The Procedure of an International Student Studying Abroad:A Case Study

As it is examined and concluded by many researchers,studying abroad has been common when students are trying to receive higher quality education.Cross-cultural adjustment is also regarded as a compulsory term to consider,and the way to get involved in the host culture has also been deeply investigated in this procedure.Therefore,this paper aims at identifying the factors that cause cultural barriers,as well as finding solutions to cope with them.In this study,a case study research method is employed and the result will be beneficial to support future research in similar fields.

Research on the Current Situation of China’s Higher Education Students Studying Abroad in the Context of Higher Education Internationalization

In the context of education internationalization,the internationalization of higher education has become a major trend in the field of education in most countries,with international student education as the core.This phenomenon promotes cultural exchanges and integration among countries as well as higher education reform,which is of great significance in enhancing the international influence of higher education in each country.However,there are also some challenges faced by higher education students when studying abroad.The article digs into the origin and history of studying abroad,analyzes the current situation and reasons for higher education students in China to study abroad,discusses the opportunities and challenges faced by higher education students in China when studying abroad,and analyzes the trend of studying abroad in China.

Short-term Outcomes of Laparoscopic vs.Open Hepatectomy for Primary Hepatocellular Carcinoma:A Prospective Comparative Study

Laparoscopic hepatectomy(LH)is a newly developed technique associated with advantages as open surgery,but the study on outcome of liver function recovery was scarce.This preliminary report was aimed to comparatively assess the short?term outcomes between LH and open hepatectomy(OH)for primary hepatocellular carcinoma(PHC).This study retrospectively analyzed the demographic data and short-term outcomes of 81 patients who underwent LH or OH for the primary treatment of PHC between Oct.2017 and May 2018 at Union Hospital,Tongji Medical College,Huazhong University of Science and Technology(China).A total of 81 PHC patients who received major liver resection were enrolled.There were 38(47%)patients in the LH group and 43(53%)patients in the OH group.The operative time was significantly longer(373.53±173.38 vs.225.43±55.08,P<0.01),and hospital stay(17.34±5.93 vs.21.70±6.89,P=0.003),exhaust time(2.32±0.62 vs.3.07±0.59,P<0.01)and defecation time(2.92±0.78 vs.3.63±0.58,P<0.01)were significantly shorter in LH group than in OH group.The recovery of liver function was significantly faster in LH group,including higher serum albumin(P=0.002),higher ratio of albumin/globulin(P=0.029)and lower direct bilirubin(P=0.001)than in OH group.It is suggested that LH can serve as a fast recovery and cheap surgical procedure in the treatment of PHC,which is safe and feasible.

Fostering Global Citizens Through Study Abroad―A Case Study

In today’s increasingly globalized world,study abroad programs are receiving unprecedented attention as a significant part of international education.The mission of Soka University of America(SUA)is in line with the trend of producing U.S.graduates in higher education who demonstrate intercultural and international competence.SUA has joined the academic world in this growing area of interest and requires all its students to study abroad.Learning from other institutions and exploring its own path,SUA has developed a comprehensive study abroad program that seamlessly integrated in the liberal arts curricular of the university,which positively affected foreign language learning,improved students’abilities to function as global citizens,and opened various opportunities worldwide for the students.To insure students’study abroad experiences fruitful,the following aspects need to be considered:1.systematic institutional support;2.designated staff to work on study abroad affairs;3.advising students about the courses to take while abroad;4.students need support from the entire home institution;and 5.connect study abroad with a given institution’s broader goals.

A Case Study of Intercultural Interventions for Chinese University Students During Study Abroad Program in the University of Minnesota

In 21st Century, Chinese and American universities are experiencing great development in the number of students studying abroad. This research adopts the method of natural investigation, selecting Chinese student samples during study abroad program in the University of Minnesota to complete the designed questionnaires to examine the intercultural interventions taken before, during and after this type of study abroad in Chinese universities. Also, after students complete the questionnaires, email communication is made to analyze the reasons for their answers to the questionnaires. The questionnaire results and email communication show that there is a great gap in the practice of intercultural interventions in study abroad programs between Chinese universities and students expectations. It is time for Chinese universities to design appropriate intercultural interventions in order to maximize Chinese university students＇ intercultural development during study abroad. These intercultural interventions should be run consistently to cover the phrases of pre-departure, during and after the study abroad program. Also, more dynamic and interactive intercultural interventions rather than knowledge-based intercultural instructions or guidance should be the focus for intercultural interventions.

Effect of Short-Term Exposure to Mercuric Chloride on the Air-Breathing Catfish,Heteropneustes fossilis──Ⅰ.Light Microscopic Study of the Gill

Histopathological effects of sublethal (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 ppm) and lethal (0.5, 1.0 ppm)solutions of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) have been studied on the gills of the air breathing catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis at the intervals ranging from 6h to 15 days. Thickening of the epithelium, swelling and hyperplasia of the mucous cells, fusion of secondary lamellae, formation of interlamellar bridge and deposition of mucous over the entire surface are some noteworthy features of mercury poisoning in sublethal concentrations. Acute pathological manifestations are formation of subepithelial space, sloughing of the epithelial layer, hemorrhage and hypertrophy of the mucous cells. English as Foreign Language(EFL)Teachers’Efficacy and Positive Achievement Emotions:Relations to Instructional Changes After Attending a Study Abroad Program

Due to government policy,the number of study abroad professional de­velopment program for EFL teachers increased greatly in China during recent years.Study abroad program aims to help EFL teachers improve their knowledge and teaching practices,which requires them to make ad­justments to their traditional teaching styles accordingly.Hence,teachers may experience strong emotional reactions when they are faced with dif­ferent modes of teaching methods.From the perspective of“emotion”,this study used control-value theory of achievement emotions as the theoretical framework to examine the relationship between teacher efficacy,positive achievement emotions,and instructional changes among 386 Chinese EFL teachers who attended study abroad programs.Purposive sampling was used in data collection.Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equa­tion Model(SEM).The results showed that teacher efficacy correlated pos­itively with positive achievement emotions(enjoyment,hope,and pride)and instructional changes.Positive achievement emotions mediated the relationship between teacher efficacy and instructional changes.Findings showed the impact of teacher efficacy and positive achievement emotions on changes in teachers’thinking and instructional practices.Based on the findings and limitations of this study,implications on teacher education and professional development program,directions and suggestions for future studies are discussed.

