The characteristic plasma β (the ratio between gas pressure and magnetic pressure) is taken to be so small (β = 10-4) that the magnetic field is close to being force-free. The system as a whole is then let evolve quasi-statically with a slow increase of either the annular magnetic flux or the axial magnetic flux of the rope, and the total magnetic energy of the system grows accordingly. It is found that there exists an energy threshold: the flux rope sticks to the solar surface in equilibrium if the magnetic energy of the system is below the threshold, whereas it loses equilibrium if the threshold is exceeded. The energy threshold is found to be larger than that of the corresponding fully-open magnetic field by a factor of nearly 1.08 irrespective as to whether the background field is completely closed or partly open, or whether the magnetic energy is enhanced by an increase of annular or axial flux of the rope. This gives an example showing that a force-free magnetic field may have an energy larger than the corresponding open field energy if part of the field lines is allowed to be detached from the solar surface. The implication of such a conclusion in coronal mass ejections is briefly discussed and some comments are made on the maximum energy of force-free magnetic fields.展开更多

We have reprocessed the archival data from both observatories and we combined the output products with all the published observations of 31 MC pulsars with Ps 〈 100 s in an attempt to investigate the faintest X-ray emission states of these objects that occur when accretion to the polar caps proceeds at the smallest possible rates. These states determine the so-called propeller lines of the accreting pulsars and yield information about the magnitudes of their surface magnetic fields. We have found that the faintest states of the pulsars segregate into five discrete groups which obey to a high degree of accuracy the theoretical relation between spin period and X-ray luminosity. So the entire population of these pulsars can be described by just five propeller lines and the five corresponding magnetic moments (0.29, 0.53, 1.2, 2.9 and 7.3, in units of 1030 G cma).展开更多

Using the phase field method to capture the interface of two phases, the geometric deformation and dynamics of a pair of coaxial vertical rising bubbles under the applied uniform magnetic field in the vertical direction were investigated. The correctness of results is verified by mass conservation method and the comparison of the existing results. The results show that the applied uniform magnetic field can effectively shorten the distance between the leading bubble and the trailing bubble, the time of bubbles coalescence, and increase the velocity of bubbles coalescence. Within a certain range, as the intensity of the applied uniform magnetic field increases, the velocity of bubbles coalescence is proportional to the intensity of the magnetic field, and the time of bubbles coalescence is inversely proportional to the intensity of the magnetic field.展开更多

This spectrum function, besides some modifications in the coefficients of the resonant term, contains also a non-resonant term which is inversely proportional to the square of the magnetic field. Based on this spectrum function, the hardening of thermal photons through inverse Compton scattering by relativistic electron beams on the surface of a strongly magnetized neutron star is investigated. Two new features are found. First, there is a maximum scattered photon energy for a given resonant scattering, beyond which resonance disappears. This maximum depends on the electron energy and the magnetic field, but is independent of the incident photon energy. Second, beyond each resonant scattering, there is a high-energy tail, resulting from non-resonant scattering. It is also found that all the tails have a common upper limit which is the highest scattered photon energy for the given incident photon and electron energies. These two new features are absent in the Monte Carlo simulations and therefore, may have physical implications for y-ray emissions.展开更多

However, raw photospheric magnetograms contain magnetic forces and small-scale noises, and fail to be consistent with the force-free assumption of NLFFF models. The procedure for removing the forces and noises in observed data is called preprocessing. In this paper, we extend the preprocessing code of Jiang & Feng to spherical coordinates for a full sphere. We first smooth the observed data with Gaussian smoothing, and then split the smoothed magnetic field into a potential field and a non-potential field. The potential part is computed by a numerical potential field model, and the non-potential part is prepro- cessed using an optimization method to minimize the magnetic forces and magnetic torques. Applying the code to synoptic charts of the vector magnetic field from SDO/HMI, we find it can effectively reduce the noises and forces, and improve the quality of data for a better input which will be used for NLFFF extrapolations applied to the global corona.展开更多

Up to the present, the extrapolation of the magnetic field from boundary data has been the primary way to obtain fully three-dimensional magnetic information about the corona. As a result, the ability to reliably recover the coronal magnetic flux rope is important for coronal field extrapolation. In this paper, our coronal field extrapolation code is examined with an analytical magnetic flux rope model proposed by Titov & D6moulin, which consists of a bipolar magnetic configuration holding a semi-circular line-tied flux rope in force-free equilibrium. By only using the vector field at the bottom boundary as input, we test our code with the model in a representative range of parameter space and find that the model field can be reconstructed with high accuracy. In particular, the magnetic topological interfaces formed between the flux rope and the surrounding arcade, i.e., the "hyperbolic flux tube" and "bald patch separatrix surface," are also reliably reproduced. By this test, we demonstrate that our CESE-MHD-NLFFF code can be applied to recovering the magnetic flux rope in the solar corona as long as the vector magnetogram satisfies the force-free constraints.展开更多

