Heavy components of low-alloy high-strength(LAHS) steels are generally formed by multi-pass forging. It is necessary to explore the flow characteristics and hot workability of LAHS steels during the multi-pass forging process, which is beneficial to the formulation of actual processing parameters. In the study, the multi-pass hot compression experiments of a typical LAHS steel are carried out at a wide range of deformation temperatures and strain rates. It is found that the work hardening rate of the experimental material depends on deformation parameters and deformation passes, which is ascribed to the impacts of static and dynamic softening behaviors. A new model is established to describe the flow characteristics at various deformation passes. Compared to the classical Arrhenius model and modified Zerilli and Armstrong model, the newly proposed model shows higher prediction accuracy with a confidence level of 0.98565. Furthermore, the connection between power dissipation efficiency(PDE) and deformation parameters is revealed by analyzing the microstructures. The PDE cannot be utilized to reflect the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution during the entire deformation process, but only to assess the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution in a specific deformation parameter state. As a result, an integrated processing map is proposed to better study the hot workability of the LAHS steel, which considers the effects of instability factor(IF), PDE, and distribution and size of grains. The optimized processing parameters for the multi-pass deformation process are the deformation parameters of 1223–1318 K and 0.01–0.08 s^(-1). Complete dynamic recrystallization occurs within the optimized processing parameters with an average grain size of 18.36–42.3 μm. This study will guide the optimization of the forging process of heavy components. 展开更多

High-strength steels are mainly composed of medium-or low-temperature microstructures, such as bainite or martensite, with coherent transformation characteristics. This type of microstructure has a high density of dislocations and fine crystallographic structural units, which ease the coordinated matching of high strength, toughness, and plasticity.Meanwhile, given its excellent welding perform-ance,high-strength steel has been widely used in major engineering constructions, such as pipelines, ships, and bridges.However,visual-ization and digitization of the effective units of these coherent transformation structures using traditional methods(optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy)is difficult due to their complex morphology. Moreover, the establishment of quantitative relationships with macroscopic mechanical properties and key process parameters presents additional difficulty. This article reviews the latest progress in microstructural visualization and digitization of high-strength steel, with a focus on the application of crystallographic methods in the development of high-strength steel plates and welding. We obtained the crystallographic data(Euler angle)of the transformed microstruc-tures through electron back-scattering diffraction and combined them with the calculation of inverse transformation from bainite or martensite to austenite to determine the reconstruction of high-temperature parent austenite and orientation relationship(OR)during con-tinuous cooling transformation.Furthermore, visualization of crystallographic packets, blocks, and variants based on actual OR and digit-ization of various grain boundaries can be effectively completed to establish quantitative relationships with alloy composition and key process parameters, thereby providing reverse design guidance for the development of high-strength steel. 展开更多

Industrial wastes such as steel slag and coal gangue etc.were chosen as raw materials for preparing ceramic via the conventional solid-state reaction method. With steel slag and coal gangue mixed in various mass ratios, from 100%steel slag to 100%coal gangue at 10%intervals,microstructure and possible phase evolution of the coal gangue-steel slag ceramics were investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry and Archimedes boiling method. The experimental results suggest that the phase compositions of the as-prepared ceramics could be altered with the increased amount of coal gangue in the ceramics. The anorthite-diopside eutectic can be formed in the ceramics with the mass ratios of steel slag to coal gangue arranged from 8:2 to 2:8,which was responsible for the melting of the steel slag-coal gangue ceramics at relatively high temperature.Further investigations on the microstructure suggested that the addition of the proper amount of steel slag in ceramic compositions was conducive to the pore formation and further contributed to an increment in porosity. 展开更多

H-steel all-bolted connection steel frame structures with heat preservation and decoration composite wall boards were investigated and the seismic performances of three scaled specimens were studied. The failure modes, hysteresis curves, bearing capacity, ductility, energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation and strain distribution were discussed. The calculation method of structural theoretical internal force was presented. The results showed that the overall structural seismic performance was better, and the structural ductility met the demands of elastic-plastic inter-story drift angle for seismic design. The H-steel weak-axis connection structure obtained better energy dissipation capacity, and its bearing capacity and stiffness were slightly different from the strong-axis connection. The heat preservation and decoration performance of composite wallboard and the all-bolted connection of the steel frame realized prefabrication during the whole construction period. The plastic hinge of the steel beam can be moved outwards because of the L-angles,which effectively avoids stress concentration in joint areas and expands the plastic hinge range. The errors between the theoretical structural capacity calculated by the plastic analysis method and the test results were within 2.44%.In addition, structural failure mechanisms and bearing capacities were verified by the finite element(FE)analysis, and the effects of the main parameters on the structures were investigated. The FE verification results were the same as in the test. The research results provide theoretical support and technical guidance for the application of thermal insulation and decorative composite wall panels in H-shaped steel all-bolted steel frames. 展开更多

