This study investigates the aerodynamic performance of the NACA 633-421 airfoil and the effectiveness and feasibility of intermittent disturbance flow control methods on laminar separation bubbles(LSBs).It is found that the average velocity and influence range of the synthetic jet actuator increase with the increasing of driving frequency and driving amplitude.LSB occurs at Re=1.0×10^(5),and ruptures atα=6°.But with intermittent disturbance control,the stall angle of attack(AoA)increases while significantly reducing drag.Research shows that although certain disturbance cannot fully recover from LSB stall,decreasing driving amplitude partially restores wing aerodynamic performance,more effectively than increasing driving amplitude. 展开更多

Different from the most existing methods, intermittent control is applied to chaotic synchronization in the present paper. We formulate the intermittent control system that governs the dynamics of the projective synchronization error, then derive the sufficient conditions for the exponential stability of intermittent control system by using the Lyapunov stability theory, and finally establish the periodically intermittent controller according to the stability criterion by which the projective synchronization is expected to be achieved. AIM:To assess strabismus control and motor ocular alignment for basic exotropia surgery at 5y follow-up.METHODS:The medical records of 80 consecutive patients aged less than 17 years of age,who underwent surgery for basic exotropia by a single surgeon between years 2000 to 2009 and completed a minimum of 5y follow-up post-operatively were reviewed.Pre- and post-operative characteristics were documented at 1wk,6mo,1,3 and 5y follow-up.Subjects at 5-year follow-up were assigned to the success group if they had a postoperative angle of deviation within 10 prism diopters of exotropia or within 5 prism diopters of esotropia for distance on prism cover test,and had moderate to good strabismus control.The remaining subjects were assigned to the failure group.RESULTS:Post-operative surgical success at one week was 75%,which decreased to 41% at 5y follow-up.The success group was noted to have more patching pre-operatively(P=0.003).The duration of patching a day(P=0.020) and total duration of patching preoperatively(P=0.030) was higher in the success group.Surgical success at 1y(P=0.004) and 3y(P=0.002) were associated with higher surgical success at 5y follow-up.CONCLUSION:Post-operative motor alignment and strabismus control for basic exotropia surgery at 1y and beyond is associated with higher exotropia surgery success at 5-year follow-up.There is an association between pre-operative patching and 5-year surgical success of basic intermittent exotropia surgery. 展开更多

To guarantee bus priority with a minimum impact on car traffic at intersections, an optimal control system of the intermittent bus-only approach (IBA) was proposed. The problems of the existing system are first solved through optimization: the judgment time of the IBA system was advanced to allow a bus to jump car queues if the bus was detected to arrive at the intersection, and the instant that the IBA lane became available to cars was controlled dynamically to increase the capacity of the IBA lane. The total car delay in one cycle was then analyzed quantitatively when implementing the optimal control system. The results show that in comparison with the existing system of the IBA, the car delay is greatly reduced and the probability of a car stopping twice is low after optimizing the IBA system. 展开更多

By combining intermittency with a pinning control scheme, some effective controllers are designed. In the control scheme, only one node in each community is controlled and coupling weights of a spanning tree in each community are enhanced. Based on the Lyapunov function method and mathematical analysis technique, two results for achieving cluster synchronization are obtained. Noticeably, by introducing an adaptive strategy, some universal adaptive intermittent pinning controllers are designed for different networks. Finally, two numerical simulations are performed to verify the correctness of the derived results. 展开更多

The idea of network splitting according to time delay and weight is introduced.Based on the cyber physical systems(CPS),a class of multi-weighted complex transportation networks with multiple delays is modeled.The finite-time synchronization of the proposed complex transportation networks model is studied systematically.On the basis of the theory of stability,the technique of adaptive control,aperiodically intermittent control and finite-time control,the aperiodically intermittent adaptive finite-time synchronization controller is designed.The controller designed in this paper is beneficial for understanding the synchronization in multi-weighted complex transportation networks with multiple delays.In addition,the conditions for the existence of finite time synchronization have been discussed in detail.And the specific value of the settling finite time for synchronization is obtained.Moreover,the outer coupling configuration matrices are not required to be irreducible or symmetric.Finally,simulation results of the finite-time synchronization problem are given to illustrate the correctness of the results obtained. 展开更多

In this paper, an intermittent local electric shock scheme is proposed to suppress stable spiral waves in the Barkley model by a weak electric shock (about 0.4 to 0.7) imposed on a random selected n × n grids (n =1 - 5, compared with the original 256×256 lattice) and monitored synchronically the evolutions of the activator on the grids as the sampled signal of the activator steps out a given threshold (i.e., the electric shock works on the n ~ n grids if the activator u ≤ 0.4 or u ≥ 0.8). The numerical simulations show that a breakup of spiral is observed in the media state evolution to finally obtain homogeneous states if the electric shock with appropriate intensity is imposed. 展开更多

Furthermore, with the support of the backsteppingcontrol technique and adaptive fuzzy state observer, a fuzzy adaptive finite-time output-feedback FTC scheme isdeveloped under the intermittent actuator faults. It is testifying the scheme can ensure the controlled nonlinearUWMRs is stable and the estimation errors are convergent. Missed Opportunities for Intermittent Preventive Treatment among Pregnant Women, in a Secondary Health Facility, Cross River State, Nigeria

