The deep fissured rock mass is affected by coupled effects of initial ground stress and external dynamic disturbance. In order to study the effect of internal flaw on pre-stressed rock mechanical responses and failure behavior under impact loading, intact granite specimens and specimens with different flaw inclinations are tested by a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)and digital image correlation(DIC)method. The results show that peak strain and dynamic strength of intact specimens and specimens with different flaw angles(α)decrease with the increase of axial static pressure. The 90°flaw has weak reduction effect on peak strain, dynamic strength and combined strength, while 45°and 0°flaws have remarkable reduction effect.Specimens with 90°flaw are suffered combined shear and tensile failure under middle and low axial static pre-stresses,and suffered shear failure under high axial static pre-stresses.Specimens with 45°and 0°flaws are suffered oblique shear failure caused by pre-existing flaw under different axial static pre-stresses.Besides,based on digital image correlation method,it is found that micro-cracks before formation of macro fractures(include shear and tensile fractures)belong to tensile cracks.Tensile and shear strain localizations at pre-existing flaw tip for specimen with 45°and 0°flaws are produced much earlier than that at other positions. 展开更多

The single and coupled photonic crystal nanocavity lasers are fabricated in the InGaAsP material system and their static and dynamic features are compared. The coupled-cavity lasers show a larger lasing e^ciency and generate an output power higher than the single-cavity lasers, results that are consistent with the theoretical results obtained by rate equations. In dynamic regime, the single-cavity lasers produce pulses as short as 113 ps, while the coupled-cavity lasers show a significantly longer lasing duration. These results indicate that the photonic crystal laser is a promising candidate for the light source in high-speed photonic integrated circuit. 展开更多

To reveal the dynamic mechanical characteristics of deep rocks,a series of impact tests under triaxial static stress states corresponding to depths of 300-2400 m were conducted. The results showed that both the strain rates and the stress environments in depth significantly affect the mechanical characteristics of rocks. The sensitivity of strain rate to the dynamic strength and deformation modulus shows a negative correlation with depth, indicating that producing penetrative cracks in deep environments is more difficult when damage occurs. The dynamic strength shows a tendency to decrease and then increase slightly, but decreases sharply finally.Transmissivity demonstrates a similar trend as that of strength, whereas reflectivity indicates the opposite trend.Furthermore, two critical depths with high dynamically induced hazard possibilities based on the China Jinping Underground Laboratory(CJPL)were proposed for deep engineering. The first critical depth is 600-900 m,beyond which the sensitivity of rock dynamic characteristics to the strain rate and restraint of circumferential stress decrease, causing instability of surrounding rocks under axial stress condition. The second one lies at 1500-1800 m,where the wave impedance and dynamic strength of deep surrounding rocks drop sharply, and the dissipation energy presents a negative value. It suggests that the dynamic instability of deep surrounding rocks can be divided into dynamic load dominant and dynamic load induced types, depending on the second critical depth. 展开更多

When underground cavities are subjected to explosive stress waves,a uniquely damaged zone may appear due to the combined effect of dynamic loading and static pre-load stress. In this study,a rate-dependent two-dimensional rock dynamic constitutive model was established to investigate the dynamic fractures of rocks under different static stress conditions. The effects of the loading rate and peak amplitude of the blasting wave under different confining pressures and the vertical compressive coefficient(K_(0))were considered. The numerical simulated results reproduced the initiation and further propagation of primary radial crack fractures, which were in agreement with the experimental results. The dynamic loading rate, peak amplitude, static vertical compressive coefficient(K_(0))and confining pressure affected the evolution of fractures around the borehole. The heterogeneity parameter(m)plays an important role in the evolution of fractures around the borehole. The crack propagation path became more discontinuous and rougher in a smallerheterogeneity parameter case. 展开更多

This paper puts forward a new rock fragmentation loading method of dual-cutter head combined dynamic and static loads. By applying the numerical simulation software - RFPA2D, we have done numerical experiment about the sihstone' s crushing effect by dynamic load on single cutter head without confining pressure, dynamic load on single cut- ter head with confining pressure 10 MPa and different dual-cutter heads spacing by combined dynamic and static loads with confining pressure 10 MPa. Experimental results show that the confining pressure can obviously affect the rock frag- mentation effect. Combined dynamic and static loads can greatly improve the rock fragmentation effect. There exists an optimal spacing of dual-cutter head that can make the rock fragmentation achieve the desired effect. Through analyzing the acoustic emission accumulative energy and quantity, the authors make a conclusion that the optimum spacing is 30 mm. 展开更多

This paper studies the static deformation behavior of a piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (PMUT) actuated by a strong external electric field. The transducer membrane consists of a piezoelectric layer, a passive layer and two electrode layers. The nonlinearities of the piezoelectric layer caused by electrostriction under a strong electric field are analyzed. Because the thickness of the transducer membrane is on the microscale, the size dependence of the deformation behavior is evaluated using the couple stress theory. The results show that the optimal ratio of the top electrode diameter and the membrane diameter is around 0.674. It is also found that this optimal value does not depend on any other parameters if the thicknesses of the two electrodes are negligible compared with those of the piezo- electric and passive layers. In addition, the nonlinearities of the piezoelectric layer will become stronger along with the increase of the electric field, which means that softening of the membrane stiffness occurs when a strong external electric field is applied. Meanwhile, the optimal thickness ratio for the passive layer and the piezoelectric layer is not equal to 1.0 which is usually adopted by previous researchers. Because there exists size dependence of membrane deforma-tion, the optimal value of this thickness ratio needs to be greater than 1.0 on the microscale. 展开更多