The DP1500 steel series successfully produced by Baosteel is a marked improvement over the cold-rolled hot-dip galvanized dual-phase steel series.Sufficient parameter data related to forming characteristics are needed for the successful application of dual-phase steel series in engineering structures. Therefore, differences in the mech-anical properties, forming limit, hole expansion ratio, and stretch bend limit of the 1.5 GPa ultrahigh-strength steel, including DP1500,QP1500,and MS1500,have been systematically studied. Results show that the DP1500 exhibits good plastic deformation performance and approximately 5% uniform elongation, and its true major strain minimum on the forming limit curve(FLC_(0)) value is approximately 0.083,which is higher and lower than the FLC_(0) values of MS1500 and QP1500 of the same strength grade,respectively.DP1500 also exhibits good flanging and pore expansion capabilities and superior performance to QP1500 and MS1500.The minimum radius-to-thickness(R/T) ratio(1.4) of DP1500 in the 90° bend tests transverse to the rolling direction is between the R/T ratios of MS1500 and the QP1500.Overall,the formability performance of DP1500 is between that of MS1500 and QP1500.Its excellent crash energy absorption and formability performance render it a suitable structural component, and it has been successfully tested and verified on a typical complex ultrahigh-strength steel skeleton structure. 展开更多

The mechanisms of oxide metallurgy include inducing the formation of intragranular acicular ferrite(IAF)using micron-sized inclusions and restricting the growth of prior austenite grains(PAGs)by nanosized particles during welding. The chaotically oriented IAF and refined PAGs inhibit crack initiation and propagation in the steel, resulting in high impact toughness. This work summarizes the com-bined effect of deoxidizers and alloying elements, with the aim to provide a new perspective for the research and practice related to im-proving the impact toughness of the heat affected zone(HAZ)during the high heat input welding.Ti complex deoxidation with other strong deoxidants, such as Mg,Ca,Zr,and rare earth metals(REMs),can improve the toughness of the heat-affected zone(HAZ)by re-fining PAGs or increasing IAF contents. However,it is difficult to identify the specific phase responsible for IAF nucleation because ef-fective inclusions formed by complex deoxidation are usually multiphase.Increasing alloying elements, such as C,Si,Al,Nb,or Cr,con-tents can impair HAZ toughness.A high C content typically increases the number of coarse carbides and decreases the potency of IAF formation.Si,Cr,or Al addition leads to the formation of undesirable microstructures.Nb reduces the high-temperature stability of the precipitates.Mo,V,and B can enhance HAZ toughness.Mo-containing precipitates present good thermal stability.VN or V(C,N)is ef-fective in promoting IAF nucleation due to its good coherent crystallographic relationship with ferrite. The formation of the B-depleted zone around the inclusion promotes IAF formation. The interactions between alloying elements are complex, and the effect of adding dif-ferent alloying elements remains to be evaluated. In the future, the interactions between various alloying elements and their effects on ox-ide metallurgy,as well as the calculation of the nucleation effects of effective inclusions using first principles calculations will become the focus of oxide metallurgy. 展开更多

The reliable welding of T91 heat-resistant steel to 316L stainless steel is a considerable issue for ensuring the safety in service of ultrasupercritical power generation unit and nuclear fusion reactor, but the high-quality dissimilar joint of these two steels was difficult to be obtained by traditional fusion welding methods. Here we improved the structure-property synergy in a dissimilar joint of T91 steel to 316L steel via friction stir welding.A defect-free joint with a large bonding interface was produced using a small-sized tool under a relatively high welding speed. The bonding interface was involved in a mixing zone with both mechanical mixing and metallurgical bonding. No obvious material softening was detected in the joint except a negligible hardness decline of only HV~10 in the heat-affected zone of the T91 steel side due to the formation of ferrite phase. The welded joint exhibited an excellent ultimate tensile strength as high as that of the 316L parent metal and a greatly enhanced yield strength on account of the dependable bonding and material renovation in the weld zone. This work recommends a promising technique for producing high-strength weldments of dissimilar nuclear steels. 展开更多

