The effects of starch sources on the behaviors of starch matrices and on the rates of herbicides released from the matrices were studied for slow release. The starches considered include native corn starch, wheat starch, potato starch and cassava starch. The matrices were prepared through encapsulating 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic or 2,4,5 trichlorophenoxyacetic acids as model herbicides with hot-gelatinized starch pastes. The encapsulation was evaluated in terms of herbicide content, swellability, encapsulation efficiency, and release rate. The results show that starch sources play an important role on the matrix behaviors and on release rates. The rate of 2,4-D released follows the order: wheat starch 〈 potaot starch 〈 corn starch 〈 cassava starch. And for the rate of 2,4,5-T, this order is nearly the same only with an exception that the late two kinds of starch are similar. It is also demonstrated that herbicides with different water solubility show different release rates, no matter what type of starch is used as the matrices. 展开更多

Background: With increasing health awareness among consumers, the demand for healthier, tastier, higher quality and nutritional value pork is increasing. It has been shown that different dietary starch sources can alter the carcass traits and meat quality. However, research on the effects of different starch sources with clear different amylose/amylopectin ratio on the amino acid and fatty acid composition in Longissimus thoracis(L. thoracis) muscle of pigs is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different dietary starch sources on carcass traits, meat quality, muscle amino acid and fatty acid composition, and the mRNA expression levels of genes involved in lipid metabolism and muscle fiber characteristics in finishing pigs. A total of 72 Duroc × Landrace × Large White barrows were randomly allocated to 3 different dietary treatment groups with 8 replicate pens/group and 3 pigs per pen.Tapioca starch(TS), corn starch(CS), and pea starch(PS), with amylose/amylopectin ratio of 0.11, 0.25, and 0.44,respectively, were used as their dietary starch sources for 40 days.Results: Results showed that the PS diet significantly increased(P < 0.05) the final body weight, average daily gain,loin-eye area, and fat-free lean index compared with the TS diet, but significantly decreased(P < 0.05) the feed to gain ratio and backfat thickness. Compared with the TS diet, PS diet also increased(P < 0.05) the pH45 min, marbling scores, the content of intramuscular fat and inosine monophosphate in the L. thoracis, and decreased(P < 0.05) the drip loss and shear force. In addition, compared with the TS diet, PS diet increased(P < 0.05) the proportions of flavor amino acids, DHA, EPA, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA) in the L. thoracis compared with TS diet,but decreased(P < 0.05) the ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFA. Furthermore, compared with the TS diet, PS diet also upregulated(P < 0.05) the lipogenic genes(FAS, LPL, SCD, ACCα) and myosin heavy-chain(MyHC)-IIa mRNA expression levels compared with the TS diet, but downregulated(P < 0.05) the CPT1 B and MyHC-IIb mRNA levels.Conclusions: In conclusion, these results provided compelling evidence that the different dietary starch source altered the carcass traits, meat flavor and quality in finishing pigs, and consumption of a diet with higher amylose/amylopectin ratio results in the production of a healthy, higher quality, and nutritional value pork. 展开更多

Effects of Dietary Starch Source on Nutrient and Energy Absorption via the Portal Vein of Growing Pigs

Four crossbred (Duroc x Landrace x Yorkshire) boars, weighing an average of 22.40 ± 1.08 kg and fitted with permanent catheters in their portal and mesenteric veins as well as their carotid artery,were utilized in a 4 × 4 latin square design experiment in order to investigate the effects of different starch sources (maize ,brown rice, sticky rice, and resistant starch) on the absorption of energy sources through the portal vein. Portal blood flow averaged 30.68, 28.40, 29.99, and 30. 12 mL/min per kg BW for pigs fed the maize, brown rice, sticky rice, and resistant starch diets, respectively, and did not dif- fer (P 〉 0.05) between treatments. The absorptions of glucose, plasma ammonia, and total amino acids were significantly lower (P 〈 0.05 ) in pigs fed the resistant starch diet than pigs fed the other starch sources. In contrast, significantly ( P 〈 0.05 ) higher amounts of propionate and total volatile fatty acids were absorbed from the portal vein of pigs fed resistant starch than pigs fed diets based on maize, brown rice, or sticky rice. In addition, significantly (P 〈 0.05) more lactic acid was absorbed from the portal vein by pigs fed the sticky rice diet than pigs fed the other three diets. The energy absorbed from the portal vein in the form of glucose and amino-N as well as the total energy absorbed was significantly (P 〈 0.05) lower in pigs fed the resistant starch diet than pigs fed the other three starch sources. In contrast, the amount of energy absorbed in the form of volatile fatty acids was significantly (P 〈 0.05 ) higher in pigs fed resistance starch than pigs fed the other three starch sources. The total energy absorbed through the portal vein as a percentage of the gross energy and digestible energy consumed in pigs fed maize were 50.8% and 54.6%, respectively, which were significantly (P 〈 0.05 ) higher than the values in pigs fed resistant starch (41.5% and 46.6% respectively). The results indicate that energy is absorbed in different forms and with different utilization efficiencies in the digestive tract of pigs as a result of feeding different starch sources. Starch sources supplying most of their energy in the form of glucose had higher energy utilization efficiencies, while starch sources supplying most of their energy in the form of volatile fatty acids or lactic acid had lower energy utilization efficiencies. 展开更多

Nitrogen removal from ammonium-containing wastewater was conducted using polylactic acid (PLA)/ starch blends as carbon source and carrier for fimctional bacteria. The exclusive and interactive influences of operating parameters (i.e., temperature, pH, stirring rate, and PLA-to-starch ratio (PLA proportion)) on nitrification (Y1), denitrification (Y2), and COD release rates (Y3) were investigated through response surface methodology. Experimental results indicated that nitrogen removal could be successfully achieved in the PLA/starch blends through simultaneous mtnncatlon anti clenltnncatlon. The carbon release rate of the blends was controllable. The sensitivity of Y1, Y2, and Y3 to different operating parameters also differed. The sequence for each response was as follows: for Y1, pH 〉 stirring rate 〉 PLA proportion 〉 temperature; for Y2, PH 〉 PLA proportion 〉.temperature.〉 stirring rate; and for Y3, stirring rate 〉pH 〉 PLA proportion 〉 temperature. In this study, the following optimum conditions were observed: temperature, 32.0℃; pH 7.7; stirring rate, 200.0 r · min^-1 and PLA proportion 0.4. Under these conditions Y1 Y2 and Y3 were 134.0 μg-N·g-blend^-1·h^-1, 160.9μg-N-g-blend^-1·h^-1, and 7.6 × 10^3 μg-O·g-blend^-1·h^-1, respectively. These results suggested that the PLA/starch blends may be an ideal packing material for nitrogen removal. 展开更多