From the photospheric magnetic field observed by SDO/HMI, we find there are indeed magnetic BPs on the polarity inversion lines (PILs) which match parts of the flare ribbons. From the 3D coronal magnetic field derived from an MHD relaxation model constrained by the vector magnetograms, we find strikingly good agreement of the BP separatrix surface (BPSS) footpoints with the flare ribbons, and the BPSS itself with the hot flaring loop system. Moreover, the triggering of the BP flare can be attributed to a small flux emergence under the lobe of the BPSS, and the relevant change of coronal magnetic field through the flare is reproduced well by the pre-flare and post-flare MHD solutions, which match the corresponding pre- and post-flare AIA observations, respectively. Our work contributes to the study of non-typical flares that constitute the majority of solar flares but which cannot be explained by the standard flare model.展开更多

On one hand, the interpolation for calculating the Voigt function is not smooth, which may occasionally cause the iteration process to converge to different minima although they are very close to initial values. This problem can be solved by a smoother interpolation. On the other hand, in order to improve the performance of this program, we have tried to abandon the randomly-jump-out strategy and set the initial value properly to avoid non-global minima. The resulting method costs only 1//4 of the computational time, and will be very competitive when the users are only interested in the vectorial magnetic fields and the velocities along the line of sight.展开更多

Different prediction models are constructed on the basis of extracted predictors from a pool of observation databases. The outputs of the base models are normal- ized first because these established models extract predictors from many data resources using different prediction methods. Then weighted integration of the base models is used to develop a multi-model integrated model (MIM). The weight set that single models assign is optimized by a genetic algorithm. Seven base models and data from Solar and Heliospheric Observatory/Michelson Doppler Imager lon- gitudinal magnetograms are used to construct the MIM, and then its performance is evaluated by cross validation. Experimental results showed that the MIM outperforms any individual model in nearly every data group, and the richer the diversity of the base models, the better the performance of the MIM. Thus, integrating more diversified models, such as an expert system, a statistical model and a physical model, will greatly improve the performance of the MIM.展开更多

In this paper, we identify a magnetic CV (CXOGSG J215544.4+380116) from the Chandra archive data. The X-ray light curves show a significant period of 14.1 ks, and the X-ray spectra can be described by a multi-temperature hot thermal plasma, suggesting the source is a magnetic CV. The broad dip in the X-ray light curve is due to the eclipse of the primary magnetic pole, and the additional dip in the bright phase of the soft and medium bands may be caused by the accretion stream crossing our line of sight to the primary pole. Follow-up optical spectra show features of an M2-M4 dwarf dominating the red band and a WD which is responsible for the weak upturn in the blue band. The mass (~ 0.4 34⊙) and radius (~0.4 R⊙) for the M dwarf are obtained using CV evolution models and empirical relations between the orbital period and the mass/radius. The estimated low X-ray luminosity and accretion rate may suggest the source is a low-accretion-rate polar. In addition, Very Large Array observations reveal a possible radio counterpart to the X-ray source, but with a low significance. Further radio observations with high quality are needed to confirm the radio counterpart and explore the properties of this binary system.展开更多

The introduction of transverse structuring into models for the corona modifies the behavior of MHD waves through processes such as dispersion and mode coupling. Exploiting our understanding of MHD waves with the diagnostic tool of coronal seismology relies upon the development of sufficiently detailed models to account for all the features in observations. The development of realistic models appropriate for highly structured and dynamical plasmas is often beyond the domain of simple mathematical analysis and so numerical methods are employed. This paper reviews recent numerical results for seismology of the solar corona using MHD.展开更多

The geodesic deviation vector with post-stabilization is used to compute the fast Lyapunov indicator, considered to be a very sensitive tool for discrimination between ordered or weakly chaotic motions. We make a detailed study of the dynamics in the superposed Weyl field between a black hole and shell of octopoles by using the fast Lyapunov indicator with the Poincare surface of section. In particular, we examine the effects on the dynamics around the fixed points, of varying one of the three parameters (specific energy E, specific angular momentum L and octopolar moment 0), while keeping the other two fixed, and identify the intervals of the varying parameter where the motion is regular or chaotic.展开更多

Following the boundary conditions given by Schubert & Zhang, the spherical α^2-dynamo consists of a fully convective spherical shell with inner radius ri and outer radius ro. A comparison of the critical dynamo numbers of axisymmetric and φ-dependent modes for different thicknesses of the convective shell and different α- profiles leads to the following qualitative results: (i) when the angular factor of α- profile is sin^n θ cosθ (n= 1, 2, 4) the solutions of the α^2dynamo are oscillatory and non-axisymmetric, (ii) the thinner the convective shell, the more easily is the nonaxisymmetric mode excited and the higher is the latitudinal wave number, (iii) the thickness of the outer convective shell has an effect on the symmetries of the magnetic fields.展开更多

文摘A new spectrum function is obtained by use of the Compton scattering cross section in the laboratory frame derived earlier. These two new features are absent in the Monte Carlo simulations and therefore, may have physical implications for y-ray emissions.

