False data injection attack(FDIA)is an attack that affects the stability of grid cyber-physical system(GCPS)by evading the detecting mechanism of bad data.Existing FDIA detection methods usually employ complex neural networkmodels to detect FDIA attacks. However, they overlook the fact that FDIA attack samples at public-private network edges are extremely sparse, making it difficult for neural network models to obtain sufficient samples to construct a robust detection model. To address this problem, this paper designs an efficient sample generative adversarial model of FDIA attack in public-private network edge, which can effectively bypass the detectionmodel to threaten the power grid system.A generative adversarial network(GAN)framework is first constructed by combining residual networks(ResNet)with fully connected networks(FCN).Then,a sparse adversarial learning model is built by integrating the time-aligned data and normal data, which is used to learn the distribution characteristics between normal data and attack data through iterative confrontation.Furthermore,we introduce a Gaussian hybrid distributionmatrix by aggregating the network structure of attack data characteristics and normal data characteristics, which can connect and calculate FDIA data with normal characteristics. Finally, efficient FDIA attack samples can be sequentially generated through interactive adversarial learning.Extensive simulation experiments are conducted with IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus system data, and the results demonstrate that the generated attack samples of the proposed model can present superior performance compared to state-of-the-art models in terms of attack strength, robustness, and covert capability. 展开更多

Smart grid expertise emphasises on the compound connections of the electricity to the grid, along with computing, control and communication interface. It will bring together in future smart infrastructure for power system. Investigating these complex dynamic interactions is crucial for the efficiency and robustness of the emerging smart grid. In particular, it is one of the key elements for smart-grids to establish the dynamics among sources of grid. This paper proposes the vital operation of renewable energy sources (RES) like Solar Photovoltaic (PV), wind energy with existing grid of a. c. network of power system in view of cognitive reliable operation of RES as add-on source of power. The research presents sequence of operation of these sources by optimal power flow based on power flow chart for demand side management as a smart grid of power system. The power grid is undergoing a transformation from synchronous generators(SGs) toward inverter-based resources(IBRs). The stochasticity, asynchronicity, and limited-inertia characteristics of IBRs bring about challenges to grid resilience. Virtual power plants(VPPs) are emerging technologies to improve the grid resilience and advance the transformation. By judiciously aggregating geographically distributed energy resources(DERs) as individual electrical entities, VPPs can provide capacity and ancillary services to grid operations and participate in electricity wholesale markets. This paper aims to provide a concise overview of the concept and development of VPPs and the latest progresses in VPP operation, with the focus on VPP scheduling and control. Based on this overview, we identify a few potential challenges in VPP operation and discuss the opportunities of integrating the multi-agent system(MAS)-based strategy into the VPP operation to enhance its scalability, performance and resilience. 展开更多

The governmental electric utility and the private sector are joining hands to meet the target of electrifying all households by 2024.However,the aforementioned goal is challenged by households that are scattered in remote areas. So far,Solar Home Systems(SHS)have mostly been applied to increase electricity access in rural areas.SHSs have continuous constraints to meet electricity demands and cannot run income-generating activities. The current research presents the feasibility study of electrifying Remera village with the smart microgrid as a case study. The renewable energy resources available in Remera are the key sources of electricity in that village. The generation capacity is estimated based on the load profile. The microgrid configurations are simulated with HOMER,and the genetic algorithm is used to analyze the optimum cost.By analyzing the impact of operation and maintenance costs, the results show that the absence of subsidies increases the levelized cost of electricity(COE)five times greater than the electricity price from the public utility. The microgrid made up of PV,diesel generator, and batteries proved to be the most viable solution and ensured continuous power supply to customers.By considering the subsidies,COE reaches 0.186$/kWh,a competitive price with electricity from public utilities in Rwanda. 展开更多

After the integration of large-scale DistributedGeneration(DG)into the distribution network, the randomness and volatility of its output result in a reduction of spatiotemporal alignment between power generation and demand in the distribution network, exacerbating the phenomenon of wind and solar power wastage. As a novel power system model, the fundamental concept of Regional Autonomous Power Grids(RAPGs)is to achieve localized management and energy autonomy, thereby facilitating the effective consumption of DGs.Therefore, this paper proposes a distributed resource planning strategy that enhances the autonomy capabilities of regional power grids by considering multiple evaluation indexes for autonomy.First,a regional Energy Storage(ES)configuration strategy is proposed. This strategy can select a suitable reference value for the upper limit of ES configuration based on the regional load andDGoutput to maximize the elimination of source load deviations in the region as the upper limit constraint of ES capacity. Then,a control strategy for regional ES is proposed, the charging and discharging reference line of ES is set,and multiple autonomy and economic indexes are used as objective functions to select different proportions of ES to control the distributed resources of the regional power grid and establish evaluation indexes of the internal regional generation and load power ratio, the proportion of power supply matching hours, new energy consumption rate and tie line power imbalance outside the region to evaluate changes in the regional autonomy capabilities. The final simulation results showthat in the real regional grid example, the planning method in the planning year in the region of the overall power supply matching hour ratio and new energy consumption rate increased by 3.9%and 4.8%on average, and the power imbalance of the tie line decreased by 7.8%on average. The proposed planning approach enables the maximization of regional autonomy while effectively smoothing the fluctuation of power exchange between the regional grid and the higher-level grid. This presents a rational and effective planning solution for the regional grid, facilitating the coordinated development between the region and the distribution network. 展开更多

