Shearing dislocation is a common failure type for rock–backfill interfaces because of backfill sedimentation and rock strata movement in backfill mining goaf. This paper designed a test method for rock–backfill shearing dislocation.Using digital image techno-logy and three-dimensional(3D)laser morphology scanning techniques,a set of 3D models with rough joint surfaces was established.Further, the mechanical behavior of rock–backfill shearing dislocation was investigated using a direct shear test. The effects of interface roughness on the shear–displacement curve and failure characteristics of rock–backfill specimens were considered. The 3D fractal dimen-sion,profile line joint roughness coefficient(JRC),profile line two-dimensional fractal dimension, and the surface curvature of the frac-tures were obtained. The correlation characterization of surface roughness was then analyzed, and the shear strength could be measured and calculated using JRC.The results showed the following:there were three failure threshold value points in rock–backfill shearing dis-location:30%–50%displacement before the peak,70%–90%displacement before the peak, and 100%displacement before the peak to post-peak,which could be a sign for rock–backfill shearing dislocation failure. The surface JRC could be used to judge the rock–backfill shearing dislocation failure, including post-peak sliding, uniform variations, and gradient change, corresponding to rock–backfill disloca-tion failure on the field site. The research reveals the damage mechanism for rock–backfill complexes based on the free joint surface, fills the gap of existing shearing theoretical systems for isomerism complexes, and provides a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of possible disasters in backfill mining. 展开更多

The effects of vanadium(V)on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the TiC cermet fusion welding interface were studied by adjusting the content of V in the self-developed flux-cored wires using metal inert gas arc(MIG)welding for surfacing on the TiC cermet. The results show that the increase in V content promotes the element diffusion between TiC cermet and weld metal. There are no de-fects observed in the interface, and the diffusion of elements refers to excellent metallurgical bonding. The shear strength of the fusion zone initially decreases and then increases with the increase in V content. The maximum shear strength of the TiC cermet/weld interface, reaching 552 MPa,occurred when the V content reached 0.65%.Meanwhile,the average hardness in the transition zone reached 488.2 HV0.2. 展开更多

Frame and rocking wall(FRW)structures have excellent resilient performance during earthquakes. However, the concrete at interfacial corners of rocking walls(RWs)is easily crushed due to local extreme compression during the rocking process. An innovative RW with a curved interface is proposed to prevent interfacial corners from producing local damage, enhancing its earthquake resilient performance(ERP).The precast wall panel with a curved interface is assembled into an integral self-centering hybrid rocking wall(SCRW)by two post-tensioned unbonded prestressed tendons. Moreover, two ordinary energy dissipation steel rebars and two shear reinforcements are arranged to increase the energy dissipation capacity and lateral resistance. Two SCRW specimens and one monolithic reinforced concrete(RC)shear wall(SW)were tested under pseudo-static loading to compare the ERPs of the proposed SCRW and the SW,focusing on studying the effect of the curved interface on the SCRW.The key resilient performance of rocking effects, failure modes, and hysteretic properties of the SCRW were explored. The results show that nonlinear deformations of the SCRW are concentrated along the interface between the SCRW and the foundation, avoiding damage within the SCRW.The restoring force provided by the prestressed tendons can effectively realize self-centering capacity with small residual deformation, and the resilient performance of the SCRW is better than that of monolithic SW.In addition, the curved interface of the SCRW makes the rocking center change and move inward, partially relieving the stress concentration and crush of concrete. The rocking range of the rocking center is about 41.4%of the width of the SCRW. 展开更多

The degradation of the shear stress between pile-clay interface caused by undrained cyclic jacking affects the jacking force.A series of large displacement monotonic shear, cyclic shear and post-cyclic monotonic steel plate-clay interface shear te sts were performed under the constant normal load(CNL)condition to inve stigate the effects of normal stre ss,cyclic amplitude, and number of cycles on a steel plate-clay interface using the GDS multi-function interface shear tester.Based on the experimental results,in monotonic shear tests, change of shear stress took place in the specimen, the shear stress rapidly reached the peak value at shear displacement of 1 mm,and then abruptly decreased to the residual value. In cyclic shear te sts, accumulated displacement was a better parameter to describe the soil degradation characteristics, and the degradation degree of shear stress became greater with the increasing of normal stress and accumulated displacement.Shear stress in post-cyclic monotonic shear tests did not generate a peak value and was lower than that in monotonic shear tests under the same normal stress. The soil was completely disturbed and reached the residual strength when the cumulative displacement approached 6 m.An empirical equation to evaluate shear stress degradation mechanism was formulated and the procedure of parameter identification was presented. 展开更多

