Lost,Exile and Return-An Analysis of Sheona’s Identity Reconstruction in“Sisters”from the Perspective of Spatial Theory

“Sisters”is the first novel in Irish-American author Colum McCann’s short story collection-Fishing the Sloe-Black River,which tells the story of Sheona’s search for her identity between Ireland and the United States.Colum McCann is skilled in writing about the spiritual dilemmas and identity search of ethnic minorities living in a foreign land.Employing the space theory and Sheona’s perspective,this paper examines her identity loss in Ireland’s patriarchal system,her migration to the US for identity pursuit,and her subsequent transnational journey between the two nations to reconstruct her identity amidst physical and mental trauma.

Modeling,Analysis and Validation of Friendship Paradox in Evolving Networks

Friendship paradox states that individuals are likely to have fewer friends than their friends do,on average.Despite of its wide existence and appealing applications in real social networks,the mathematical understanding of friendship paradox is very limited.Only few works provide theoretical evidence of single-step and multi-step friendship paradoxes,given that the neighbors of interest are onehop and multi-hop away from the target node.However,they consider non-evolving networks,as opposed to the topology of real social networks that are constantly growing over time.We are thus motivated to present a first look into friendship paradox in evolving networks,where newly added nodes preferentially attach themselves to those with higher degrees.Our analytical verification of both single-step and multistep friendship paradoxes in evolving networks,along with comparison to the non-evolving counterparts,discloses that“friendship paradox is even more paradoxical in evolving networks”,primarily from three aspects:1)we demonstrate a strengthened effect of single-step friendship paradox in evolving networks,with a larger probability(more than 0.8)of a random node’s neighbors having higher average degree than the random node itself;2)we unravel higher effectiveness of multi-step friendship paradox in seeking for influential nodes in evolving networks,as the rate of reaching the max degree node can be improved by a factor of at least Θ(t^(2/3))with t being the network size;3)we empirically verify our findings through both synthetic and real datasets,which suggest high agreements of results and consolidate the reasonability of evolving model for real social networks.

The role of drinking in new and existing friendships across high school settings

We use 9 Add Health high schools with longitudinal network data to assess whether adolescent drinkers choose friends who drink, prefer friends whose friends drink, if selection differs between new and existing friendships, and between schools. Utilizing dynamic social network models that control for friend influences on individual alcohol use, the results show that drinkers do not strongly prefer friends who drink. Instead, they favor close friends whose friends’ drink, suggesting that alcohol matters for selection on the social groups and environments that friends connect each other to. The role of alcohol use differs by whether friendships are new or existing, however, with bridging connections being less stable. Moreover, selection processes, and the implications of alcohol use for friendship, vary in important ways between schools.

Is there a connection between synthetic bone grafts and sisters chromatide exchange?

Background: In oral and maxillofacial surgery, synthetic bone grafts are most widely used as bone substitutes, due to the limited sources of autologous bone. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of three different synthetic bone grafts (Cerasorb, Fortoss and Perioglass) on sisters chromatide exchanges (SCEs) in peripheral lymphocytes. Materials and Methods: Peripheral blood samples taken from 68 patients (45 females and 23 males), who underwent oral surgery procedures, such as apical resection, cyst enucleation or periodontal curretage, were obtained for SCE a day before and two months after the surgeries. A control group included 30 patients, while the study group was made of the patients who underwent bone grafting with Cerasorb? (11 patients), Fortoss? VITAL (10 patients) or Perioglass? (17 patients). Results: Comparing with the results of the study group before and after the treatment, it was concluded that the results were statistically significant (p = 0.001). In the Perioglass? subgroup, a greater statistical significance (p = 0.003) was noted, than that in either the Cerasorb? (p = 0.620) or Fortoss? (p = 0.210) subgroups, in which there was no statistical significance. Conclusions: Although further investigations may be necessary, our results suggest that the synthetic bone grafts might have an influence on SCE in peripheral lymphocytes.

Before the Victorian era,it was rare for women to be authors and writers to fix the protagonists of their works as female characters.However,in the 19^(th)century,there was a rapid increase of women writers and emphasis on feminist consciousness.Among all the works of women writers,Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights which were written by the Bronte sisters were distinctive.The Bronte sisters conveyed their feminist consciousness and described the society in their works.Both works emphasized romantic relationships as the narrative thread.By shaping the female characters in their works as self-reliant women who fought for equivalence and freedom in the era where male chauvinism occupied leadership roles,the Bronte sisters conveyed their eagerness for freedom,equality,and their feminist consciousness.This paper combines features of the Victorian era and the Bronte sisters’life experiences to analyze feminist consciousness in these two works and make comparisons between them.

右侧结肠癌伴Sister Mary Joseph’s结节及腹股沟淋巴结转移——一例报告及文献综述(英文)

Sister Mary Joseph’s结节(Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule,SMJN)是指腹腔内恶性肿瘤导致的脐部转移性结节,1949年由Hamilton Bailey命名以纪念St.Mary’s Hospital的护士Sister Joseph。SMJN并不多见,但个案报道屡屡见诸文献。这种脐部转移可以与腹腔内肿瘤同时出现或异时出现,是预后极差的表现。SMJN最常见原发肿瘤为胃癌及卵巢癌,结肠癌特别是右侧结肠癌引起的SMJN极其罕见。另外右侧结肠癌转移至腹股沟淋巴结未见文献报道。本文报道一例右侧结肠癌同时伴有SMJN及腹股沟淋巴结转移,并对相关文献进行综述。

基于设计特征的FRIENDSHIP船型参数化方法及实现

船型设计是船舶总体设计中一项极其复杂且又重要的内容,船舶的结构设计、性能计算、总布置等都要以船型为依据,因此,如何实现船型参数化设计尤为重要。FRIENDSHIP系统为船型设计提供了基于Feature特征和仿真驱动设计的参数化方法和实现机制。在对船型参数化基本理论———特征参数、特征曲线和曲面生成等进行详细阐述的基础上,以某型船艉部裸船体为例,具体阐述了船型参数化的实现流程,以及以Feature、Curveengine和Meta surface为特征机制的船型参数化的具体步骤。以Feature特征为核心的船型参数化方法不仅能为船型曲面的快速建立提供技术支撑,还可以为性能分析和优化提供基础条件。
