Safe, ef cient, and sustainable operations and control are primary objectives in industrial manufacturing processes. State-of-the-art technologies heavily rely on human intervention, thereby showing apparent limitations in practice. The burgeoning era of big data is in uencing the process industries tremendously, providing unprecedented opportunities to achieve smart manufacturing. This kind of manufacturing requires machines to not only be capable of relieving humans from intensive physical work, but also be effective in taking on intellectual labor and even producing innovations on their own. To attain this goal, data analytics and machine learning are indispensable. In this paper, we review recent advances in data analytics and machine learning applied to the monitoring, control, and optimization of industrial processes, paying particular attention to the interpretability and functionality of machine learning mod- els. By analyzing the gap between practical requirements and the current research status, promising future research directions are identi ed. 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to provide a framework for addressing the disconnect between metadata and data science. Data science cannot progress without metadata research. This paper takes steps toward advancing the synergy between metadata and data science, and identifies pathways for developing a more cohesive metadata research agenda in data science. Design/methodology/approach: This paper identifies factors that challenge metadata research in the digital ecosystem, defines metadata and data science, and presents the concepts big metadata, smart metadata, and metadata capital as part of a metadata lingua franca connecting to data science. Findings: The "utilitarian nature" and "historical and traditional views" of metadata are identified as two intersecting factors that have inhibited metadata research. Big metadata, smart metadata, and metadata capital are presented as part ofa metadata linguafranca to help frame research in the data science research space. Research limitations: There are additional, intersecting factors to consider that likely inhibit metadata research, and other significant metadata concepts to explore. Practical implications: The immediate contribution of this work is that it may elicit response, critique, revision, or, more significantly, motivate research. The work presented can encourage more researchers to consider the significance of metadata as a research worthy topic within data science and the larger digital ecosystem. Originality/value: Although metadata research has not kept pace with other data science topics, there is little attention directed to this problem. This is surprising, given that metadata is essential for data science endeavors. This examination synthesizes original and prior scholarship to provide new grounding for metadata research in data science. 展开更多

Security and privacy issues have become a rapidly growing problem with the fast development of big data in public health. However, big data faces many ongoing serious challenges in the process of collection, storage, and use.Among them, data security and privacy problems have attracted extensive interest. In an effort to overcome this challenge, this article aims to present a distributed privacy preservation approach based on smart contracts and Intel Software Guard Extensions(SGX).First of all,we define SGX as a trusted edge computing node, design data access module, data protection module, and data integrity check module,to achieve hardware-enhanced data privacy protection. Then,we design a smart contract framework to realize distributed data access control management in a big data environment. The crucial role of the smart contract was revealed by designing multiple access control contracts, register contracts, and history contracts.Access control contracts provide access control methods for different users and enable static access verification and dynamic access verification by checking the user’s properties and history behavior.Register contract contains user property information, edge computing node information, the access control and history smart contract information, and provides functions such as registration, update, and deletion.History contract records the historical behavior information of malicious users, receives the report information of malicious requestors from the access control contract, implements a misbehavior check method to determines whether the requestor has misbehavior, and returns the corresponding result. Finally,we design decentralized system architecture, prove the security properties, and analysis to verify the feasibility of the system. Results demonstrate that our method can effectively improve the timeliness of data, reduce network latency, and ensure the security, reliability, and traceability of data. 展开更多

The implementation of artificial intelligence(AI)in a smart society,in which the analysis of human habits is mandatory, requires automated data scheduling and analysis using smart applications,a smart infrastructure, smart systems, and a smart network. In this context, which is characterized by a large gap between training and operative processes,a dedicated method is required to manage and extract the massive amount of data and the related information mining. The method presented in this work aims to reduce this gap with near-zero-failure advanced diagnostics(AD)for smart management, which is exploitable in any context of Society 5.0,thus reducing the risk factors at all management levels and ensuring quality and sustainability. We have also developed innovative applications for a humancentered management system to support scheduling in the maintenance of operative processes, for reducing training costs, for improving production yield, and for creating a human–machine cyberspace for smart infrastructure design. The results obtained in 12 international companies demonstrate a possible global standardization of operative processes, leading to the design of a near-zero-failure intelligent system that is able to learn and upgrade itself. Our new method provides guidance for selecting the new generation of intelligent manufacturing and smart systems in order to optimize human–machine interactions, with the related smart maintenance and education. 展开更多

Big data has the ability to open up innovative and ground-breaking prospects for the electrical grid, which also supports to obtain a variety of technological, social, and financial benefits. There is an unprecedented amount of heterogeneous big data as a consequence of the growth of power grid technologies, along with data processing and advanced tools. The main obstacles in turning the heterogeneous large dataset into useful results are computational burden and information security. The original contribution of this paper is to develop a new big data framework for detecting various intrusions from the smart grid systems with the use of AI mechanisms. Here,an AdaBelief Exponential Feature Selection(AEFS)technique is used to efficiently handle the input huge datasets from the smart grid for boosting security. Then,a Kernel based Extreme Neural Network(KENN)technique is used to anticipate security vulnerabilities more effectively. The Polar Bear Optimization(PBO)algorithm is used to efficiently determine the parameters for the estimate of radial basis function. Moreover, several types of smart grid network datasets are employed during analysis in order to examine the outcomes and efficiency of the proposed AdaBelief Exponential Feature Selection-Kernel based Extreme Neural Network(AEFS-KENN)big data security framework. The results reveal that the accuracy of proposed AEFS-KENN is increased up to 99.5%with precision and AUC of 99%for all smart grid big datasets used in this study. 展开更多