The bonding interface characteristic and shear strength of diffusion bonded Ti-17 titanium alloy at different bonding time were investigated. The results show that the average size of voids decreases while the amount of voids decreases after increasing to the maximum value with the increasing bonding time. The irregular void with a scraggly edge tends to an ellipse void with smooth surface and then changes to a tiny void with round shape. The grains across bonding interface occur at bonding time of 60 min. The shear strength of bond increases with increasing bonding time, and the highest shear strength of bond is 887.4 MPa at 60 min. The contribution of plastic deformation on the void closure and the increase of shear strength is significant even though the action time of plastic deformation is short. 展开更多

Shearing behavior and failure mechanism of bolt-grout interface are of great significance for load transfer capacity and design of rock bolting system. In this paper, direct shear tests on bolt-grout interfaces under constant normal load(CNL) conditions were conducted to investigate the effects of bolt profile(i.e.rib spacing and rib height) and grout mixture on the bolt-grout interface in terms of mechanical behaviors and failure modes.Test results showed that the peak shear strength and the deformation capacity of the bolt-grout interface are highly dependent on the bolt profile and grout mixture, suggesting that bolt performances can be optimized, which were unfortunately ignored in the previous studies.A new interface failure mode,i.e.'sheared-crush' mode, was proposed, which was characterized by progressive crush failure of the grout asperities between steel ribs during shearing. It was shown that the interface failure mode mainly depends on the normal stress level and rib spacing, compared with the rib height and grout mixture for the range of tested parameters in this study. 展开更多

The turbulence structures near a sheared air-water interface were experimentally investigated with the hydrogen bubble visualization technique. Surface shear was imposed by an airflow over the water flow which was kept free from surface waves. Results show that the wind shear has the main influence on coherent structures under air-water interfaces. Low- and high- speed streaks form in the region close to the interface as a result of the imposed shear stress. When a certain airflow velocity is reached, “turbulent spots” appear randomly at low-speed streaks with some characteristics of hairpin vortices. At even higher shear rates, the flow near the interface is dominated primarily by intermittent bursting events. The coherent structures observed near sheared air-water interfaces show qualitative similarities with those occurring in near-wall turbulence. However, a few distinctive phenomena were also observed, including the fluctuating thickness of the instantaneous boundary layer and vertical vortices in bursting processes, which appear to be associated with the characteristics of air-water interfaces. 展开更多

The Cr-plated coating inside a gun barrel can effectively improve the barrel’s erosion resistance and thus increase the service life. However, due to the cyclic thermal load caused by high-temperature gunpowder,micro-element damage tends to occur within the Cr coating/steel substrate interface, leading to a gradual deterioration in macro-mechanical properties for the material in the related region. In order to mimic this cyclic thermal load and, thereby, study the thermal erosion behavior of the Cr coating on the barrel’s inner wall,a laser emitter is utilized in the current study. With the help of in-situ tensile test and finite element simulation results,a shear stress distribution law of the Cr coating/steel substrate and a change law of the interface ultimate shear strength are identified.Studies have shown that the Cr coating/steel substrate interface’s ultimate shear strength has a significant weakening effect due to increasing temperature. In this study, the interfacial ultimate shear strength decreases from 2.57 GPa(no erosion)to 1.02 GPa(laser power is 160 W).The data from this experiment is employed to establish a Cr coating/steel substrate interface shear damage model. And this model is used to predict the flaking process of Cr coating by finite element method. The simulation results show that the increase of coating crack spacing and coating thickness will increase the service life of gun barrel. 展开更多

