It w...Using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis dataset from 1959-2004, the location and strength of the ITCZ (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone), as well as their relations with typhoons in the northwestern Pacific were studied. It was found that the pentad location and strength of the ITCZ had close relations with the typhoon frequency. Higher latitude location or strengthened ITCZ were found to be favorable for the occurrence of typhoons over the Northwestern Pacific. An index was defined for ascertaining the location of the ITCZ. It was found that the index defined with the maximum value of pentad and monthly meridional shear of zonal wind speed could better describe the location of ITCZ than another index defined with the maximum value of convergence. Correlation analysis between the index of ITCZ and the maximum cloud cover in the tropics showed that there were close relations between the ITCZ determined by the index and the maximum tropical cloud belt. The strength index of an ITCZ was defined as the zonal wind speed difference at latitudes south and north of the ITCZ. It was found that there are close relations between the ITCZ intensity and typhoon occurrence in the South China Sea [10°N-20°N, 100°E-120°E] and regions east of the Philippines and near the Mariana Islands[5°N-20°N, 127.5°-150°E].展开更多

By the distinguishing texture characteristics encoded in wavelet transform domain, the text is fast detected from complex background images stored in the compressed format such as JPEG2000 without full decompress. Compared with some traditional character location methods, the proposed scheme has the advantages of low computational cost, robust to size and font of characters and high accuracy. Preliminary experimental results show that the proposed scheme is efficient and effective.展开更多

Therefore, the seed cotton of five promising hybrids na...The present study was conducted to analyze cotton cultivar and location differences in motes, and to determine the relationships among these and ginning outturn. Therefore, the seed cotton of five promising hybrids namely;G.77 × Pima S6 and G.84 × (G.74 × G.68) growing in [Kafr El-Sheikh - Kafr El-Dawar - Etay El-Barood - Damietta], G.89 × Pima S6 growing in [El-Sharkia - El-Gharbiya - El-Dakahliya - El-Monofiya], G.83 × (G.75 × 5844) × G.80 and G.90 × Australian growing in [Sohag - El-Minia - Beni-Sueif - El-Faium] were used in this study. The results obtained indicate that the varieties exhibited different behavior responses to environmental conditions. On the whole, environmental factors associated with differences in place of growth, appeared to have much more influence on the number of motes than did varietal factors. Most of the locks for the promising hybrids at the different locations tend to cluster around the mean of 6 or 7 seeds per lock. There is a fairly marked tendency for the lock index, lint weight and lint percentage to decrease as the motes percentage increase. On the other hand, most of the promising hybrids under study tend to increase in the seed index as the motes percentage increase. However, the increasing in seed index as a result of the increasing in motes percentage for some cotton cultivars growing at different environments could be explain the difference in behavior for these cotton cultivars in lint percentage.展开更多

Research has revealed that telecommuting can be effectively done f...Telecommuting is a Transportation Demand Management strategy to partially or completely replace the daily commute with telecommunication technologies. Research has revealed that telecommuting can be effectively done from special places provided for this purpose called telecenters. In telecenter-based telecommuting, trip lengths are shortened due to change in the location of work places. Thus suitable locations of telecenters play an important role in increasing the beneficial impacts of telecommuting in the transportation systems. In this research, a mathematical optimization model for finding optimal location and capacity of telecenters is proposed. This model is a bi-objective linear program, and a Fuzzy Goal Programming method with a preemptive structure is used to solve it. Telecommuting demand is classified into three groups of telecommuters and a priority structure that assigns the higher priority class to the closer telecenters is also incorporated into the model. The proposed model is implemented in a case study of finding optimal location of telecenters for government employees in Tehran (capital of Iran) metropolitan area. The base model is solved and its sensitivity to different parameters has been analyzed based on which, an optimal model is selected. The solution of this model is an optimal pattern for distribution of telecommuting capacities and yields the most system-wide benefits from implementation of telecommuting.展开更多

Among the major concerns, this paper studied the impact of connecting wind Turbine (WT) in radial distribution system with different penetration levels and different power factor (lead and lag) on power system voltage stability and power loss reduction. Load flow calculation was carried out using forward-backward sweep method. The analysis proceeds on 9- and 33-bus radial distribution systems. Results show that voltage stability enhancement and power loss reduction should be considered as WT installation objective.展开更多
