Assessing Factors Influencing Solar Energy Adoption among Small and Medium Enterprises in Mzuzu City, Malawi

One of the many renewable energy sources that offer advantages is solar energy, which also lowers energy prices and promotes environmental sustainability and energy security. Despite these advantages, various barriers, such as installation costs, have prevented small and medium-sized enterprises from investigating this invention. Malawi has a significant energy shortfall such that most businesses have been hindered from their profit maximization goals. The “Photovoltaic systems” (PV) that transform sunlight into electricity are the subject of this study. This type of solar energy system is situated on the building’s roof and generally produces electricity for businesses and even homes. Solar energy offers a great impact to small and medium enterprises in Mzuzu city with a cost-effective and dependable alternative to energy that has the potential to change the game. Therefore the aim of the study was to identify factors that encourage the adoption of solar energy among small medium enterprises in the city of Mzuzu city. And to identify some of barriers faced when adopting solar energy among small and medium enterprises in the city of Mzuzu. The research approach employed in the study was a survey. A survey is a type of research methodology in which primary data is gathered from a sample using a questionnaire. When information is to be gathered from a wider sample, a survey is employed. A bigger sample size was needed in this study in order to facilitate hypothesis testing. It is advised to apply a logical approach while using the survey. The survey utilized a five-point Likert scale. The study used convenience sampling to select study participants. The sample size in this study was determined using Cochran’s sample size formula. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel were used for statistical analysis. About 97.2% of the participants were aware of solar as a source of energy compared to 2.8 % who were unaware. The majority of participants use solar energy for lighting only, seconded by those who use electricity. The least number of participants use solar energy for cooling only. The majority of participants 21.5% indicated partnership and collaboration as the most motivating factor for the adoption of solar energy. This was followed by technical expertise 19.1 % the least number of participants 10.8% expressed that policy and regulatory frameworks were associated with the adoption of solar energy. This study found that there are no statistically significant factors influencing barriers to the adoption of solar energy. The price of solar energy adoption was identified as the least factor associated with the acceptance or rejection of solar energy. Nonetheless, the reasons given by the homes that had embraced solar technology aligned with the findings of other studies. This survey also found that although the public was aware of solar energy, and technology, there were still a number of factors that mattered, especially for non-adopters. 展开更多

The results of a heat-conduction experiment with a central point source in a sand barrel shows that the temperature of the heat source increase much faster in sand saturated with oil and air (dry sand) than in water sand. During cooling the temperature of the central heat source goes down slower in oil- or air-saturated sands than in water sands. Based on the theory of heat-conduction in porous media and the experimental results, we developed a new heat-conduction logging technique which utilizes an artificial heat source (dynamite charge or electric heater) to heat up target forma- tions in the borehole and then measure the change of temperature at a later time. Post-frac oil production is shown to be directly proportional to the size of the temperature anomaly when other reservoir parameters are fairly consistent. The method is used to evaluate potential oil production for marginal reservoirs in the FY formation in Song-Liao basin of China. 展开更多

Propagation of large-scale solar wind events in the outer heliosphere from a numerical MHD simulation 被引量:2

Voyager 1 occasionally detected sudden jumps of the local interstellar magnetic field strength since its heliopause crossing in August 2012.These events were believed to be associated with outward propagating solar wind shocks originating in the inner heliosphere.Here we investigate the correlation between interstellar shocks and large-scale solar wind events by means of numerical MHD simulation.The solar wind is simplified as a symmetric flow near the equatorial plane,and the interstellar neutrals are treated as a constant flow with a fixed density distribution along the upwind direction of the local interstellar medium.The charge exchanges between the solar wind plasma and the interstellar neutrals are taken into account.At a heliocentric distance of 1 AU,the solar wind data from OMNI,STEREO A and B during the period between 2010 and 2017 are used as the inner boundary conditions to drive the simulation.The simulation results showed that the solar wind gradually merges into large-scale structures as the radial distance increases,consistent with observations by New Horizons.After propagating into the inner heliosheath,the shocks are fully developed and the corresponding pressure pulses roughly agree with the observations by Voyager 2 in the inner heliosheath.The arrival of the shocks beyond the heliopause is estimated and found to be consistent with the observed signatures of interstellar shocks by Voyager 1.The possible origins of interstellar shocks in the inner heliosheath are discussed based on the simulation. 展开更多