The location and geometry of large-scale asperity present at the foundation of concrete gravity dams and buttress dams affect the shear resistance of the concrete-rock interface. However, the parameters describing the frictional resistance of the interface usually do not account for these asperities. This could result in an underestimate of the peak shear stre ngth, which leads to significantly conservative design for new dams or unnecessary stability enhancing measures for existing ones. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of the location of first-order asperity on the peak shear strength of a concrete-rock interface under eccentric load and the model discrepancy associated with the commonly used rigid body methods for calculating the factor of safety(FS)against sliding. For this,a series of direct and eccentric shear tests under constant normal load(CNL)was carried out on concrete-rock samples. The peak shear strengths measured in the tests were compared in terms of asperity location and with the predicted values from analytical rigid body methods. The results showed that the large-scale asperity under eccentric load significantly affected the peak shear strength.Furthermore, unlike the conventional assumption of sliding or shear failure of an asperity in direct shear, under the effect of eccentric shear load,a tensile failure in the rock or in the concrete could occur, resulting in a lower shear strength compared with that of direct shear tests. These results could have important implications for assessment of the FS against sliding failure in the concrete-rock interface. 展开更多

In this work,we numerically study the structure of the turbulent/nonturbulent(T/NT)interface in a fully developed spatially evolving axisymmetric wake by means of direct numerical simulations. There is a continuous and contorted pure shear layer(PSL)adjacent to the outer edge of the T/NT interface. The local thickness of the PSLδ_(PSL)exhibits a wide range of scales(from the Kolmogorov scale to the Taylor microscale)and the conditional mean thickness<δ_(PSL)>I/η_(c)≈6 withη_(c)being the centerline Kolmogorov scale is the same as the viscous superlayer. In the viscous superlayer, the pure shear motions without rotation are overwhelmingly dominant. It is also demonstrated that the physics of the turbulent sublayer is closely related to the PSL with a large thickness.Another significant finding is that the time averaged area of the rotational regionA R,and the pure shear region<A_(S)>at different streamwise locations scale with the square of the wake-width b_(U)^(2).This study opens an avenue for a better understanding of the structures of the T/NT interface. 展开更多

Rock bolts have been widely used for stabilizing rock mass in geotechnical engineering. It is acknowledged that the bolt profiles have a sound influence on the support effect of the rock bolting system.Previous studies have proposed some optimal rib parameters(e.g.rib spacing);unfortunately, the interface shear behaviors are generally ignored. Therefore, determination of radial stress and radial displacement on the bolt-grout interface using traditional pull-out tests is not possible. The load-bearing capacity and deformation capacity vary as bolt profiles differ, suggesting that the support effect of the bolting system can be enhanced by optimizing bolt profiles. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of bolt profiles(with/without ribs, rib spacing, and rib height)on the shear behaviors between the rock bolt and grout material using direct shear tests.Thereby, systematic interfacial shear tests with different bolt profiles were performed under both constant normal load(CNL)and constant normal stiffness(CNS)boundary conditions. The results suggested that rib spacing has a more marked influence on the interface shear behavior than rib height does,in particular at the post-yield stage. The results could facilitate our understanding of bolt-grout interface shear behavior under CNS conditions, and optimize selection of rock bolts under in situ rock conditions. 展开更多

The grout-rock interfacial property is one of the key factors associated with the strength of grouted rock masses. In this study, direct shear tests and nanoindentation tests were adopted to investigate the mechanical properties of the grout-rock interface at both the macroscale and microscale. The cohesion of the cement specimens was higher than that of the grout-infilled joint specimens, while their internal friction angle was lower than that of the grout-infilled joint specimens.A“separation method”for identifying the different phases according to the qualitative and quantitative estimations was introduced, and the irregular interfacial transition zone(ITZ)thickness and elastic modulus were estimated. The ITZ thickness of the grout-infilled sandstone specimen ranged from 0 to 30μm,whereas it was within the range of 10-40μm for the grout-infilled mudstone specimen. The average elastic modulus of the ITZ in grout-infilled sandstone and mudstone specimens was approximately 58.2%and 54.1%lower than that of the bulk grout, respectively.Regarding the incidence of the rock type, the interlacing between the grout and sandstone was better developed. The ITZ with a higher porosity and lower modulus had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the grout-infilled specimens. 展开更多

