Based on a review of existing literature and government documents,an analysis of official statistics,and case studies of both coastal and inland regions in several provinces(especially Fujian Province),this paper prov...Based on a review of existing literature and government documents,an analysis of official statistics,and case studies of both coastal and inland regions in several provinces(especially Fujian Province),this paper provides a systematic examination of in situ urbanization in China.The paper first reviews the processes of in situ urbanization and its importance in China's overall urbanization process,and then examines various factors and mechanisms contributing to its emergence and development.The paper further looks at the changing trends of in situ urbanization in both the coastal and inland regions in China,and discusses the challenges and opportunities these pose,paying particular attention to their implications for the development of areas that have experienced outmigration in the context of the emerging trend of return migration.The paper concludes with a discussion on planning and policy implications of in situ urbanization for China in the context of its National New-type Urbanization Plan,and for other developing countries with similar conditions,and calls for a new developmental approach incorporating migration and in situ urbanization into an integrated framework.展开更多
With rapid urbanization,millions of rural villagers have become urban citizens in China.This paper estimates the effect of the in situ urbanization policy on an individual's health by employing the difference-in-d...With rapid urbanization,millions of rural villagers have become urban citizens in China.This paper estimates the effect of the in situ urbanization policy on an individual's health by employing the difference-in-differences framework and using panel survey data from the China Family Panel Studies.Our findings show that this program,unlike other kinds of urbanization,which have had negative impacts on mental health or made people smoke or drink more,increased people's self-reported health status significantly.Further mechanism analysis reveals that the in situ urbanization policy afected health by increasing people's confidence in the future,their satisfaction with their current lives,and their medical insurance enrollment.This study highlights the importance of"the city comes to villagers"urbanization in China,and it can play an essential role in advancing the urbanization rate and avoiding the negative impacts of urbanization on health.展开更多
