Face bolting has been widely utilized to enhance the stability of tunnel face, particularly in soft soil tunnels. However, the influence of bolt reinforcement and its layout on tunnel face stability has not been systematically studied.Based on the theory of linear elastic mechanics, this study delved into the specific mechanisms of bolt reinforcement on the tunnel face in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. It also identified the primary failure types of bolts.Additionally,a design approach for tunnel face bolts that incorporates spatial layout was established using the limit equilibrium method to enhance the conventional wedge-prism model. The proposed model was subsequently validated through various means, and the specific influence of relevant bolt design parameters on tunnel face stability was analyzed.Furthermore, design principles for tunnel face bolts under different geological conditions were presented. The findings indicate that bolt failure can be categorized into three stages:tensile failure, pullout failure, and comprehensive failure.Increasing cohesion, internal friction angle, bolt density, and overlap length can effectively enhance tunnel face stability.Due to significant variations in stratum conditions, tailored design approaches based on specific failure stages are necessary for bolt design. 展开更多

Time-varying mesh stiffness(TVMS)is a vital internal excitation source for the spiral bevel gear(SBG)transmission system.Spalling defect often causes decrease in gear mesh stiffness and changes the dynamic characteristics of the gear system, which further increases noise and vibration. This paper aims to calculate the TVMS and establish dynamic model of SBG with spalling defect. In this study,a novel analytical model based on slice method is proposed to calculate the TVMS of SBG considering spalling defect.Subsequently, the influence of spalling defect on the TVMS is studied through a numerical simulation, and the proposed analytical model is verified by a finite element model.Besides,an 8-degrees-of-freedom dynamic model is established for SBG transmission system.Incorporating the spalling defect into TVMS,the dynamic responses of spalled SBG are analyzed. The numerical results indicate that spalling defect would cause periodic impact in time domain. Finally,an experiment is designed to verify the proposed dynamic model. The experimental results show that the spalling defect makes the response characterized by periodic impact with the rotating frequency of spalled pinion. 展开更多

Volume parameter is the basic content of a spatial body object morphology analysis. However, the challenge lies in the volume calculation of irregular objects. The point cloud slicing method proposed in this study effectively works in calculating the volume of the point cloud of the spatial object obtained through three-dimensional laser scanning(3DLS).In this method,a uniformly spaced sequent slicing process is first conducted in a specific direction on the point cloud of the spatial object obtained through 3DLS.A series of discrete point cloud slices corresponding to the point cloud bodies are then obtained.Subsequently, the outline boundary polygon of the point cloud slicing is searched one by one in accordance with the slicing sequence and areas of the polygon. The point cloud slice is also calculated. Finally, the individual point cloud section volume is calculated through the slicing areas and the adjacent slicing gap. Thus, the total volume of the scanned spatial object can be calculated by summing up the individual volumes.According to the results and analysis of the calculated examples, the slice-based volume-calculating method for the point cloud of irregular objects obtained through 3DLS is correct, concise in process, reliable in results, efficient in calculation methods, and controllable on accuracy. This method comes as a good solution to the volume calculation of irregular objects. 展开更多

Reasonable assessment of slope deformation under cyclic loading is of great significance for securing the safety of slopes. The observations of centrifuge model tests are analyzed on the slope deformation behavior under cyclic loading conditions. The potential slip surface is the key for slope failure and follows two rules:(i) the relative horizontal displacement along the potential slip surface is invariable at an elevation, and(ii) the soil along the slip surface exhibits the same degradation pattern. These rules are effective regardless of the location of the potential slip surface throughout the entire deformation process of a homogeneous slope, ranging from the initial deformation stage to the failure process and to the post-failure stage. A new, simplified method is proposed by deriving the displacement compatibility equation and unified degradation equation according to the fundamental rules. The method has few parameters that can be determined through traditional element tests. The predictions from the proposed method agree with the centrifuge test results with vertical loading and shaking table loading. This result confirms that the proposed method is effective in predicting the full deformation process of slopes under different cyclic loading conditions. 展开更多