Due to the high inherent uncertainty of renewable energy, probabilistic day-ahead wind power forecasting is crucial for modeling and controlling the uncertainty of renewable energy smart grids in smart cities. However, the accuracy and reliability of high-resolution day-ahead wind power forecasting are constrained by unreliable local weather prediction and incomplete power generation data. This article proposes a physics-informed artificial intelligence(AI)surrogates method to augment the incomplete dataset and quantify its uncertainty to improve wind power forecasting performance. The incomplete dataset, built with numerical weather prediction data, historical wind power generation, and weather factors data,is augmented based on generative adversarial networks. After augmentation, the enriched data is then fed into a multiple AI surrogates model constructed by two extreme learning machine networks to train the forecasting model for wind power. Therefore, the forecasting models’accuracy and generalization ability are improved by mining the implicit physics information from the incomplete dataset. An incomplete dataset gathered from a wind farm in North China, containing only 15 days of weather and wind power generation data withmissing points caused by occasional shutdowns,is utilized to verify the proposed method’s performance.Compared with other probabilistic forecastingmethods, the proposed method shows better accuracy and probabilistic performance on the same incomplete dataset, which highlights its potential for more flexible and sensitive maintenance of smart grids in smart cities. 展开更多

MigroGrid(MG)has emerged to resolve the growing demand for energy. But because of its inconsistent output,it can result in various power quality(PQ)issues.PQ is a problem that is becoming more and more important for the reliability of power systems that use renewable energy sources.Similarly, the employment of nonlinear loads will introduce harmonics into the system and,as a result, cause distortions in the current and voltage waveforms as well as low power quality issues in the supply system. Thus, this research focuses on power quality enhancement in the MG using hybrid shunt filters. However, the performance of the filter mainly depends upon the design, and stability of the controller. The efficiency of the proposed filter is enhanced by incorporating an enhanced adaptive fuzzy neural network(AFNN)controller. The performance of the proposed topology is examined in a MATLAB/Simulink environment, and experimental findings are provided to validate the effectiveness of this approach.Further, the results of the proposed controller are compared with Adaptive Fuzzy Back-Stepping(AFBS)and Adaptive Fuzzy Sliding(AFS)to prove its superiority over power quality improvement in MG.From the analysis,it can be observed that the proposed system reduces the total harmonic distortion by about 1.8%,which is less than the acceptable limit standard. 展开更多

Due to growing concerns regarding climate change and environmental protection, smart power generation has become essential for the economical and safe operation of both conventional thermal power plants and sustainable energy.Traditional first-principle model-based methods are becoming insufficient when faced with the ever-growing system scale and its various uncertainties. The burgeoning era of machine learning(ML)and data-driven control(DDC)techniques promises an improved alternative to these outdated methods. This paper reviews typical applications of ML and DDC at the level of monitoring, control, optimization, and fault detection of power generation systems, with a particular focus on uncovering how these methods can function in evaluating, counteracting,or withstanding the effects of the associated uncertainties.A holistic view is provided on the control techniques of smart power generation, from the regulation level to the planning level. The benefits of ML and DDC techniques are accordingly interpreted in terms of visibility, maneuverability, flexibility, profitability, and safety(abbreviated as the“5-TYs”),respectively.Finally,an outlook on future research and applications is presented. 展开更多

In China, regions with abundant wind energy resources are generally located at the end of power grids. The power grid architecture in these regions is typically not sufficiently strong, and the energy structure is relatively simple. Thus, connecting large-capacity wind power units complicates the peak load regulation and stable operation of the power grids in these regions. Most wind turbines use power electronic converter technology, which affects the safety and stability of the power grid differently compared with conventional synchronous generators. Furthermore, fluctuations in wind power cause fluctuations in the output of wind farms, making it difficult to create and implement suitable power generation plans for wind farms. The generation technology and grid connection scheme for wind power and conventional thermal power generation differ considerably. Moreover, the active and reactive power control abilities of wind turbines are weaker than those of thermal power units, necessitating additional equipment to control wind turbines. Hence, to address the aforementioned issues with large-scale wind power generation, this study analyzes the differences between the grid connection and collection strategies for wind power bases and thermal power plants. Based on this analysis, the differences in the power control modes of wind power and thermal power are further investigated. Finally, the stability of different control modes is analyzed through simulation. The findings can be beneficial for the planning and development of large-scale wind power generation farms. 展开更多