The dendrite growth behavior of high-strength steel during slab continuous casting with a traveling-wave magnetic field was studied in this paper. The morphology of the solidification structure and composition distribution were analyzed. Results showed that the columnar crystals could deflect and break when the traveling-wave magnetic field had low current intensity. With the increase in current intensity, the secondary dendrite arm spacing and solute permeability decreased, and the columnar crystal transformed into an equiaxed crystal. The electromagnetic force caused by the traveling-wave magnetic field changed the temperature gradient and velocity magnitude and promoted the breaking and fusing of dendrites. Dendrite compactness and composition uniformity were arranged in descending order as follows:columnar-toequiaxed transition (high current intensity), columnar crystal zone (low current intensity), columnar-to-equiaxed transition (low current intensity), and equiaxed crystal zone (high current intensity). Verified numerical simulation results combined with the boundary layer theory of solidification front and dendrite breaking–fusing model revealed the dendrite deflection mechanism and growth process. When thermal stress is not considered, and no narrow segment can be found in the dendrite, the velocity magnitude on the solidification front of liquid steel can reach up to 0.041 m/s before the dendrites break. 展开更多

In the long traditional process of steelmaking, excess oxygen is blown into the converter, and alloying elements are used for deoxidation. This inevitably results in excessive deoxidation of products remaining within the steel liquid, affecting the cleanliness of the steel. With the increasing requirements for steel performance, reducing the oxygen content in the steel liquid and ensuring its high cleanliness is necessary. After more than a hundred years of development, the total oxygen content in steel has been reduced from approximately 100×10^(-6)to approximately 10×10^(-6),and it can be controlled below 5×10^(-6)in some steel grades.A relatively stable and mature deoxidation technology has been formed, but further reducing the oxygen content in steel is no longer significant for improving steel quality. Our research team developed a deoxidation technology for bearing steel by optimizing the entire conventional process. The technology combines silicon–manganese predeoxidation, ladle furnace diffusion deoxidation, and vacuum final deoxidation. We successfully conducted industrial experiments and produced interstitial-free steel with natural decarbonization predeoxidation.Non-aluminum deoxidation was found to control the oxygen content in bearing steel to between 4×10^(-6) and 8×10^(-6),altering the type of inclusions, eliminating large particle Ds-type inclusions, improving the flowability of the steel liquid, and deriving a higher fatigue life. The natural decarbonization predeoxidation of interstitial-free steel reduced aluminum consumption and production costs and significantly improved the quality of cast billets. 展开更多

Nowadays, the development of novel metallic materials for rock support have attracted research interests since they can significantly improve the deformation and energy absorption capacities of rock bolts.Although previous studies proved the importance and mechanical advantages of utilizing high-strength and high-toughness(HSHT)steels in rock support, there is no systematic analysis to reveal the essential energy absorption parameter and the guidelines for further development of metallic rock support materials. This paper analyzes the energy absorption characteristics of novel HSHT steels(negative Poisson’s ratio(NPR)and twinning-induced plasticity(TWIP)steels)in comparison with conventional rock support materials.A physically based crystal plasticity(CP)model was set up and calibrated to study the effect of strain hardening rate(SHR).Meanwhile, the roles of underlying physical mechanisms,i.e.the dislocation density and twin volume fraction, were studied. The results show that the improvement of energy absorption density(EAD)is essential for further development of rock support materials, besides the increase of energy absorption rate(EAR)for previous development of conventional rock support materials. The increase of EAD requires increases of both strength and deformation capacity of materials. For HSHT steels, the decrease of SHR has a positive effect on the improvement of EAD.In addition, the increase of EAD is followed by the increase of twin volume fraction and the decrease of plastic Poisson’s ratio which can promote deformation plasticity of materials.Meanwhile, the increase of EAR is correlated with the accumulation of dislocation density, which can increase the strength of materials. This paper provides the theoretical basis and guidelines for developing rock support materials in deep underground engineering and other related fields. 展开更多