The study determined the magnitude and contributory factors for missed opportunities for the administration of IPTp (intermittent preventive treatment for malaria prevention), during pregnancy among pregnant women attending a secondary health facility in Calabar. This study was a descriptive survey. Exit interviews were carried out on all pregnant and post natal women who attended the antenatal clinic of a secondary health facility for two weeks in November 2008. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The mean age of respondents was 27.0 ± 5.4, mean parity was 2.4 ± 1.5, mean clinic attendance 4.9 ± 4.0 while mean gestational age at booking was 18.6± 7.7. The prevalence of missed opportunity among the pregnant women was 59.1% for IPTpl & 56.0% for IPTp2; among pregnant PLWHA (people living with HIV/AIDS), it was 100% for IPTp3, 70% for IPTp2 & 80.0% for IPTpl. Factors accountable for missed opportunity include non-availability of SP (sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine), lack of supervision, failure to prescribe medication, late booking and lack of knowledge. More women significantly received IPTp2 compared to IPTpl (P = 0.001). Discussion: The findings establish the need for making SP available in the ANC (antenatal clinic), educating health workers about current schedule and procedures for administration and early mobilization of pregnant mothers for ANC. 展开更多

This paper studies the distributed consensus control for linear multi-agent systems under discontinuous communication and control updating.A fully distributed event-triggered adaptive control protocol with strictly positive minimum interevent time(MIET)guarantees is proposed.First,an event-triggered distributed adaptive control law without using prior global information of network topologies is presented,which achieves asymptotic consensus via discrete control updating and intermittent communication.Then,a hybrid adaptive event-triggering scheme with an internal timer is designed that is activated only when the timer decreases to zero from a specified positive value.Under the proposed triggering scheme,not only Zeno behavior is excluded but also a strictly positive MIET between any two consecutive events is guaranteed,which facilitates the physical implementation.In contrast to the existing related results,the proposed fully distributed protocol only needs low-frequency communication and control updating,while ensuring the strictly positive MIET property.Finally,a simulation example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results. 展开更多

Specifically, the latter intermittent auto-pressurized spray system developed in our lab, which could spray successively via pressure from storage tubes without wetting the fermentation bed, is suitable for the promotion with the deep-litter technology in rural regions , since the power consumption is only 1 kwh per day. 展开更多

Controller area networks(CANs),as one of the widely used fieldbuses in the industry,have been extended to the automation field with strict standards for safety and reliability.In practice,factors such as fatigue and insulation wear of the cables can cause intermittent connection(IC)faults to occur frequently in the CAN,which will affect the dynamic behavior and the safety of the system.Hence,quantitatively evaluating the performance of the CAN under the influence of IC faults is crucial to real-time health monitoring of the system.In this paper,a novel methodology is proposed for real-time quantitative evaluation of CAN availability when considering IC faults,with the system availability parameter being calculated based on the network state transition model.First,the causal relationship between IC fault and network error response is constructed,based on which the IC fault arrival rate is estimated.Second,the states of the network considering IC faults are analyzed,and the deterministic and stochastic Petri net(DSPN)model is applied to describe the transition relationship of the states.Then,the parameters of the DSPN model are determined and the availability of the system is calculated based on the probability distribution and physical meaning of markings in the DSPN model.A testbed is constructed and case studies are conducted to verify the proposed methodology under various experimental setups.Experimental results show that the estimation results obtained using the proposed method agree well with the actual values. 展开更多

The rapid growth of distributed generator(DG)capacities has introduced additional controllable assets to improve the performance of distribution systems in terms of service restoration.Renewable DGs are of particular interest to utility companies,but the stochastic nature of intermittent renewable DGs could have a negative impact on the electric grid if they are not properly handled.In this study,we investigate distribution system service restoration using DGs as the primary power source,and we develop an effective approach to handle the uncertainty of renewable DGs under extreme conditions.The distribution system service restoration problem can be described as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming model by modifying the radial topology constraints and power flow equations.The uncertainty of renewable DGs will be modeled using a chance-constrained approach.Furthermore,the forecast errors and noises in real-time operation are solved using a novel model-free control algorithm that can automatically track the trajectory of real-time DG output.The proposed service restoration strategy and model-free control algorithm are validated using an IEEE 123-bus test system. 展开更多

The increasing penetration of renewable energy into power grids is reducing the regulation capacity of automatic generation control(AGC).Thus,there is an urgent demand to coordinate AGC units with active equipment such as energy storage.Current dispatch decision-making methods often ignore the intermittent effects of renewable energy.This paper proposes a two-stage robust optimization model in which energy storage is used to compensate for the intermittency of renewable energy for the dispatch of AGC units.This model exploits the rapid adjustment capability of energy storage to compensate for the slow response speed of AGC units,improve the adjustment potential,and respond to the problems of intermittent power generation from renewable energy.A column and constraint generation algorithm is used to solve the model.In an example analysis,the proposed model was more robust than a model that did not consider energy storage at eliminating the effects of intermittency while offering clear improvements in economy and efficiency. 展开更多

Treatment of Atherosclerotic Disease of the Femoral Artery: Randomized Controlled Trials and Meta-Analyses. Should You Be Sceptical?

A narrative review of the data provided by Randomised Controlled clinical trials and meta-analyses was undertaken to assess how much reliance a clinician could place on these in selecting a treatment for patients with disease of the Femoral artery. An attempt was made to detect and review every clinical trial and meta-analysis published on treatments relating to disease of the femoral artery but not relating to drug treatment. Disease of the femoral artery in >65 years age group occurs in approximately 20% of the population but symptomatology was present in 40%. In almost all trials the predominant (>90%) indication for treatment was intermittent claudication. In this setting, clinical benefit was limited and did not extend beyond 12 months. Mortality, from co-morbidities was high. The Basil Trial was the only one to examine intervention for critical limb ischemia. The results for Bypass surgery and Percutaneous transarterial balloon angioplasty (PTA) were equivalent. There is little evidence to support the use of PTA or stenting other than in the treatment of patients with critical limb ischemia. 展开更多