Smart grid is an idea of upgradation of the traditional electric grid infrastructure. The efficiency of the existing electrical grid can be automated by integrating with innovative technical equipment such as:?high-tech forecasting system, digital sensors, advanced two-way communication and two-way power flow systems. Smart grid establishes an interface between utility and consumer which helps to use energy, based on the preferences of price, eco-friendly and without technical system issues. It empowers the grid to be more secure, reliable and efficient. The peer-reviewed articles and published government reports have been reviewed, based on the analysis of technical characteristics of power generation systems, eco-friendly sources of power generations, cost reduction, functionality and design of traditional grid versus smart grid. Furthermore, the innovative technologies that enable the grid to integrate with decentralized power generation system efficiently have been considered. This paper claims that in this modern era, it is arduous for traditional grid to fulfill the rising demand of electricity, along with sustainable, eco-friendly and stable power supply, as it cannot be efficiently integrated with decentralized and localized power generation systems and renewable energy sources. The result of this paper shows that decentralized and localized power generation systems are located close to end-users which decrease the transmission and supply cost of electricity. Innovative technologies allow the decentralized and localized power generation systems to be integrated with renewable energy sources which help to reduce the cost of utility services and provide clean energy. Moreover, technological advancement played a decisive role in enabling the electrical system to be more efficient. Electrical reliability can be improved,?greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced, renewable energy sources can efficiently be integrated,?and?rising demand for electricity can be met by embedding advanced applications and technological equipment in the electrical grid. 展开更多

In the 21st century Smart Grid and Renewable Energy technologies are an important issue with regards to global climate change problem and energy security. The evolution of current conventional or centralized generation in form of distributed generation and Smart Power Grid (SPG) has great opportunity and potentially can eradicate several issues associated with energy efficiency, energy security and the drawback of aging power system infrastructures. In order to meet the rising electrical power demand and increasing service quality as well as reducing pollution, the existing power grid infrastructure should be developed into Smart Grid (SG) that is flexible for interconnectivity with the distributed generation. However, integrating distributed generation to power system causes several technical issues especially system stability. To make the power grid become “smarter”, particularly in terms of stability, Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device especially Static VAR Compensator (SVC) is used. This paper explores Smart Grid technologies and distributed generation systems. Furthermore, it discusses the impact of distributed generation on Smart Grid, particularly its system stability after installing distributed generation in the Smart Grid. This was done by examining the system stability during interconnection and faults on the system and validated with Dig-SILENT Power Factory Software V 13.2. 展开更多

Typically, smart grid systems enhance the ability of conventional power system networks as it is vulnerable to several kinds of attacks. These vulnerabil-ities might cause the attackers or intruders to collapse the entire network system thus breaching the confidentiality and integrity of smart grid systems. Thus, for this purpose,Intrusion detection system(IDS)plays a pivotal part in offering a reliable and secured range of services in the smart grid framework.Several exist-ing approaches are there to detect the intrusions in smart grid framework, however they are utilizing an old dataset to detect anomaly thus resulting in reduced rate of detection accuracy in real-time and huge data sources. So as to overcome these limitations, the proposed technique is presented which employs both real-time raw data from the smart grid network and KDD99 dataset thus detecting anoma-lies in the smart grid network. In the grid side data acquisition, the power trans-mitted to the grid is checked and enhanced in terms of power quality by eradicating distortion in transmission lines. In this approach, power quality in the smart grid network is enhanced by rectifying the fault using a FACT device termed UPQC(Unified Power Quality Controller)and thereby storing the data in cloud storage. The data from smart grid cloud storage and KDD99 are pre-pro-cessed and are optimized using Improved Aquila Swarm Optimization(IASO)to extract optimal features. The probabilistic Recurrent Neural Network(PRNN)classifier is then employed for the prediction and classification of intrusions. At last, the performance is estimated and the outcomes are projected in terms of grid voltage, grid current,Total Harmonic Distortion(THD),voltage sag/swell,accu-racy,precision,recall,F-score,false acceptance rate(FAR),and detection rate of the classifier. The analysis is compared with existing techniques to validate the proposed model efficiency. 展开更多

