The Second China-Singapore Youth Development Forum Held in Singapore

On April 12,the National Youth Council of Singapore and the All-China Youth Federation jointly hosted the Second China-Singapore Youth Development Forum in Singapore.Themed"Youth Leadership and Sustainable Development",this forum was one of the major events of the China-Singapore Youth Leaders Exchange Camp.Ye Cong,Vice-Chairman of the All-China Youth Federation,and David Chua,Executive President of the National Youth Council of Singapore,attended the forum and delivered a speech respectively.Zhu Jing,Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Singapore,and nearly 100 Chinese and Singaporean youth representatives from various fields attended the forum.

Descriptions of Three New Species of Orthogonius Macleay (Coleoptera, Caraboidea, Orthogoniini) from Singapore and Southern Thailand

Three new species of Orthogonius Macleay (Coleoptera, Caraboidea) from Malaya Peninsula are described and illustrated in the present papr: O. solidicornis, sp. nov. (from Singapore), O. morvani, sp. nov. and O. thaicus, sp. nov. (from Thailand).

仿生态条件下星洲红鱼(Singapore red tilapia)和奥尼罗非鱼(Oreochromis niloticus)生长和肌肉营养特性的比较研究

为比较星洲红鱼(Singapore red tilapia)和奥尼罗非鱼(Oreochromis niloticus)的生长和肌肉营养特性,实验利用两种鱼的不同体色将其混养在同一池塘中,在相同的环境条件和养殖管理下研究其生长特性,并分析肌肉营养成分。结果表明:两种罗非鱼生长在前60 d无差异,60 d后星洲红鱼的体长、体质量日增长和特定生长率均大于奥尼罗非鱼,且差异显著(P<0.05)。据此得到了星洲红鱼和奥尼罗非鱼的体长(L)、体质量(W)生长与养殖天数(d)的回归方程。星洲红鱼含肉率高于奥尼罗非鱼9.65%(P<0.05),肌肉水分高于奥尼罗非鱼,蛋白质、粗脂肪和灰分含量均低于奥尼罗非鱼,其中脂肪含量差异显著(P<0.05),其他不显著。两种罗非鱼肌肉的氨基酸组成全面,氨基酸组成均符合FAO/WHO的理想模式,除精氨酸含量有差异外,其他氨基酸含量稍有差异但不显著。星洲红鱼和奥尼罗非鱼肌肉EAA/TAA、EAA/NEAA、DAA/TAA和EAAI分别为41.04%和40.95%,70.00%和69.34%,40.71%和39.08%,67.46%和67.08%,差异不显著。星洲红鱼、奥尼罗非鱼肌肉∑SFA和∑UFA分别为28.03%和28.60%,63.87%和61.38%,各脂肪酸含量除C14:0和C18:2外,其他含量差异不显著。研究表明,星洲红鱼和奥尼罗非鱼生长快、营养丰富、食用价值高,是优质淡水鱼类养殖品种,其中星洲红鱼含肉率高,生长快,养殖效益明显。

A Research of Language Planning in Singapore and Its Implications for China from the Ecological Perspective

Language planning plays a very important role in this world of globalization and multilingualism.With globalization,English has become a lingua franca for the whole world,whereas there seems to be an urgent need to preserve and protect local languages and cultures.How to linguistically achieve the aim of unity in diversity is of great significance to both linguists and soci?olinguists.This article intends to explore how to create a harmonious language ecology.From the perspective of language ecolo?gy,the article firstly discusses such issues as language planning and Language Ecology.It is then dedicated to the study of language planning and policy in Singapore by giving an account of the development of language policy in Singapore,how various languag?es coexist harmoniously,its bilingual policy,and illustrating how multilingualism and multiculturalism have been successfully prac?ticed in Singapore.Finally,some implications for language planning in China in dealing with the protection of minority languag?es,and solutions to intractable language problems in the execution of One Belt One Road policy are provided.

A Critical Review on Singapore English

A critical review is given on Singapore English. The historical introduction of the language provides readers a longitu dinal insight into the development of this special variety. Then, the language features of Colloquial Singapore English and Stan dard Singapore English are discussed, and a comparison of the use of Singapore and standard British English is made to show the differences in grammatical and lexical features of these two varieties of English.

The experience of transition from nursing students to newly graduated registered nurses in Singapore

Objectives:To investigate the experience of newly graduated registered nurses(NGRNs)in Singapore following their initial 6-12 months of transition from nursing student to registered nurse.Methods:This mixed-methods study consisted of two phases.In the first phase,data were collected via the administration of the online survey to 30 NGRNs.The questionnaire contained 42 items of the fourpoint Likert scale survey.In the second phase,a focus group interview was conducted with 5 NGRNs to gather complementary information regarding the major findings from the first phase.Results:The survey revealed despite most NGRNs(80%)in this study expressed overall satisfied with their transition,the item score was(2.97±0.61)out of 4,the majority(83.3%)also perceived their transition to professional practice being stressful,the item score was(3.07±0.74)out of 4.Three themes emerged from the interview,'personal transition experience','professional transition experience',and'organizational transition experience',which are entwined to construct overall NGRNs'transition experiences.Conclusions:This study reaffirms the theory-practice gap phenomenon.This signifies the need for closer collaboration between educational,healthcare industry and regulatory stakeholders to examine and address factors that influence their transition experience to better support them for workforce readiness.