The original temporal clustering analysis (OTCA) is an effective technique for obtaining brain activation maps when the timing and location of the activation are completely unknown, but its deficiency of sensitivity is exposed in processing brain activation signal which is relatively weak. The time slice analysis method based on OTCA is proposed considering the weakness of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal of the rat model. By dividing the stimulation period into several time slices and analyzing each slice to detect the activated pixels respectively after the background removal, the sensitivity is significantly improved. The inhibitory response in the hypothalamus after glucose loading is detected successfully with this method in the experiment on rat. Combined with the OTCA method, the time slice analysis method based on OTCA is effective on detecting when, where and which type of response will happen after stimulation, even if the fMRI signal is weak. 展开更多

Nowadays the cylindrical surface method has been used widely to analyze slope stability. However, this method contains two main disadvantages: firstly, the slip surface is assumed to be in circular shape while in fact it is ellipsoid commonly; and secondly, resolve by difference method causing immensely complicated process due to statically indeterminate equations. In this paper, the authors have presented a method that allows transferring of ellipsoid slip surface to cylindrical shape and carries out a single variable equation (by applying integration method). Also thanks to this method, the current cylindrical surface method has been proved that its application is proper for man-made slopes but usually inappropriate for natural ones. Those results help analysis of slope stability reaching closer to reality. 展开更多

Multi-layer slopes are widely found in clay residue receiving fields.A generalized horizontal slice method(GHSM)for assessing the stability of multi-layer slopes that considers the energy dissipation between adjacent horizontal slices is presented. In view of the upper-bound limit analysis theory, the energy equation is derived and the ultimate failure mode is generated by comparing the sliding surface passing through the slope toe(mode A)with that below(mode B).In addition, the influence of the number of slices on the stability coefficients in the GHSM is studied and the stable value is obtained.Compared to the original method(Chen’s method),the GHSM can acquire more precise results, which takes into account the energy dissipation in the inner sliding soil mass. Moreover, the GHSM,limit equilibrium method(LEM)and numerical simulation method(NSM)are applied to analyze the stability of a multi-layer slope with different slope angles and the results of the safety factor and failure mode are very close in each case. The ultimate failure modes are shown to be mode B when the slope angle is not more than 28°.It illustrates that the determination of the ultimate sliding surface requires comparison of multiple failure modes, not only mode A. 展开更多

Based on a shallow-buried coal seam covered with thick loose layers in hilly loess areas of western China,we developed a mechanical model for a mining slope with slope stability analysis, and studied the mechanism of formation and development of a sliding ground fissure by the circular sliding slice method. Moreover, we established a prediction model of a sliding fissure based on a mechanical mechanism, and verified its reliability on face 52,304, an engineering example, situated at Daliuta coal mine of Shendong mining area in western China. The results show that the stress state of a mining slope is changed by its gravity and additional stress from the shallow-buried coal seam and gully terrain. The mining slope is found to be most unstable when the ratio of the down-sliding to anti-sliding force is the maximum, causing local fractures and sliding fissures. The predicted angles for the sliding fissure of face 52,304 on both sides of the slope are found to be 64.2° and 82.4°, which are in agreement with the experimental data. 展开更多

Based on the slice method of the non-circular slip surface for the calculation of integral stability of slope, an improved genetic algorithm was proposed, which can freely search for the most dangerous slip surface of slope and the corresponding minimum safety factor without supposing the geometric shape of the most dangerous slip surface. This improved genetic algorithm can simulate the genetic evolution process of organisms and avoid the local minimum value compared with the classical methods. The results of engineering cases show that it is a global optimal algorithm and has many advantages, such as higher efficiency and shorter time than the simple genetic algorithm. 展开更多

