Review and update on the management of triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries in professional athletes

Triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries are common in amateur and professional sports.These injuries are mainly caused by acute or chronic repetitive axial loads on the wrist,particularly on the ulnar side and in association with rotations or radial/ulnar deviations.In order to treat professional athletes,a detailed specific knowledge of the pathology is needed.Moreover,the clinician should fully understand the specific and unique environment and needs of the athletes,their priorities and goals,the type of sport,the time of the season,and the position played.An early diagnosis and appropriate management with the quickest possible recovery time are the uppermost goals for both the athlete and the surgeon.A compromise between conservative vs surgical indications,athletes’needs and expectations,and financial implications should be achieved.Arthroscopic procedures should be timely planned when indicated as they could allow early diagnosis and treatment at the same time.Conservative measures are often used as first line treatment when possible.Peripheral lesions are treated by arthroscopic repair,whilst central lesions are treated by arthroscopic debridement.Further procedures(such as the Wafer procedure,ulnar osteotomies,etc.)have specific indications and great implications with regard to rehabilitation.

The Second China Standardization Conference was held in Quzhou city,Zhejiang province,on May 22-23,2024,which was hosted by China Association for Standardization(CAS).The conference was presided over by Zhang Xiuchun,Secretary General of CAS,and addressed by Xu Zhangyan,Mayor of Quzhou,and Li Yaowu,Deputy Secretary-General of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government,and Yu Xinli,President of CAS.The conference was attended by more than 1,300 participants on site including renowned experts and scholars on standardization,leaders of research institutes,heads of standards technical management,and representatives of enterprises at home and abroad,and watched by over 20,000 audiences on line.

A Looped Functional Method to Design State Feedback Controllers for Lurie Networked Control Systems

Dear Editor,This letter deals with the stabilization of Lurie networked control systems with network-induced delays(NID).By constructing a twosided looped Lyapunov functional,a sufficient condition is derived to ensure the absolute stability of the resultant closed-loop system under a state feedback controller.Then,based on this condition,a cone complementary linearisation(CCL)iterative algorithm is presented to design state feedback controller.It is shown via a numerical example that the proposed method can deliver less conservative results as well as fewer iterations if compared with existing ones.

Left-sided gallbladder:A rare biliary tree anomaly

To the Editor:Hepatobiliary anatomical variations may increase the complexity of surgery with a relevant risk of iatrogenic lesions.Left-sided gallbladder(LSG)is a rare and little known condition whereby the viscus is located on the visceral surface of the left lobe of the liver and is often discovered unexpectedly during surgery.The position of the gallbladder over the liver pedicle and the simultaneous presence of variations in the liver vascularization are potentially associated to a challenging surgical dissection and consequently to an increased risk of morbidity.Despite open approach remains an option in more complex procedures,cholecystectomy is usually performed with a minimally invasive technique,which is generally safe even in the rare case of an LSG,as long as a high level of awereness of anatomical variations and a careful surgical dissection are pursued.

China and Cameroon have a strong and blooming relationship.The proof can be found in the magnificent$123-million memorandum of understanding(MoU)that was signed on 28 August 2023.The Export-Import Bank of China and Cameroon Water Utilities Corp.(CAMWATER),the government agency in charge of providing drinking water,signed the deal.Provision of drinking water to nine towns in Cameroon is the centrepiece of this MoU.Gaston Eloundou Essomba,minister of water and energy of Cameroon,presided over the ceremonial event with Blaise Moussa,managing director of CAMWATER.The project’s principal contractor,Chinese firm CGCOC,and CAMWATER worked closely to coordinate the project between China and Cameroon.Moussa is,however,ultimately responsible for bringing this huge project to a successful finish.

Dear Editor,Although the World Health Organization(WHO)has declared an end to the global emergency for coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)[1],the clinical burden of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease(SARS-CoV-2)has not yet subsided[2,3],especially after the emergence of new variants such as EG.5 and BA.2.86,whose genetic leap is so large that it may contribute to increase the number of new COVID-19 cases,hospitalizations,and deaths[3].Some physical preventive measures,such as mask-wearing,hand hygiene,and isolation of positive cases,play an important role.However,widespread vaccination remains the cornerstone to contain the spread of the virus and mitigate the potential harm to human health.

Robust H-infinity integral sliding mode control for a class of uncertain switched nonlinear systems

This paper develops a new method to deal with the robust H-infinity control problem for a class of uncertain switched nonlinear systems by using integral sliding mode control.A robust H-infinity integral sliding surface is constructed such that the sliding mode is robust stable with a prescribed disturbance attenuation level γ for a class of switching signals with average dwell time.Furthermore,variable structure controllers are designed to maintain the state of switched system on the sliding surface from the initial time.A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
