Both heat transfer and flux distribution characteristics of the nozzle sprays on the slab were considered, and the complicated boundary conditions, such as spray cooling, natural convection, thermal radiation as well as contact cooling of individual rolls were involved in the model. By using the calibrated caster dependent model factors, the calculated temperature and shell thickness accorded well with the measured. Furthermore, a dynamic secondary water cooling control system was also developed on the basis of a two-dimensional transient heat transfer model (named "online model") and incremental PID control algorithm to reduce slab surface temperature fluctuation in unsteady state. Compared with the traditional spray table control method, the present online model and dynamic PID control demonstrate a higher capability and flexibility to adjust cooling water flowrate and reduce slab surface temperature fluctuation when the casting speed is changed.展开更多

The ultrasonic test (UT) is the main type of non-destructive flaw detection for heavy plates, which is important because one of the main reasons for plate defects is ultrasonic flaws. This study, based on Baosteel' s practical experience in the manufacture of heavy plates, elucidates the cause of defect formation by analyzing ultrasonic flaw testing maps and using special equipment, such as the scanning electron microscope, electron probe and the optical microscope. The author puts forward the following improvement measures: ① Ultrasonic flaws are caused by central porosity and segregation,[H] bubbles and inclusion in slabs.②Ultrasonic flaws are more likely to occur in the bottom and top of slabs rather than the other positions in the casting sequence. It is clear that one-quarter of the inner camber' s thickness is accumulated inclusion.③It is clear that overheating in the tundish and the flow of the casting mould have an effect on ultrasonic flaws caused by inclusions.④Soft reduction improves central porosity and segregation, which decreases the number of ultrasonic flaws in the plate.展开更多

It was known from the investigation that a big "spring uprush" formed on surface around the long shroud when molten steel flowed into a turbulence inhibitor(TI) with extending lips and rushed up reversely out of the TI, while four small "spring uprushes" existed on surface when a TI without extending lips because the liquid steel flowed mainly out of the 4 corners of the TI. The flow of liquid steel in the former tundish configuration was not reasonable and the height of an area where temperature was less than 1819 K was about half of liquid surface height on the right side of the stopper, which meant that big dead zone existed in the former tundish configuration. In the optimal one, the height of such area was only seventh of the liquid surface height. The RTD curves obtained from the mathematical simulation basically agreed with those from the physical modeling and the flow characteristics obtained from these two methods agreed with each other.展开更多