In the zones of high seismic activity, tailings dam should be assessed for the stability against earthquake forces. In the present paper, a simplified method is proposed to compute the factor of safety of tailings dams. The strain-dependent dynamic properties are used to assess the stability of tailings dams under seismic conditions. The effect of foundation soil properties on the seismic stability of tailings dams is studied using the proposed method. For the given input parameters, the factor of safety for lowfrequency input motions is nearly 26% lower than that for high-frequency input excitations. The impedance ratio and the depth of foundation have significant effect on the seismic factor of safety of tailings dams. The results from the proposed method are well compared with the existing pseudo-static method of analysis. Tailings dams are vulnerable to damage for low-frequency input motions. 展开更多

Although slice methods are simple and effective slope stability analysis approaches, they are statically indeterminate.Several modifications of the slice method, such as the Spencer,MorgensternPrice, and Chen-Morgenstern methods, are statically determinate and solvable as they assume the inter-slice force inclination angle;however, there is a small gap between the assumptions and actual landslide stability analysis.Through reasonable theoretical analysis, the Su slice method provides a reliable approach for determining the inter-slice force inclination angle that can be used in slice analysis to accurately analyse, calculate, and evaluate the stability of landslides. However, the Su slice method requires further research and analysis, especially in terms of the parameter values sinλbiandρ.In this study,we investigated more accurate methods for calculating the parameters sinλbiandρ.In addition,an adjustment coefficient(μ)was introduced to improve the solution method for the inter-slice force inclination angle. The inter-slice force inclination and safety factors of three landslides with arc-shaped slip surfaces and one landslide with a polyline-shaped slip surface were analysed and compared using the different slice methods. The improved inter-slice force inclination not only satisfies the calculation of static force equilibrium condition but also satisfies the calculation of both the force and moment equilibrium conditions. The improved method for calculating inter-slice force inclination presented the best correlation. The safety factors calculated using the improved Su slice method were close to those obtained using numerical simulations and the Morgenstern-Price method.Despite negligible differences among the safety factors calculated using the Su slice, improved Su slice, and M-P methods, the accuracy of the improved Su slice method was better than the M-P method in terms of inter-slice force inclination angles which can be useful to improve protection engineering design. 展开更多

As one of the most typical fault forms of the helical gear, the crack will change the dynamic excitation and further affect the dynamic behaviors of the transmission systems.Due to the complicated structure of the helical gears, the coupling effect between the neighboring loaded teeth is usually ignored in the mesh stiffness calculation, making it considerably overestimated especially in the case of the crack fault. An improved mesh stiffness calculation method of helical gear with spatial crack is proposed to make up this gap.The interactions between the loaded neighboring teeth induced by the gear body flexibility were considered to improve the calculation accuracy and applicability.Besides, the load distribution law for the engaged cracked tooth along the tooth width and profile can be obtained. The results indicated that the mesh stiffness of the multi-tooth engagement calculation using this model could be further improved compared with the traditional methods. Finally, the effects of the helix angle, crack depth, and crack propagation length on the mesh stiffness and load distribution were investigated using the proposed method. 展开更多

In the past, the pseudo-static method used to be the most common for evaluating the stability of landslides under seismic loads, in which static forces acting on the center of gravity of a sliding body are used to consider the effects of earthquake. However, seismic loads of rock and soil differ from time and location to time and location. Obviously, it is irrational for the pseudo-static approach to be applied to solving dynamic problems. In this paper, a displacement- pseudo-dynamic model is proposed to assess seismic stability of landslides, in which the sinusoidal- cosinusoidal wave is applied to simulating earthquake displacement, and an "amplification factor" of peak seismic displacement is referred to as the amplification of seismic wave when it propagates from the bottom to the top of the landslide. The effects of physico-mechanical behaviors of a sliding body on seismic stability of soil slopes are taken into account as well as inertia forces and damping forces. The sensitivity analyses on the permanent displacement and the dynamic factor of safety of landslides are studied in detail. Moreover, a large-scale Tangjiashan landslide that occurred in Wenchuan earthquake is investigated to verify the robustness and precision of the present method. It is found that the results from the present method is in good agreement with those from the previous method. 展开更多
