The drag red...Experiments in an open flume model and spillway tunnel model were carried out using drag reduction techniques. Two drag reduction techniques were adopted in the experiments: polymer addition and coating. The drag reduction effect of a polyacrylamide (PAM) solution and dimethyl silicone oil coating were studied in the flume model experiments, and the results were analyzed. Experiments were then carded out with a model of the Xilnodu Hydropower Station, the second largest dam in China. In order to reduce the resistance, the spillway tunnels were internally coated with dimethyl silicone oil. This is the first time that these drag reduction techniques have been applied to so large a hydraulic model. The experimental results show that the coating technique can effectively increase flood discharge. The outlet velocity and the jet trajectory distance are also increased, which enhances the energy dissipation of the spillway tunnel.展开更多
Calculation grid and turbulence model for numerical simulating pressure fluctuations in a high-speed train tunnel are studied through the comparison analysis of numerical simulation and moving model test.Compared the ...Calculation grid and turbulence model for numerical simulating pressure fluctuations in a high-speed train tunnel are studied through the comparison analysis of numerical simulation and moving model test.Compared the waveforms and peak-peak values of pressure fluctuations between numerical simulation and moving model test,the structured grid and the SST k-ωturbulence model are selected for numerical simulating the process of high-speed train passing through the tunnel.The largest value of pressure wave amplitudes of numerical simulation and moving model test meet each other.And the locations of the largest value of the initial compression and expansion wave amplitude of numerical simulation are in agreement with that of moving model test.The calculated pressure at the measurement point fully conforms to the propagation law of compression and expansion waves in the tunnel.展开更多

The sediments inflow in the Tarbela reservoir has resulted in reduction in water storage capacity. In addition damage to the tunnels, power generating units and ultimately to the plant equipment by the sediments particles carried by water is observed. To the authors knowledge, to-date no comprehensive simulation studies are performed for this dam reservoir and tunnels, especially at present when sediment delta and presence of sediment particles in the tunnels is observed to a reasonable extent. The aim of this study is to investigate the damage to the Tunnel 2 of the Tarbela Dam with and without considering the affect of sediment particles for one way and two way/full coupling during summer, winter and average seasons, using turbulent flows of water. Numerically calculated erosion results are compared with the experimental erosion results. Pressure, velocity and erosion rate density results are discussed in detail.展开更多
