This study endeavours to assess the deliberate distortion of historical memory in two works written in different periods of time by the same author, namely Vedat Kokona with the novel Me Valet e let,s (With the Waves of Life) published in the 1960s, as well as his own autobiography Endur ne Tisin e Kohes (Woven in the Veil of Time), which was written and published after the 1990s. The novel was written under the censorship conditions of social realism, and consequently the stance toward historical war figures was shaped by the ideological prism: "Enver Hoxha leads the war, opponents like Lumo Skendo collaborate with the enemy, and the indifferent intelligentsia must feel blameworthy for their non-engagement with the communists". This scheme apparently collapses after the 1990s, when Kokona took it upon himself to narrate his autobiography, in the abridgment entitled Woven in the Veil of Time. Therein is revealed his realistic assessment of the figures of Enver Hoxha, Lumo Skendo, Ernest Koliqi, etc. Freed at the time from the chains of ideological censure, in his memoirs, Kokona discusses these historical characters. Supplied with individual human sensitivity, facing good and evil, he reflects upon the past, with the consciousness of the intellectual who has witnessed an era permeated with major changes. 展开更多

In Turkey, from the second half of the nineteenth century, the shaping of an art of painting on the basis of Western understanding was realized with state support. From this period, certain art movements were seen as the means of modernization and Westernization. Therefore, impressionism, cubism, realism, and classicism were supported by the state as a formal artistic understanding. This attitude continued until the 1940s and artists painted certain subject matters on the basis of these art movements. The main theme and subject matters were the presentations of an idealized society such as palace's life, attractive women in Western appearance, happy peasants, war heroes, and beautiful views from the country. In the early 1940s, significant breakup began to take place in point of the theme and the subject matter of art. Social realism began to take shape for the first time in art in Turkey. The artists of Yeniler Grubu (Newcomers Group) focused on social phenomena related disadvantaged social groups rather than an idealized society. Some artists among the 1950 generation, especially Nedim Gunsur, Nuri iyem, and Miimtaz Yener, focused on migration and social problems that occurred correspondingly in the 1960s and 1970s. This paper aims to investigate how these artists depicted and interpreted the migration and its consequences. 展开更多

Up to now there still lacks relevant study on what role participating in English public speaking contests plays in cultivating students' English public speaking ability and the instruction of this course. The "CCTV CUP" English public speaking contest1 is one of the most important contests of this field. Despite a few studies on the "CCTV CUP" in the literature, none of them has focused on the contestants' perspective. This paper first attempts to describe the "CCTV CUP" English public speaking contest from the perspective of sociocultural theory and social realism. Then it takes 7 final contestants' "reactions to participating in the contest" for analysis, focusing on what impacts participating in this contest brought on them. The results show that participating in the "CCTV CUP" English public speaking contest not only deepened the contestants' understandings about English public speaking, but brought significant harvests at ability training, and the increase of life experience and wisdom. At last, it gives relevant suggestions on the instruction of English public speaking course. 展开更多
