As one of the greatest essayist of the 19th century,Charles Lamb's works is inseparable from his tragic life. This article attempts to analyze the stylistic features of Lamb's Dream Children and holds that its subtle structure and a dream-like combination of facts and fiction, pathos and humor are two contributing factors to its stylistic appeal. Thus, the author's attitude towards life as reflected in the lines, sorrowful smile constitutes the core for the essay's irresistible charm. 展开更多

River Elegy(Heshang)is a Chinese TV documentary aired on Chinese Central Television(CCTV)in 1988.Its provocative condemnation of the thousand-year-old'yellow civilization'(huangse wenming黄色文明)of China stirred up a tornado of controversies among Chinese audiences.Intense debates and reflections on the documentary both inside and outside China have made Heshang one of the most intriguing'phenomena'in contemporary Chinese culture. This paper proposes a new perspective to read Heshang, tackling it as a historically situated narrative that embodies a post-Mao intellectual discourse of the national sentiment. In the new context of post-Mao China, what does Heshang tell of the relative positionalities of the intellectuals, the masses, and the state in the frame of Chinese modernity? How do we dialectically understand the documentary’s national pedagogy of reform in relation to the elusive agency of the low-quality Chinese masses? With these questions in mind,I revisit Heshang’s claim of weak political agency as an embodiment of low people quality.I argue that the national sentiment of the consciousness of sorrow and worry(忧患意识)simultaneously suggests and subverts the national pedagogy of reform promoted by the Heshang intellectuals. 展开更多

In a time of the global market economy, if one wants to live harmoniously together with nature or living environment, he should not think with a theoretical mode of dualist contradiction but that of harmony and coexistence such as "wholeness of man and nature". To illustrate this point, this paper thinks The Woman Warrior and Ballad of Eternal Sorrow are two significant texts: Ballad of Eternal Sorrow tells an ordinary, self-respecting, and life-respecting story of WANG Qi-yao and the girls like her as well as the city Shanghai. They blend into one harmonious whole: The city is like the girls and the girls match the city. Likewise, The Woman Warrior highlights the significance of naturc on the girl narrator's epiphany and healthy growth. The narrator comes to understand that paradoxes are the basic existent condition of human beings and so what she needs to do is to be magnanimous and balanceable in accepting these paradoxes. 展开更多

It may be argued that one of the recurring themes in the fiction of Toni Morrison is the problem of emotional suffering. Indeed, a line of her characters endure a series of traumatic past experiences, the consequences of which are strongly echoed in their present lives and often foreshadow their future. Thus, this article discusses some of the characteristic literary-fantastic manifestations of grief and grieving in Morrison's novels, seen as internal and external expressions of the protagonists' mental pain. First, the text outlines the major grief-generating conditions for Morrison's heroes in general, and then it focuses on the various modes in which their feelings of grief and grieving are communicated. Second, the study exposes the characters' psychological strife and the influence it exerts both on themselves and their surroundings. Third and last, the paper concludes with an attempt to establish some typical patterns of grief and grieving common to Morrison's fictional figures. In order to reflect a variety of grief-stricken individuals populating Morrison's world, the analysis examines a group of three female characters. Taken all together, the selected examples serve to exhibit the complexity of the problem in question, as well as to illustrate the different shades of human sorrow. 展开更多

This paper examines the visual representation of the famous poem The Song of Everlasting Sorrow in modern China.Painted by Li Yishi in 1929,this sequential set of paintings was based on the Tang poet Bai Juyi's poem, written under the same title.First shown at the National Art Exhibition in Shanghai and then published as an illustrated book in 1932,Li's work rekindled public imagination of the tragic romance.Li's choice of subject, format,as well as style and its mixed reviews raise crucial questions regarding the notion of realism and the authenticity of historical representation. This paper argues that Li's work revealed new transmedia aesthetics and cross-cultural fascination with China's past that shaped the cultural identity of East Asia in the early twentieth century. 展开更多

This article examines the effect and affect of historical representations in wartime Chinese theater and cinema,as well as the interplay between the two media. With the burgeoning of late Ming stories on stage and on screen, the fall of the Ming became a“chosen trauma”that connects the nation's past with its historical present. However the traumatic fate of the nation was never the actual subject of representation, but served to enhance the affective power of tragic-heroic figures.Focusing on A Ying's Sorrow for the Fall of the Ming, one of the most popular wartime historical plays, the paper studies the narrative structure, performance style and adaptation strategy of the play to demonstrate how patriotic spirit was foregrounded as the key to national survival. It was through the audience's resonation with the characters'passionate speech on stage and on screen that individuals, emotional attachment to the nation was consolidated, both horizontally across space and vertically through history. 展开更多

But teaching methods reflect the economic and cultural level of society. As society develops, the traditional Chinese patriarchal method to educate children encounters many objections. However, when parents treat their children democratically, children are spoiled to different degrees and "Little Emperors" appear, which proves the patriarchal method still exists in disguised form. 展开更多
