seismic anisotropy reveals that seismic wave velocity, amplitude, and other physical properties show variations in different directions, which can be divided into lattice-preferred orientation(LPO) and shape-preferred orientation(SPO) according to its physical mechanisms. The main methods for studying seismic anisotropy include shearwave splitting analysis, P-wave travel time inversion and surface-wave tomography, etc. There are some differences and correlations among these methods. Seismic anisotropy is an important way to reveal the dynamic processes of crust-mantle evolution, and it is significant for monitoring crustal stress changes and improve seismic exploration studies. With the help of long-term observation, the application of machine learning techniques and combining inversion based on multiple phases would become potential developments in seismic anisotropy studies. This may improve the understanding of complex seismic anisotropic models, such as multiple layers anisotropy with an oblique axis of symmetry. 展开更多

Extensive high-speed railway(HSR)network resembled the intricate vascular system of the human body, crisscrossing mainlands.Seismic events, known for their unpredictability, pose a significant threat to both trains and bridges, given the HSR’s extended operational duration. Therefore, ensuring the running safety of train-bridge coupled(TBC)system, primarily composed of simply supported beam bridges,is paramount.Traditional methods like the Monte Carlo method fall short in analyzing this intricate system efficiently.Instead, efficient algorithm like the new point estimate method combined with moment expansion approximation(NPEM-MEA)is applied to study random responses of numerical simulation TBC systems.Validation of the NPEM-MEA’s feasibility is conducted using the Monte Carlo method.Comparative analysis confirms the accuracy and efficiency of the method, with a recommended truncation order of four to six for the NPEM-MEA.Additionally,the influences of seismic magnitude and epicentral distance are discussed based on the random dynamic responses in the TBC system. This methodology not only facilitates seismic safety assessments for TBC systems but also contributes to standard-setting for these systems under earthquake conditions. 展开更多

On the basis of the records of strong seismic events taking place in soft carbonate sediments, a new seismic sequence system of vibrational liquefaction is established, which consists of a series of units, such as escaped structure of micrite veins and liquefied deformation formed in the period of seismic liquefaction, land subsidence structure after liquefaction, tsunamic hummocky and turbidite produced by seismic events, This sequence is a generalization and summation of field observation in vast areas, which shows the whole process of a strong seismic event and provides an unified theoretical explanation. The pattern of the seismic sequence by vibrational liquefaction provides one of correlation standards for geologists in the field to discriminate events in carbonate sequences. Based on the pattern of seismic sequence, the authors first advance a new conception of the Palaeo-Tanlu (Tancheng-Lujiang) Zone and discuss primarily its geological significations. 展开更多

When propagating through anisotropic rocks in the crust, shear-waves split into faster and slower components with almost orthogonal polarizations. For nearly vertical propagation the polarization of fast shear- wave (PFS) is parallel to both the strike of the cracks and the direction of maximum horizontal stress, therefore it is possible to use PFS to study stress in the crust. This study discusses several examples in which PFS is applied to deduce the compressive stress in North China, Longmenshan fault zone of east edge of Tibetan plateau and Yunnan zone of southeast edge of Tibetan plateau, also discusses temporal variations of PFS orientations of 1999 Xiuyan earthquake sequences of northeastern China. The results are consistent to those of other independent traditional stress measurements. There is a bridge between crustal PFS and the crustal principal compressive stress although there are many unclear disturbance sources. This study suggests the PFS results could be used to deduce regional and in situ principal compressive stress in the crust only if there are enough seismic stations and enough data. At least, PFS is a useful choice in the zone where there are a large number of dense seismic stations. 展开更多

This paper presents the study of a three-dimensional(3D) isolation system.Firstly, the authors investigated the effects of an innovative 3D isolator, which was composed of a connecting plate,a rubber pad for vibration isolation in the vertical direction and a horizontal rubber bearing for seismic isolation in both horizontal directions.Secondly, the authors designed such a vibration isolation system and installed it underneath two specific residential buildings which were built directly over an existing subway communication hub platform in Beijing. These buildings required good performance vibration and seismic isolation system to reduce the impact from the running of nearby subway trains. Finally,in situ tests were conducted for both the isolated and the non-isolated buildings for the purpose of comparison. The test results showed that the maximum acceleration response level of the isolated superstructure is reduced by 10% as compared to that of the platform. The maximum attenuation of vibration reaches up to 25 dB.The 3D system explored in this paper is very effective in control and suppression of building vibration induced by earthquakes or running of trains. 展开更多

Earthquake is a kind of sudden and destructive random excitation in nature. It is significant to determine the probability distribution characteristics of the corresponding dynamic indicators to ensure the safety and the stability of structures when the intensive seismic excitation, the intensity of which is larger than 7,acts in train-bridge system.Firstly, the motion equations of a two-dimensional train-bridge system under the vertical random excitation of track irregularity and the vertical seismic acceleration are established, where the train subsystem is composed of 8 mutually independent vehicle elements with 48 degrees of freedom, while the single-span simple supported bridge subsystem is composed of 102D beam elements with 20 degrees of freedom on beam and 2 large mass degrees of freedom at the support.Secondly,Monte Carlo method and pseudo excitation method are adopted to analyze the statistical parameters of the system. The power spectrum density of random excitation is used to define a series of non-stationary pseudo excitation in pseudo excitation method and the trigonometric series of random vibration history samples in Monte Carlo method, respectively solved by precise integral method and Newmark-βmethod through the inter-system iterative procedure. Finally, the results are compared with the case under the weak seismic excitation, and show that the samples of vertical acceleration response of bridge and the offload factor of train obeys the normal distribution. In a high probability, the intensive earthquakes pose a greater threat to the safety and stability of bridges and trains than the weak ones. 展开更多