Highly thermo-conductive aqueous medium is a crucial premise to demonstrate high-performance thermal-related applications.Graphene has the diamond comparable thermal conductivity,while the intrinsic two-dimensional reality will result in strong anisotropic thermal conductivity and wrinkles or even crumples that significantly sacrifices its inherent properties in practical applications.One strategy to overcome this is to use three-dimensional(3D)architecture of graphene.Herein,3D graphene structure with covalent-bonding nanofins(3D-GS-CBF)is proposed,which is then used as the filler to demonstrate effective aqueous medium.The thermal conductivity and thermal conductivity enhancement efficiency of 3D-GS-CBF(0.26 vol%)aqueous medium can be as high as 2.61 W m-1 K-1 and 1300%,respectively,around six times larger than highest value of the existed aqueous mediums.Meanwhile,3D-GS-CBF can be stable in the solution even after 6 months,addressing the instability issues of conventional graphene networks.A multiscale modeling including non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and heat conduction model is applied to interpret experimental results.3D-GS-CBF aqueous medium can largely improve the solar vapor evaporation rate(by 1.5 times)that are even comparable to the interfacial heating system;meanwhile,its cooling performance is also superior to commercial coolant in thermal management applications. 展开更多

WUM is the only cosmological model in existence that is consistent with this Fundamental Law. The Nebular hypothesis does not solve Internal Heating and Diversity problems for all Planets and Moons in Solar system—why the actual mean surface temperature of them is higher than their effective temperature calculated based on the Sun’s heat for them and how could each one be so different if all of them came from the same nebula? 大规模新能源基地经特高压直流送出是我国未来新能源消纳的重要形式,合理优化特高压直流中长期运行方式,是提高新能源基地外送消纳能力的重要基础。提出了基于时序生产模拟的大规模新能源基地经特高压直流送出系统中长期运行方式优化方... 大规模新能源基地经特高压直流送出是我国未来新能源消纳的重要形式,合理优化特高压直流中长期运行方式,是提高新能源基地外送消纳能力的重要基础。提出了基于时序生产模拟的大规模新能源基地经特高压直流送出系统中长期运行方式优化方法。首先,考虑生产模拟计算准确性与复杂度的要求,建立了不同类型光热电站、火电机组和储能电站的聚合运行模型;然后,考虑特高压直流运行模式、灵活调节性能和受端电网负荷调峰需求,建立了不含整数变量的特高压直流运行模型。最后,建立了以新能源最大化外送消纳为目标,考虑各类电源与特高压直流运行约束的中长期运行方式优化模型,提出了基于逐周计算的全年8760h生产模拟计算方法。算例基于含风电/光伏/光热/火电/储能的大规模新能源基地开展测试,结果表明所提出方法能够优化特高压直流年/月运行曲线,实现新能源的最大化外送消纳,计算准确性与效率能够满足工程实用性需求。 展开更多

In organic solar cells(OSCs),it is an effective way to improve the power conversion efficiency(PCE)by adding a guest component with appropriate absorption and energy levels in the host system.Herein,a new nonfullerene acceptor(NFA)named TBF-2Cl was developed by the strategy of expanding theπconjugated core of 2,2’-(((4,4,9,9-tetrahexyl-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b’]dithiophene-2,7-diyl)bis(methaneylylidene))bis(5,6-dichloro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile(IDT-4Cl)with two benzene rings.With increase of benzene units,TBF-2Cl exhibits higher lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(LUMO)level of-3.75 eV than that of one benzene unit based NFA IDT-4Cl and fluorene core based NFA F-2Cl,which facilitates enhancing the open-circuit voltage(V_(oc))of ternary devices.Moreover,TBF-2Cl film shows a medium optical bandgap with the absorption range from 500-800 nm,being well complementary with the wide bandgap polymer donor D18 and narrow bandgap NFA CH-6F.Accordingly,a remarkable PCE of 18.92%with a high short-circuit current density(J_(sc))of 27.40 mA·cm^(-2),a fill factor(FF)of 0.749,especially an outstanding V_(oc) of 0.922 V was achieved for the optimal ternary device based on D18:TBF-2Cl:CH-6F,surpassing the binary counterpart(17.08%).The findings provide insight into the development of new guest acceptors for obtaining more efficient OSCs. 展开更多
