The scope and limitations of specific termination reactions with a variety of electrophilic species are illustrated for carbonation, hydroxyethylation, amination, and sulfonation. The methodology of using substituted 1,1-diphenylethylenes to provide a general, quantitative functionalization procedure is outlined and illustrated with examples of amine and phenol end-functionalization. A methodology is described for the synthesis of functionalized, star-branched copolymers with compositionally heterogeneous arms of controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution using 1, 3-bis(1-pbenylethenyl) benzene.展开更多

The inclusion complexes (ICs) formed between the PCL polymers and α-CD were characterized by ^1H-NMR, DSC, TGA, WAXD, and FT-1R, respectively. Both branch ann number and molecular weight of the PCL polymers have apparent effect on the stoichiometry (CL:CD, mol:mol) of these ICs. All these analytical results indicate that the branch arms of the PCL polymers are incorporated into the hydrophobic α-CD cavities and their original crystalline properties are completely suppressed. Moreover, the inclusion complexation between two-ann linear or four-ann star-shaped PCL polymers and α-CD not only enhances the thermal stability of the guest PCL polymers but also improves that of α-CD.展开更多

The structure of PEO membrane was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). The thermal property and inter-segmental distance of polymer chain were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction, respectively. The density was determined by hydrostatic weighing method. The gas permeability, solubility and diffusivity of CO_2 and H_2 were investigated in the star-like PEO membranes. The relationship between gas permeation performances and physical properties was also discussed. The membrane exhibits outstanding CO_2 permeability(about 9.7×10^(-11) cm^3(STP) cm/cm^2/s/Pa) and CO_2/H_2 selectivity(about 11) compared with other membranes.展开更多

The structure of PLGA-β-CD copolymer was confirmed with 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and FT-IR spectra. Albumin as a model peptide drug was encapsulated within nanoparticles made of PLGA-β-CD with a modified double emulsion method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photomicrographs showed that the nanoparticles have the mean diameter within the range of 80 - 210 nm. Also they were almost spherical in shape. Effects of the experimental parameters, such as copolymer composition, copolymer concentration, and reaction temperature, on particular size and encapsulation efficiency were investigated.展开更多

The effects of arm number and branching on viscosity of the polymer aqueous solution and mechanical strengths of the formed experimental cement were evaluated. It was found that the higher the arm number and the more the branching, the lower the viscosity of the polymer solution as well as the mechanical strengths of the formed cement. It was also found that the experimental cement exhibited significantly higher mechanical strengths than commercial Fuji II LC. The experimental cement was 51% in CS, 55% in compressive modulus, 118% in DTS, 82% in FS, 18% in FT and 85% in KHN higher than Fuji II LC. The experimental cement was only 6.7% of abrasive and 10% of attritional wear depths of Fuji II LC in each wear cycle. It appears that this novel experimental cement is a clinically attractive dental restorative and may potentially be used for high-wear and high-stress-bearing site restorations.展开更多

Star-shaped C-60-Poly(styrene-maleic anhydride) was successful prepared. The multilayer thin films have been fabricated on mica with diazoresin as the cationic polyelectrolyte and hydrolyzed star-shaped C-60-poly(styrene-maleic anhydride) as the anionic polyelectrolyte via self-assembly technique. The crosslinking structure of the films is formed from the conversion of ionic bond to covalent bond after UV irradiation. AFM/FFM investigations provide insights into the roughness and frictional properties on a microscale. The roughness depends strongly on the number of film layers in the case of C-60-containing films. The frictional forces of the films exhibited a well behaved non-linear relationship in response to the change of applied load. It supports the prediction of enhanced load-bearing property Of C60-containing thin films.展开更多