GIS Based FLMP Solving in Densely Populated City Areas: a Case Study in Singapore

With continual population growth in the densely populated cities,e.g.,Singapore,traffic congestion is the main transportation problem.As such,Public Transport is deemed as the most sustainable mode of transport.However,pubic transport is often plagued with the First and Last Mile Problem(FLMP),reducing its appeal especially in the densely populated city areas.The FLMP leads to a wide range of complications,in particular,human congestion in public transport.In this research,after a comprehensive discussion of FLMP problem in densely populated city areas,a case study in Singapore,i.e.,the Kent Ridge Campus of National University of Singapore(KRC-NUS),has been conducted based on the survey and spatio-temporal analyses.In addition to the investigation of FLMP status in the case study area,a new campus shuttle bus route from an alternative MRT station(Haw Par Villa Station)has also been proposed based on the Tabu Search to alleviate the human congestion and current FLMP status for KRC-NUS.This research not only has successfully addressed the FLMP in the case study area,but also can be a good reference for other areas in densely populated cities to help mitigate FLMPs.

BUILDING INTEGRATED AGRICULTURE Utilising Rooftops for Sustainable Food Crop Cultivation in Singapore

Burgeoning population and rapid urbanisation have contributed to two challenges facing cities today:food security and an increasing carbon footprint due to food imports.This paper examines the viability of rooftop farming in urban centres in Asia.A context-specific exploration—sited in Singapore—looks at the challenges of building integrated agriculture.Findings suggest that Singapore’s public housing estates are suitable for rooftop farming.Implemented nationwide,such a scheme could result in a 700%increase in domestic vegetable production,satisfying domestic demand by 35.5%.Reducing food imports would also decrease Singapore’s carbon footprint by 9,052 tonnes of emissions annually.

An economic analysis of varicella immunization in the Singapore military

Background:Varicella outbreaks occur frequently in closed environments such as those of militaries.This paper compares the economic outcomes of varicella vaccination in enlisted servicemen without prior reported varicella infection or vaccination.Methods:We analyzed the economic outcomes of a varicella vaccination program on all enlisted servicemen without prior reported varicella infection or vaccination in the Singapore Armed Forces(SAF) between December 11,2010–December 20,2013,compared with the previous program of varicella vaccination only for selected personnel between December 1,2007–December 10,2010.Results:In the at-risk population of all active SAF servicemen,the program of varicella vaccination for all servicemen without prior reported varicella infection or vaccination upon enlistment would save 72.0 work days per 1000(95% CI:61.2-82.9),valued at SG$6,544 per 1000(95% CI:6,524-6,564),i.e.,costing SG$91.5 per work day saved(95% CI:78.7-107.3).This also results in a reduction of 2.7 varicella cases per 1000 and 5.43 outbreaks per 10000,or a total savings of SG$1,695 per 1000(95% CI:–2,730-6,834),taking into account the cost of work days lost over a three-year period,compared with the previous regime of vaccinations only for selected individuals.Conclusion:The varicella vaccination strategy targeting all enlisted servicemen without prior reported varicella infection or vaccination is able to prevent varicella infections and outbreaks,thus reducing absenteeism and days lost.

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive rates in invasive lobular breast carcinoma: The Singapore experience

BACKGROUND Invasive lobular carcinomas(ILC)form 5%-10%of breast cancer and rarely show overexpression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER2).AIM To describe the prevalence and prognostic factors of HER2 positive(HER2+)ILC in an Asian population.METHODS A retrospective review of patients with ILC seen between January 1985 and March 2018 at various SingHealth medical institutions was conducted.Demographic and clinical data were collected from medical records.We examined clinicopathological characteristics and survival in relation to HER2 status.RESULTS A total of 864 patients were included.Prevalence of HER2 positivity was 10.1%(87 patients).Compared with HER2 negative(HER2-)ILC,HER2+ILC was associated with a higher proportion of estrogen receptor negative(24.4%vs 5.9%,P<0.001),progesterone receptor negative(PR-)(40.2%vs 24%,P=0.002)and grade 3 tumours(Grade 3,29.0%vs 10.2%,P<0.001).Overall survival rate was poorer in patients with HER2+compared to HER2-ILC(56.7%vs 72.9%alive at 10 years;hazard ratio 1.87,95%confidence interval:1.21-2.90,P=0.004).Based on multivariate analysis,negative prognostic factors for overall survival included HER2 positivity,PR negativity,older age,Indian ethnicity and higher tumour stage.CONCLUSION Prevalence of HER2+ILC was 10.1%.HER2+ILC was more likely to have poorer prognostic features such as estrogen receptor negative,PR-and higher tumour grade,and have a poorer survival.

Primary care physicians'knowledge,attitude and perception towards homosexuality in Singapore

Aims:This study aim to gain insights into attitudes,acceptance and knowledge levels among family physicians toward homosexual people,which are important as they may affect care among this at-risk group.Methods:An anonymized self-administered questionnaire in English was posted with the assistance of the College of Family Physicians Singapore in February 2015 to its 1529 members with self-addressed,pre-stamped envelopes for replies.The questionnaire included demographic questions such as age group,gender,religion,ethnicity,marital status and place of practice.Questions and scales that measured attitude,acceptance,knowledge and perception of colleagues who are homosexual were also included in the questionnaire.Results:451 responses(29.5%)were obtained,of which 441 were valid(28.84%).About 52.8%of participants were found to have negative,8.9%neutral and 38.3%positive attitudes toward homosexuality.Most(75.6%)were accepting of homosexuals,with 9.3%neutral and 15.1%not accepting.Knowledge levels were poor,with a mean score of 6.9 out of a maximum of 13.A strong correlation was found between the attitudes towards lesbians and gay men(ATLG)and acceptance of homosexuals scales(r=0.69,P<0.001),with moderate correlations between acceptance and knowledge(r=0.54,P<0.001)and ATLG and Knowledge(r=0.54,P<0.001).Conclusion:Despite majority of family physicians having negative attitudes towards homosexuality,most are able to accept homosexuality.With better education in sexual orientation in the medical educational curriculum,the increase in knowledge will lead to better care for people with homosexuality.