There are numerous internet-connected devices attached to the industrial process through recent communication technologies, which enable machine-to-machine communication and the sharing of sensitive data through a new technology called the industrial internet of things(IIoTs).Most of the suggested security mechanisms are vulnerable to several cybersecurity threats due to their reliance on cloud-based services, external trusted authorities, and centralized architectures;they have high computation and communication costs, low performance, and are exposed to a single authority of failure and bottleneck.Blockchain technology(BC)is widely adopted in the industrial sector for its valuable features in terms of decentralization, security, and scalability. In our work,we propose a decentralized, scalable, lightweight, trusted and secure private network based on blockchain technology/smart contracts for the overhead circuit breaker of the electrical power grid of the Al-Kufa/Iraq power plant as an industrial application. The proposed scheme offers a double layer of data encryption, device authentication, scalability, high performance, low power consumption, and improves the industry’s operations;provides efficient access control to the sensitive data generated by circuit breaker sensors and helps reduce power wastage. We also address data aggregation operations, which are considered challenging in electric power smart grids. We utilize a multi-chain proof of rapid authentication(McPoRA)as a consensus mechanism, which helps to enhance the computational performance and effectively improve the latency. The advanced reduced instruction set computer(RISC)machinesARMCortex-M33 microcontroller adopted in our work,is characterized by ultra-low power consumption and high performance,as well as efficiency in terms of real-time cryptographic algorithms such as the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm(ECDSA).This improves the computational execution, increases the implementation speed of the asymmetric cryptographic algorithm and provides data integrity and device authenticity at the perceptual layer. Our experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves excellent performance, data security,real-time data processing, low power consumption(70.880 mW),and very low memory utilization(2.03%read-only memory(RAM)and 0.9%flash memory)and execution time(0.7424 s)for the cryptographic algorithm. This enables autonomous network reconfiguration on-demand and real-time data processing. 展开更多

Demand response has been intensively studied in recent years. It can motivate customers to change their consumption patterns according to the dynamic(time-varying) electricity price, which is considered to be the most cost-effective and reliable solution for smoothing the demand curve. However, many existing schemes, based on users' demand request in each period, require users to consume their requested electricity exactly, which sometimes causes inconvenience and losses to the utility, because customers cannot always be able to consume the accurate electricity demand due to various personal reasons. In this paper, we tackle this problem in a novel approach. Instead of charging after consumption, we adopt the prepayment mechanism to implement power request. Furthermore, we propose a trading market running by the control center to cope with the users' dynamic demand. It is noteworthy that both users' original demand and trading records are protected against potential adversaries including the curious control center. Through the numerical simulation, we demonstrate that our scheme is highly efficient in both computation and communication. 展开更多

Conventional electricity generation is one of the largest contributors to climate change. Renewable energy sources are a promising part of the solution but uncertainty combined with a lack of controllability prevents renewable sources of power from being direct substitutes of conventional energy sources. This shift towards a higher penetration of renewable energy into the electric grid can be realized with the implementation of a more sophisticated smart grid, which uses dynamic demand response to alter demand on following generation. Research on renewable energy penetration of the grid predominately focuses on wind and solar power resources but demand cannot always match availability from these sources and therefore greatly increases the need for energy storage. Tidal power differs from solar and wind. It’s a predictably renewable resource which makes it extremely valuable even on a relatively small scale. Introduction of tidal power in a high penetration micro-grid can serve to stabilize the grid and reduce the amount of storage required. Widely different time scale for wind, solar and tidal power availability results in low cross correlations and therefore increases stability. This research describes an incremental approach to migrating a grid-tie island towards the formation of a smart-micro grid. The system will include a high penetration of three distributed generation systems, wind, solar and tidal and utilize commercially available energy storage and a smart-home management controller. Dynamic demand response through load balancing is implemented to minimize interactions with the electric grid. A second component of this work is to determine the optimum tidal generation capacity for the micro grid such that needed storage capacity from batteries or the utility grid is minimized. 展开更多

The increasing use of renewable energy in the power system results in strong stochastic disturbances and degrades the control performance of the distributed power grids. In this paper,a novel multi-agent collaborative reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed with automatic optimization,namely,Dyna-DQL,to quickly achieve an optimal coordination solution for the multi-area distributed power grids. The proposed Dyna framework is combined with double Q-learning to collect and store the environmental samples. This can iteratively update the agents through buffer replay and real-time data. Thus the environmental data can be fully used to enhance the learning speed of the agents. This mitigates the negative impact of heavy stochastic disturbances caused by the integration of renewable energy on the control performance.Simulations are conducted on two different models to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate that the proposed Dyna-DQL algorithm exhibits superior stability and robustness compared to other reinforcement learning algorithms. 展开更多