A Study on Influence of Students'Intercultural Communication Competence in the Application-oriented University through Short-term Overseas Study Tours

Short-term overseas study tours, as a new type of cross-cultural autonomy education in the era of globalization, aims to help students improve their intercultural communication competence through tourism and cultural learning. Many studies' subjects are concentrated on the higher learning institutions. However, few of them are concerned about application-oriented university students' ICC. So the behavior and role of students' ICC in the overseas study tours in 2016 and 2017 in one of the application-oriented universities in Zhejiang province becomes the main focus. It exams from three aspects: intercultural attitudes, knowledge and behaviors. Basically, students benefit a lot from study tours, especially in the aspect of practical communication, among which, they change from shy, inexperienced learners to be brave, confident, and skilled in the tours. Also, considering the problems of host school are existed, the suggestions proposed by participants that practical courses of destination countries had better be arranged for students to understand and adapt to it beforehand. Besides, more communication and interactions between students and teachers should be increased to create a more active and relaxed classroom atmosphere, which contribute to mobilize students' initiative and enthusiasm to better become a complementary influence to promote students' ICC.

Flow Structure and Short-Term Riverbed Evolution in Curved Flumes

River bending is the major effect responsible for bed topography and bank changes.In this study,fluid velocity(measured by a three-dimensional Doppler advanced point current meter)and bed topographical data have been collected in 40 sections of an experimental model.The whole flume was composed of an organic glass bend,upstream and downstream water tanks,two transition straight sections,a circulation pump,and a connection pipeline.Each section has been found to be characterized by a primary circulation and a small reverse circulation,with some sections even presenting three more or more circulation structures.The minimum circulation intensity has been detected in proximity to the top of the curved channel,while a region with small longitudinal velocity has been observed near the concave bank of each bend,corresponding to the flat bed formed after a short period of scouring.The maximum sediment deposition and scour depth in the presence of a uniform distribution of living flexible vegetation within 10 cm of the flume wall have been found to be smaller than those observed in the tests conducted without vegetation.

Experiences of Chinese nurses studying for master’s degree in the UK: a qualitative study

Objective:To explore experiences of Chinese nurses who study for Master of Science in Professional Practice(health care)in the United Kingdom.Methods:A qualitative approach was applied,consisting of semi-structured telephone interviews(n=8).The Colaizzi seven-step framework analysis method was used to extract themes.Results:The themes that emerged are as follows:(1)gains from studying overseas,(2)difficulties during studying,and(3)impacts of learning experience on work.The gains for nurses studying overseas include the improvement of scientific research capabilities,reconstruction of critical thinking,and development of reflection ability.Difficulties while studying mainly include language barrier,strict assessment,and boring life.Conclusions:The education of nursing postgraduate attaches impor tance to the cultivation of thinking.Nurses are very interested in nursing research including qualitative and quantitative methods.Nurses encountered language barriers in their study and life even though they knew a cer tain level of English.

Opportunities and Challenges for Global Student Mobility： A Study on Undergraduates＇ Experiences

This paper examines the study abroad experiences of undergraduates, explores the students＇ values and perspectives on being global citizens, and expresses the way they think of themselves as members of the broader world community. The research was conducted by interviewing students who had experiences studying abroad. It aims to open a debate about the meanings and understandings of global student mobility which is based on the opinions and values of college students who had either long or short-term study abroad experiences. The study shows that students have grasped the transformation of globalization and are concerned with their competitiveness in the global stage. They pointed out that their higher education courses are lacking in providing enough opportunities for students to encounter the broader world. Also, students often cope with culture shock issues such as the way they interact with classmates, the attitude of contributing toward society, and the barrier to communicate using local languages. Proposed changes can start with professors, for example, by bringing the reality of other cultures into the students＇ learning process, by showing the common values and competencies of modern college students, and by contributing to critical thinking.

变局与应对:留学新态势下研究生拔尖创新人才自主培养研究

拔尖创新人才培养是教育系统的重要功能,也是我国的一个重大教育政策目标。高等教育系统尤其是研究生教育系统在拔尖创新人才的培养中发挥着不可或缺的作用。自改革开放以来,我国一方面坚持独立培养高层次人才,另一方面采取鼓励留学的政策,从而在研究生拔尖创新人才的培养中形成了本土与留学的二元路径。但是,随着国际地缘政治的变化以及我国自主培养能力的增强,留学培养模式正在发生深刻变化。疫情后我国顶尖高校出国读研比例呈明显下降趋势,同时一些无法去美国留学读研的学生转而到英国、新加坡等国家留学。在此背景下,我国应一方面抓住优秀生源供给增加的历史机遇,持续提高研究生拔尖创新人才自主培养的能力,另一方面继续坚持教育对外开放,进一步促进留学目的国的多元化,以降低留学趋势变化带来的风险。