All underwater drilling and blasting operations generate seismic waves. However, due to a lack of suitable vibration sensing instruments, most studies on the propagation of seismic waves have been limited to shorelines near construction areas or wharfs, whereas comparatively few studies have beerconducted on the larger seafloor itself. To address this gap,a seafloor vibration sensor system was developed and applied in this study that consists of an autonomous acquisition storage terminal,soft-ware platform, and hole-plugging device that was designed to record the blasting vibration intensities received through submarine rocks at a given measurement point.Additionally, dimensional analyses were used to derive a predictive equation for the strength of blast vibrations that considered the in fluence of the water depth.By combining reliable vibration data obtained using the sensor system in submarine rock and the developed predictive equation,it was determined that the water depth was ar important factor influencing the measured vibration strength. The results using the newly derivedequation were compared to those determined using the Sadowski equation, which is commonly used on land, and it was found that predictions using the derived equation were closer to the experimental values with an average error of less than 10%,representing a significant improvement.Based on these results the developed sensor system and preliminary theoretical basis was deemed suitable for studying the propagation behavior of submarine seismic waves generated by underwater drilling and blasting operations. 展开更多

Seismic random vibration analysis of stochastic truss structures is presented. A new method called random factor method is used for dynamic analysis of structures with uncertain parameters, due to variability in their material properties and geometry. Using the random factor method, the natural frequencies and modeshapes of a stochastic structure can be respectively described by the product of two parts, corresponding to the random factors of the structural parameters with uncertainty, and deterministic values of the natural frequencies and modeshapes obtained by conventional finite element analysis. The stochastic truss structure is subjected to stationary or non-stationary random earthquake excitation. Computational expressions for the mean and standard deviation of the mean square displacement and mean square stress are developed by means of the random variable's functional moment method and the algebra synthesis method. An antenna and a truss bridge are used as practical engineering examples to illustrate the application of the random factor method in the seismic response analysis of random structures under stationary or non-stationary random earthquake excitation. 展开更多

Conventional vibrator-earth coupling model was set up on the linear system. Some assumptions in the application of linear theory to the vibrator problem play an insignificant role in the overall coupling structure. Obviously, non-linear behaviors can be modeled using a “hard-spring” form of the Duffing equation. Model dedicates that a qualitatively similar harmonic component is present for a broad range of possible mathematical descriptions. After some qualitative analysis about the non-linear system, some conclusion can be drawn. Firstly, The design of the vibrator weight should be abided by two points as followed: In order to avoid decoupling for the vibrator to the earth, the weight should be greater than the peak of the driving force amplitude as to keep the resultant force pointing to the earth’s core. On the other hand, for the limited energy output, the vibrator overweight may damage the system high-frequency ability.Secondly, as the driving force frequency approaching to the ground hard-spring inherent frequency, the energy transmission was found to climb its peak from the system energy absorbed curve. At last, due to the non-linear coupling model system, its load curve would come into unstable frequency range, which might limit the application of the Vibroseis conventional sweeping pattern-linear sweep. A new sweeping pattern was listed: the driving signal was the pseudo-random sequence modulated by a fixed frequency cosine signal satisfying with the exploration precision and absorbing efficiency. The synthesized signal was ready to be realized by the electromagnetic driven system. Even the side-lobes noise of its auto-correlation function was restrained well. The theory coming from the Vibrator-earth coupling model was applied to the design of the Portable High-frequency Vibrator System (PHVS), and the good result was obtained. By the analysis of the vibrator base plate signal, the model was proved to be true. The exploration research on PHVS made a first step on its following optimal design. 展开更多

Seismic anisotropy and its main features along the convergent boundary between Africa and Iberia are detected through the analysis of teleseismic shear-wave splitting. Waveform data generated by 95 teleseismic events recorded at 17 broadband stations deployed in the western Mediterranean region are used in the present study. Although the station coverage is not uniform in the Iberian Peninsula and north- west Africa, significant variations in the fast polarization directions and delay times are observed at stations located at different tectonic domains. Fast polarization directions are oriented predominantly NW-SE at most stations which are close to the plate boundary and in central Iberia; being consistent with the absolute plate motion in the region. In the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, fast velocity direc- tions are oriented nearly E--W; coincident with previous results. Few stations located slightly north of the plate boundary and to the southeast of lberia show E--W to NE-SW fast velocity directions, which may be related to the Alpine Orogeny and the extension direction in lberia. Delay times vary significantly between 0.2 and 1.9 s for individual measurements, reflecting a highly anisotropic structure beneath the recording stations. The relative motion between Africa and lberia represents the main reason for the observed NW-SE orientations of the fast velocity directions. However, different causes of anisotropy have also to be considered to explain the wide range of the splitting pattern observed in the western Mediterranean region. Many geophysical observations such as the low Pn velocity, lower lithospheric Q values, higher heat flow and the presence of high conductive features support the mantle flow in the western Mediterranean, which may contribute and even modify the splitting pattern beneath the studied region. 展开更多