The technological evolution emerges a unified (Industrial) Internet of Things network, where loosely coupled smart manufacturing devices build smart manufacturing systems and enable comprehensive collaboration possibilities that increase the dynamic and volatility of their ecosystems. On the one hand, this evolution generates a huge field for exploitation, but on the other hand also increases complexity including new challenges and requirements demanding for new approaches in several issues. One challenge is the analysis of such systems that generate huge amounts of (continuously generated) data, potentially containing valuable information useful for several use cases, such as knowledge generation, key performance indicator (KPI) optimization, diagnosis, predication, feedback to design or decision support. This work presents a review of Big Data analysis in smart manufacturing systems. It includes the status quo in research, innovation and development, next challenges, and a comprehensive list of potential use cases and exploitation possibilities. 展开更多

Today,Internet of Things(IoT)is a technology paradigm which convinces many researchers for the purpose of achieving high performance of packets delivery in IoT applications such as smart cities.Interconnecting various physical devices such as sensors or actuators with the Internet may causes different constraints on the network resources such as packets delivery ratio, energy efficiency,end-to-end delays etc. However, traditional scheduling methodologies in large-scale environments such as big data smart cities cannot meet the requirements for high performance network metrics. In big data smart cities applications which need fast packets transmission ratio such as sending priority packets to hospitals for an emergency case,an efficient schedulingmechanism ismandatory which is the main concern of this paper. In this paper,we overcome the shortcoming issues of the traditional scheduling algorithms that are utilized in big data smart cities emergency applications.Transmission information about the priority packets between the source nodes(i.e.,people with emergency cases)and the destination nodes(i.e.,hospitals)is performed before sending the packets in order to reserve transmission channels and prepare the sequence of transmission of theses priority packets between the two parties. In our proposed mechanism,Software Defined Networking(SDN)with centralized communication controller will be responsible for determining the scheduling and processing sequences for priority packets in big data smart cities environments. In this paper,we compare between our proposed Priority Packets Deadline First scheduling scheme(PPDF)with existing and traditional scheduling algorithms that can be used in urgent smart cities applications in order to illustrate the outstanding network performance parameters of our scheme such as the average waiting time, packets loss rates, priority packets end-to-end delay, and efficient energy consumption. 展开更多

Although big data are widely used in various fields, its application is still rare in the study of mining subsidence prediction(MSP)caused by underground mining.Traditional research in MSP has the problem of oversimplifying geological mining conditions, ignoring the fluctuation of rock layers with space. In the context of geospatial big data,a data-intensive FLAC3D(Fast Lagrangian Analysis of a Continua in 3 Dimensions)model is proposed in this paper based on borehole logs.In the modeling process,we developed a method to handle geospatial big data and were able to make full use of borehole logs. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by comparing the results of the traditional method, proposed method, and field observation. The findings show that the proposed method has obvious advantages over the traditional prediction results. The relative error of the maximum surface subsidence predicted by the proposed method decreased by 93.7%and the standard deviation of the prediction results(which was 70 points)decreased by 39.4%,on average. The data-intensive modeling method is of great significance for improving the accuracy of mining subsidence predictions. 展开更多

Smart cities make use of a variety of smart technology to improve societies in better ways.Such intelligent technologies,on the other hand, pose sig-nificant concerns in terms of power usage and emission of carbons. The suggested study is focused on technological networks for big data-driven systems. With the support of software-defined technologies,a transportation-aided multicast routing system is suggested.By using public transportation as another communication platform in a smart city, network communication is enhanced. The primary objec-tive is to use as little energy as possible while delivering as much data as possible. The Attribute Decision Making with Capacitated Vehicle(CV)Routing Problem(RP)and Half Open Multi-Depot Heterogeneous Vehicle Routing Problem is used in the proposed research. For the optimum network selection,a Multi-Attribute Decision Making(MADM)method is utilized. For the sake of reducing energy usage, the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem(CVRP)is employed. To reduce the transportation cost and risk,Half Open Multi-Depot Heterogeneous Vehicle Routing Problem is used. Moreover,a mixed-integer programming approach is used to deal with the problem. To produce Pareto optimal solutions,an intelligent algorithm based on the epsilon constraint approach and genetic algorithm is cre-ated.A scenario of Auckland Transport is being used to validate the concept of offloading the information onto the buses for energy-efficient and delay-tolerant data transfer. Therefore the experiments have demonstrated that the buses may be used effectively to carry out the data by customer requests while using 30%of less energy than the other systems. 展开更多
