The influence of hygrothermal effects on the buckling and postbuckling of composite laminated cylindrical shells subjected to axial compression is investigated using a micro-to-macro-mechanical analytical model. The material properties of the composite are affected hy the variation of temperature and moisture, and are hosed on a micromechanical model of a laminate. The governing equations are based on the classical laminated shell theory, and including hygrothermal effects. The nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the shell were both taken into account. A boundary layer theory of shell buckling was extended to the case of laminated cylindrical shells under hygrothermal environments, and a singular peturbation technique was employed to determine buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The numerical illustrations concern the postbuckling behavior of perfect and imperfect, cross-ply laminated cylindrical shells under different sets of environmental conditions. The influences played by temperature rise, the degree of moisture concentration, fiber volume fraction, shell geometric parameter, total number of plies, stacking sequences and initial geometric imperfections are studied. 展开更多

A new optimization method for the optimization of stacking of composite glass fiber laminates is developed. The fiber orientation and angle of the layers of the cylindrical shells are sought considering the buckling load. The proposed optimization algorithm applies both finite element analysis and the mode-pursuing sampling (MPS)method. The algorithms suggest the optimal stacking sequence for achieving the maximal buckling load. The procedure is implemented by integrating ANSYS and MATLAB. The stacking sequence designing for the symmetric angle-ply three-layered and five-layered composite cylinder shells is presented to illustrate the optimization process, respectively. Compared with the genetic algorithms, the proposed optimization method is much faster and efficient for composite staking sequence plan. 展开更多

With the stability analysis of hyperbolic cooling tower shells with ring-stiffeners. our paper proposes the linear pre-buckling consistent theory. The numerical result shows that this linear analysis method is very effective and practical in engineering, for its precision of compulation is up to the level of the nonlinear analysis when it is used for the study of critical loads of the hyperbolic cooling tower which is mainly governed by wind pressure and for the study of the effect of some oilier factors concerned in design on the buckling of shells. Based on that, we have obtained a scries of conclusions whicii will greatly benefits the engineering design when discussing the effect on the critical windloading of the shell which is caused by the following factors such as the position of rings, the number of rings and the dead weight. 展开更多

Thermal buckling behavior of cylindrical shell made of functionally graded material(FGM) is studied. The material constituents are composed of ceramic and metal. The material properties across the shell thickness are assumed to be graded according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction rule of mixtures. Based on the Donnell shell theory, a system of dimensionless partial differential equations of buckling in terms of displacement components is derived. The method of separation of variables is used to transform the governing equations to ordinary differential equations(ODEs). A shooting method is used to search for the numerical solutions of the differential equations under two types of boundary conditions. Effects of the power law index, the dimensionless geometrical parameters, and the temperature ratio on the critical buckling temperature are discussed in detail. 展开更多

This paper is concerned with a numerical solution of hyperbolic cooling tower shell, a class of full nonlinear problems in solid mechanics of considerable interest in engineering applications. In this analysis, the post-buckling analysis of cooling tower shell with discrete fixed support and under the action of wind loads and dead load is studied. The influences of ring-stiffener on instability load are also discussed. In addition, a new solution procedure for nonlinear problems which is the combination of load increment iteration with modified R-C are-length method is suggested. Finally, some conclusions having important significance for practice engineering are given. 展开更多

A compressive postbuckling analysis is presented for a laminated cylinderical panel with piezoelectric actuators subjected to the combined action of mechanical, electrical and thermal loads. The temperature field considered is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the panel surface and through the panel thickness and the electric field is assumed to be the transverse component E_Z only. The material properties are assumed to be independent of the temperature and the electric field. The governing equations are based on the classical shell theory with von Krmn-Donnell-type of kinematic nonlinearity. The nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the panel are both taken into account. The deformation and snap-through behaviour of a thin-walled elastic spherical shell statically compressed on a flat surface or impacted against a fiat surface are studied the- oretically and numerically in order to estimate the influence of the dynamic effects on the response. A table tennis ball is considered as an example of a thin-walled elastic shell. It is shown that the increase of the impact velocity leads to a variation of the deformed shape thus resulting in larger de- formation energy. The increase of the contact force is caused by both the increased contribution of the inertia forces and contribution of the increased deformation energy. The contact force resulted from deformation/inertia of the ball and the shape of the deformed region are calcu- lated by the proposed theoretical models and compared with the results from both the finite element analysis and some previously obtained experimental data. Good agreement is demonstrated. 展开更多

The longitudinal compressive buckling of long and thin-walled cylinders in yield region is analyzed with the incremental and finite forms of the endochronic constitutive equation, respectively. The relations between the critical stress σ_(cr)versus the ratio of R (the radius) versus h (the thickness of the wall) are derived. The critical stress of the thin-walled cylinders made of abuminum alloys AMГ and 1T are analyzed and compared with the experimental data and the analytical results based on traditional theory of plasticity. It is seen that. except that the σ_(cr) of the cylinders made of 1Tpredicted by the finite form of the endochronic theory seems a little more conservative than that by traditional deformation theory of plasticity, in most cases, both forms of the endochornic constitutive equation provide more satisfactory results. 展开更多

A knock-down factor is commonly used to take into account the obvious decline of the buckling load in a cylindrical shell caused by the inevitable imperfections. In 1968, NASA guideline SP-8007 gave knock-down factors which rely on a lower-bound curve taken from experimental data. Recent research has indicated that the NASA knock-down factors are inclined to produce very conservative estimations for the buckling load of imperfect shells, due to the limitations of the computational power and the experimental skills available five decades ago. A novel knock-down factor is proposed composed of two parts for the metallic stiffened cylinders. A deterministic study is applied to achieve the first part of the knock-down factor considering the measured geometric imperfection, the other types of imperfections are considered in the second part using a stochastic analysis. A smeared model is used to achieve the implementation of the measured geometric imperfection for the stiffened cylinder. This new robust and less conservative design for the stiffened cylinders is validated by using test results. 展开更多