Cushion is a layer of granular materials between the raft and the ground. The shear behavior of the interface between the cushion and the raft may influence the seismic performance of the superstructure. In order to quantify such influences, horizontal shear tests on the interfaces between different cushion materials and concrete raft under monotonic and cyclic loading were carried out. The vertical pressure P_v, material type and cushion thickness h_c were taken as variables. Conclusions include: 1) under monotonic loading, P_v is the most significant factor; the shear resistance P_(hmax) increases as P_v increases, but the normalized factor of resistance μ_n has an opposite tendency; 2) for the materials used in this study, μ_n varies from 0.40 to 0.70, the interface friction angle δ_s varies from 20° to 35°, while u_(max) varies from 3 mm to 15 mm; 3) under cyclic loading, the interface behavior can be abstracted as a "three-segment" back-bone curve, the main parameters include μ_n, the displacement u_1 and stiffness K_1 of the elastic stage, the displacement u_2 and stiffness K_2 of the plastic stage; 4) by observation and statistical analysis, the significance of different factors, together with values of K_1, K_2 and μ_n have been obtained. 展开更多

The hydraulic fracturing is still an effective technology for the exploitation of coalbed methane (CBM). However, after the hydraulic fracturing operation, the high water cut or sudden water flooding of CBM well usually occurs due to upward migration of bottom water, which is called water channeling (water inrush). This problem has been severely limiting the hydraulic fracturing effect of CBM wells. Some studies show that the aquifuge and cement paste themselves will not crush under hydraulic fracturing pressure. Water channeling often occurs at cement- aquifuge interface (CAI). 展开更多

A model is developed based on the time-related thermal diffusion equations to investigate the effects of twodimensional shear flow on the stability of a crystal interface in the supercooled melt of a pure substance. Similar to the three-dimensional shear flow as described in our previous paper, the two-dimensional shear flow can also be found to reduce the growth rate of perturbation amplitude. However, compared with the case of the Laplace equation for a steady-state thermal diffusion field, due to the existence of time partial derivatives of the temperature fields in the diffusion equation the absolute value of the gradients of the temperature fields increases, therefore destabilizing the interface. The circular interface is more unstable than in the case of Laplace equation without time partial derivatives. The critical stability radius of the crystal interface increases with shearing rate increasing. The stability effect of shear flow decreases remarkably with the increase of melt undercooling. 展开更多

On the basis of the theory of elasto^plasticity and fracture mechanics, the shear beam model for the solution of interface failure was presented. The concept of `cohesive crack' was adopted to describe the constitutive behavior of the cohesive interfacial layer. A filter cake is often formed between soil and concrete during casting concrete in the ground, such as constructions of diaphragm walls and bored piles. The present study aims to investigate the effect of the filter cake on the shear behavior of the sand-concrete pile interface.A series of sand-concrete interface direct shear tests were performed with a large-direct shear apparatus while considering different roughness(I=0,10,20 and 30 mm)and filter cake thickness(Δh=0,5 and 10 mm).For a smooth interface without a filter cake, the shear stress-horizontal displacement curves showed a“softening”response. The peak shear strength and friction angle decreased exponentially with increasing theΔh.Whereas, for a rough interface withΔh=5 or 10 mm,the shear stress-horizontal displacement curves presented a“hardening”response. The peak strength,as well as friction angle, decreased linearly with increasing theΔh.Moreover,a critical roughness I_(cr)of 10 mm was observed in the tests without a filter cake. The interface shear strength initially increased with increasing I but gradually decreased when the I exceeded I_(cr).In addition, the filter cake could reduce the roughness sensitivity on shear strength. 展开更多

This work aims to describe the behavior of the interface using the method of load transfer between fiber and matrix in a composite material. Our contribution is to track the Evolution of the thermomechanical behavior by establishing a new mathematical model that describes the variation of shear stress along the interface. This model has been implemented in code in C++. The results revealed that the shear of the interface increases with temperature. This increase is partly due to the difference in expansion coefficient between fiber and matrix. The composite studied is T300/914;Carbon-Epoxy. 展开更多