文摘It is widely believed that magnetic reconnection plays an important role in various eruptive phenomena of space and astrophysical plasmas. The mechanism of anomalous resistivity, however, has been an open and unsolved problem. The chaos-induced resistivity proposed by Yoshida et al.is one of possible mechanisms for anomalous resistivity.By use of the test particle simulation, the present work studies the chaos-induced resistivity for different configurations of reconnection magnetic fields and its distribution in different chaos regions of reconnection current sheets. The results show that the chaos-induced resistivity can be 6-7 orders of magnitude higher than the classical Spitzer resistivity in the X-type chaos regions and 5 orders of magnitude in the O-type chaos regions. Moreover,in the X-type chaos regions the chaosinduced resistivity of the magnetized case is higher by a factor of 2 to 3 times than that of the unmagnetized case, but in the O-type chaos regions the chaos-induced resistivity of the magnetized case is close to or lower than that of the unmagnetized case. The present work is helpful to the understanding of the dynamics of reconnection current sheets, especially of the generation mechanism of the anomalous resistivity of collisionless reconnection regions.

文摘Some experimental tests and improvements to the Very Fast Inversion of the Stokes Vector program, which is designed for the inversion calculation used by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory, are given. The resulting method costs only 1//4 of the computational time, and will be very competitive when the users are only interested in the vectorial magnetic fields and the velocities along the line of sight.

文摘A multi-model integration method is proposed to develop a multi-source and heterogeneous model for short-term solar flare prediction. Thus, integrating more diversified models, such as an expert system, a statistical model and a physical model, will greatly improve the performance of the MIM.

文摘Magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) contain a white dwarf (WD) with a magnetic field strong enough to control the accretion flow from a late type secondary. Further radio observations with high quality are needed to confirm the radio counterpart and explore the properties of this binary system.

文摘Magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) processes are important for the transfer of energy over large scales in plasmas and so are essential to understanding most forms of dynamical activity in the solar atmosphere. This paper reviews recent numerical results for seismology of the solar corona using MHD.

文摘We present details of a work aiming at the overestimation of Lyapunov exponents defined by the geodesic deviation equations in the previous work. In particular, we examine the effects on the dynamics around the fixed points, of varying one of the three parameters (specific energy E, specific angular momentum L and octopolar moment 0), while keeping the other two fixed, and identify the intervals of the varying parameter where the motion is regular or chaotic.

文摘The magnetic damping effect of the non-uniform magnetic field on the floating-zone crystal growth process in microgravity is studied by numerical simulation. The results show that the non-uni-form magnetic field with designed configuration can effectively reduce the flow near the free surface and then in the melt zone. At the same time, the designed magnetic field can improve the impurity concen-tration non-uniformity along the solidification interface. The primary principles of the magnetic field con-figuration design are also discussed.
文摘A method was developed to quantitatively describe the time-varying Lorentz force field induced in billet under harmonic magnetic field.Based on the numerical analysis of the Lorentz force, the numeral features were concluded, which comprised of the mean force, the maximum force, the long axis, short axis and rotation direction of ellipse, the phase difference index, and so on.Using this method, the Lorentz force field in φ160 billet under 3 Hz harmonic magnetic field were analyzed.

文摘Using the Chebyshev-tau method, the generation of oscillatory nonaxisymmetric stellar magnetic fields by the α^2-dynamo is studied in spherical geometry. Following the boundary conditions given by Schubert & Zhang, the spherical α^2-dynamo consists of a fully convective spherical shell with inner radius ri and outer radius ro. A comparison of the critical dynamo numbers of axisymmetric and φ-dependent modes for different thicknesses of the convective shell and different α- profiles leads to the following qualitative results: (i) when the angular factor of α- profile is sin^n θ cosθ (n= 1, 2, 4) the solutions of the α^2dynamo are oscillatory and non-axisymmetric, (ii) the thinner the convective shell, the more easily is the nonaxisymmetric mode excited and the higher is the latitudinal wave number, (iii) the thickness of the outer convective shell has an effect on the symmetries of the magnetic fields.
