The year of 2018 marked the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up program. In the wake of 40-year economic development at a great speed, the sharp changes in individual living conditions accompanying urbanization process and the resultant self-identity issues are similar to those situations encountered by Western developed countries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and are reflected in youth movies with reform and opening-up as the background. Thus, based on the self-identity theory,an interpretation of individual development and dilemma in modern Chinese youth movies not only acts as a theoretical attempt, but also broadens the dimension in which such movies are interpreted, creating the value of interaction with society.Taking the youth movie Us and Them(中文片名:后来的我们)as an example, this paper adopts the semiotic approach for text analysis, and abstracts“young girl”,“Beijing”,“sofa”and other symbols from this movie to form the symbolic interpretation of three channels for building self-identity in modern society.Through“modern-traditional”diversion in terms of three dimensionsin the process of self-identity,this movie is found with trial and effort to describe and heal the self from the perspective of creative mentality, forming a metaphor of the loss and return of self-identity amongmodern Chinese. The outcome of analysis indicates that, when encountering self-identity crisis in modern society, the Chinese masses divert culturally from the modern to the traditional, banking on eliminating self-identity crisis with traditional family identity and family culture, which reflects that the family ethics still maintain core values in the modern Chinese mass culture. 展开更多

Understanding the Human Rights of Modern Individuals—Revisiting Habermas’s Dual Critique and the Reconstruction of Intersubjectivity

Human rights are not only pivotal in depicting the relationship between individuals and communities but also a focal point of political philosophical concerns oriented towards reality. The inseparability of human rights from individual self-identity reveals a contradiction between practicality and historicity in understanding individuals, as highlighted in the debate between liberalism and communitarianism. In order to reconcile this contradiction, Habermas, drawing from German classical philosophy, examines practicality and historicity separately: while Fichte intertwines objectivity in self-identity, revealing the practicality of individuals but neglecting their real elements, Hegel interprets self-identity under the concept of unity, examining individuals from a historical dimension but letting rational rules dominate reality. Ultimately, Habermas reconstructs the process of modern individual self-identity from the theory of communicative action by critiquing the shackles of subjective philosophy. He not only reconciles the divergence between practicality and historicity in self-identity, but also elucidates the intersubjective core inherent in human rights. 展开更多

We in this article explore the issue about what subjective-self is composed of. A distinctive feature of "I" is uniqueness or un-duplicableness. By critically reviewing a few thought experiments, we reason that subjective-self must be composed of more than a blob of brain cells which are sophisticated enough to think reflexively and a bundle of memories and perceptions. There must be a third constituent for the existence of "I". We put forward two hypotheses for the third constituent. One is that it is something like dark matters or dark energy. Another is that it is something in the higher dimensional space. A person would lose his self-consciousness after death since the death takes away the two necessary constituents of subjective-self, his brain and memories. Where the third constituent would go after death remains a mystery. 展开更多

The author examines the differentiation of self-identity, school treatment, and academic struggle between two Asian American students in U.S. Midwest urban school environments. Using an interview study, the author focuses on understanding the students' perspectives in relation to the label of model minority. The purpose of the study is to investigate how social, academic, and economic factors affect these students, including different outcomes in terms of school achievement and self-identity formation. The findings aim to help urban educators approach complex factors regarding minority students' educational opportunities. Comprehensive results identified that: (1) The concept of model minority significantly affects Asian American students at all levels of daily life; (2) Urban schools continue reinforcing social reproduction and producing perceptions based on socioeconomic background and intersectional discrimination; (3) The evidence in the study shows that school environments do not aid students in valuing their cultural capital; (4) Students from different social classes present different linguistic and behavioral patterns; and (5) Social stratification significantly influences students' perspectives in response to the Asian stereotype, self-identity, and racial hierarchy in school and society. 展开更多

Based on a survey of university teachers and students in Nanjing area of 2007,this article analyzes domestic users' awareness towards Open Access(OA),and the changes by comparing the corresponding data of 2006.The survey shows that the research evaluation system, the quality of literature and the payment for OA publications are the important factors for university users to choose OA or not.The authors finally suggest that the current research evaluation system should be reformed to accommodate OA journals.Meanwhile, great efforts should be devoted to improve the quality of OA literatures, and the governments and research institutions should provide stronger support than before. 展开更多

This paper examines historical urban fabrics’challenges regarding quality of life and visual disturbances despite their cultural and identity value.Regeneration and socialoriented approaches considering social, economic, and cultural dimensions preserve and enhance these valuable materials.Tactical urbanism, with its people-oriented approach, can address these issues. This study focused on Sarpol in Khomeinishahr County,Isfahan Province of Iran. The city’s urban structure divides into two parts:despite its active social structure and valuable spaces,Sarpol is a historic neighborhood with significant deterioration. We followed Corbin and Strauss’s version of Grounded Theory in the qualitative research methodology.Purposive and snowball sampling methods were employed to select 21 participants from the Sarpol neighborhood for semi-structured interviews. The analysis involved three stages of coding:open, axial, and selective. The themes included religious participation, identity, sustainable social bonds, indigenous dependence, and low environmental quality. The central issue identified was the crucial role of religious and cultural values as a driving force for tactical urbanism, which emerged as the most critical semantic domain related to the research problem. 展开更多
