This paper studies the single trial extraction of visual evoked potential by combining EMD and wavelet threshold filter. Experimental results showed that the EMD based method can separate the noise out of the event related potentials (ERPs) and effectively extract the weak ERPs in strong background noise, which manifested as the waveform characteristics and root mean square error (RMSE).展开更多

In the current study, we investigated the six discriminating components on a single-trial level to clarify whether the amplitude difference between experimental conditions results from a difference in the real variability of single-trial amplitudes or from latency jitter across trials. It is found that there were consistent amplitude differences in the single-trial P1, N170, VPP, N3, and P3 components, demonstrating that a substantial proportion of the average amplitude differences can be explained by the pure variability in amplitudes on a single-trial basis between experimental conditions. These single-trial results verified the three-stage scheme of facial expression processing beyond multitrial ERP averaging, and showed the three processing stages of "fear popup", "emotional/unemotional discrimination", and "complete separation" based on the single-trial ERP dynamics.展开更多

The clinical applications illustrate the encouraging performance of the method. The number of trials needed is reduced to 3, but the estimated VEP complex is clearer than that obtained by conventional ensemble averaging with 50 trials. By analyzing the time course and spatial pattern of the independent components (ICs) of the multi channel PVEP, one component is found to be reasonably related to the P100 peak.展开更多