This article lists all possible conversion equations of influence coefficients(ICs)with different formats when some of these are known to handle two-plane balancing tasks with no or less trial weight runs. There are two approaches for two-plane balancing. One can treat it as a multi-plane balance problem involving a 2×2 matrix of complex ICs where two direct ICs along with two cross-effect ICs are generated so that correction weights at one or two balance planes can be determined. One can also apply a static pare(in-phase)and/or couple pair(180 degrees out-of-phase)weights for balancing. The latter approach has been used quite often in the field, especially on steam turbine and generator rotors.Dependent on vibration mode shapes and combinations as well as balance plane accessibility, sometimes applying static or couple pair weights can be a wise choice;other times weights at one or two end planes are needed. There are totally 4 possible sets of IC data due to weights at plane 1,plane 2,static pair, and couple pair.IC data would typically be obtained by applying trial weights followed by trial weight runs.It is found, however, that all these IC data can be converted easily without trial weight runs once any two of 4 sets are known. The above findings and conversion equations have been obtained analytically and verified by experimental results.Real cases are given to demonstratetheirapplications. 展开更多

The failure characteristics under coupled static and dynamic loading were investigated by the improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) with axial pre-pressure and confining pressure. The results show that the stress—strain curve of the rock under static-dynamic coupled loading is a typical class I curve when the dynamic load is comparatively high; With the decrease of the dynamic load, the stress—strain curve transforms to a typical class II curve. The dynamic failure process was recorded by high-speed photography. Analyses of fracture surface morphology show that the failure modes of specimens are tensile failure or combined shear failure when the impact load energy is low, but the failure modes of specimens become tensile failure when the impact load energy is high. The results of fractal dimension show that the elastic potential energy release leads to increase in the degree of crushing of samples when the energy of impact load is low under coupled static and dynamic loads with high stress. 展开更多

It is not uncommon that backfill material used in underground mining being exposed to repetitive dynamic stresses induced by blasting operations or rockburst events. Understanding the strength and fracture evolution of backfilled stopes is critical to maintain the long-term stope stability and ensure safe mining activities. This paper aims to study the damage evolution of the backfill material and its host rock behaviour under three-dimensional(3D) dynamic loading. Using a true-triaxial testing machine, multiple samples of backfill material enclosed by country rock were fabricated and tested under various dynamic loadings with different true-triaxial confining stress conditions. In addition, the nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) measurement was conducted on the samples before and after exerting static and dynamic loading to obtain their porosity distribution changes. The experiment results suggested that with the increase of the dynamic loading, the porosity of the backfill sample goes through a two-stage process, which shows a slightly linear decrease and then followed by an exponential increase. The research findings can help understand the damage mechanism and fracture development of backfilled stopes and its host rock in deep underground mines, which are constantly subject to the combination of 3D static confining stress and dynamic loading. 展开更多

Typical rotors such as those on steam turbine or generator are often supported by two bearings with two balance planes at both ends.Vibrations are monitored by a pair of proximity probes at each bearing. There are two approaches to reduce 1X vibration due to unbalance at both ends via balancing with influence coefficient method. The first approach is to treat it as a multiple-plane balancing problem involving 2x2 matrix of complex influence coefficients. The second approach is to treat it as two single-plane balance problems using static(in-phase)and couple(180 degree out-of-phase)components,respectively.Conversion equations of influence coefficients between these two approaches have been found previously by the author. The corresponding spreadsheets that convert influence coefficients between these two formats are presented in the current paper. The paper shows effectiveness of these conversion equations in dealing with real balancing problems in the field.A detailed balance case is presented to demonstrate how the conversion equations are used to reduce vibration effectively. 展开更多

Fo... The centrifugal force and overturning moment generated by satellite-borne rotating payload have a significant impact on the stability of on-orbit satellite attitude, which must be controlled to the qualified range. For the satellite-borne rotors' low working revs and large centroidal deviation and height, and that the horizontal vibration produced by centrifugal force is not of the same magnitude as the torsional vibration by overturning moment, the balancing machine's measurement accuracy is low. Analysis shows that the mixture of horizontal vibration and torsional vibration of the vibrational mechanism contribute mainly to the machine's performance, as well as the instability of vibration center position. A vibrational mechanism was put forward, in which the horizontal and torsional vibration get separated effectively by way of fixing the vibration center. From experimental results, the separation between the weak centrifugal force signal and the strong moment signal was realized, errors caused by unstable vibration center are avoided, and the balancing machine based on this vibration structure is able to meet the requirements of dynamic balancing for the satellite's rotating payloads in terms of accuracy and stability. 展开更多