This work constructed a machine learning(ML)model to predict the atmospheric corrosion rate of low-alloy steels(LAS).The material properties of LAS,environmental factors, and exposure time were used as the input, while the corrosion rate as the output.6 dif-ferent ML algorithms were used to construct the proposed model.Through optimization and filtering, the eXtreme gradient boosting(XG-Boost)model exhibited good corrosion rate prediction accuracy. The features of material properties were then transformed into atomic and physical features using the proposed property transformation approach, and the dominant descriptors that affected the corrosion rate were filtered using the recursive feature elimination(RFE)as well as XGBoost methods. The established ML models exhibited better predic-tion performance and generalization ability via property transformation descriptors. In addition, the SHapley additive exPlanations(SHAP)method was applied to analyze the relationship between the descriptors and corrosion rate. The results showed that the property transformation model could effectively help with analyzing the corrosion behavior, thereby significantly improving the generalization ability of corrosion rate prediction models. 展开更多

The metallurgical quality control of magnesium(Mg)and Mg alloys in melting process is required to ensure a satisfied mechanical and corrosion performance, while the typical used steel crucible introduces impurities and interfacial interaction during melting process. Therefore,a systematic study about impurities diffusion and interfacial interaction between molten Mg and steel is necessary. In the present study, the interfacial reaction between molten AZ91D Mg alloy and mild steel during melting process was investigated with the melting temperatures of 700℃,750℃ and 800℃.The results show that Al(Fe,Mn)intermetallic layer is the intermetallic primarily formed at the interfaces of AZ91D melt and mild steel.Meanwhile,Al_(8)(Mn,Fe)5is indexed between Al(Fe,Mn)and AZ91D.AlFe_(3)C appears between the mild steel and Al(Fe,Mn)at 700℃ and 750℃,but absent at 800℃ due to the increased solubility of carbon in Mg matrix. It is found that the growth of the intermetallic layer is controlled by diffusion mechanism, and Al and Mn are the dominant diffusing species in the whole interfacial reaction process.By measuring the thickness of different layers, the growth constant was calculated. It increases from 1.89(±0.03)×10^(-12)m^(2)·s^(-1)at 700℃ to 3.05(±0.05)×10^(-12)m^(2)·s^(-1)at 750℃,and 5.18(±0.05)×10^(-12)m^(2)·s^(-1)at 800℃.Meanwhile,the content of Fe is linearly increased in AZ91D with the increase of holding time at 700℃ and 750℃,while it shows a significantly increment after holding for 8 h at 800℃,indicating holding temperature is more crucial to determine the Fe content of AZ91D than holding time. 展开更多

Traditional 3Ni weathering steel cannot completely meet the requirements for offshore engineering development, resulting in the design of novel 3Ni steel with the addition of microalloy elements such as Mn or Nb for strength enhancement becoming a trend. The stress-assisted corrosion behavior of a novel designed high-strength 3Ni steel was investigated in the current study using the corrosion big data method. The information on the corrosion process was recorded using the galvanic corrosion current monitoring method. The gradi-ent boosting decision tree(GBDT)machine learning method was used to mine the corrosion mechanism, and the importance of the struc-ture factor was investigated.Field exposure tests were conducted to verify the calculated results using the GBDT method. Results indic-ated that the GBDT method can be effectively used to study the influence of structural factors on the corrosion process of 3Ni steel.Dif-ferent mechanisms for the addition of Mn and Cu to the stress-assisted corrosion of 3Ni steel suggested that Mn and Cu have no obvious effect on the corrosion rate of non-stressed 3Ni steel during the early stage of corrosion. When the corrosion reached a stable state, the in-crease in Mn element content increased the corrosion rate of 3Ni steel, while Cu reduced this rate.In the presence of stress, the increase in Mn element content and Cu addition can inhibit the corrosion process. The corrosion law of outdoor-exposed 3Ni steel is consistent with the law based on corrosion big data technology, verifying the reliability of the big data evaluation method and data prediction model selection. 展开更多

The infamous type Ⅳ failure within the fine-grained heat-affected zone (FGHAZ) in G115 steel weldments seriously threatens the safe operation of ultra-supercritical (USC) power plants. In this work, the traditional thermo-mechanical treatment was modified via the replacement of hot-rolling with cold rolling,i.e.,normalizing,cold rolling, and tempering (NCT),which was developed to improve the creep strength of the FGHAZ in G115 steel weldments. The NCT treatment effectively promoted the dissolution of preformed M_(23)C_(6)particles and relieved the boundary segregation of C and Cr during welding thermal cycling, which accelerated the dispersed reprecipitation of M_(23)C_(6) particles within the fresh reaustenitized grains during post-weld heat treatment. In addition, the precipitation of Cu-rich phases and MX particles was promoted evidently due to the deformation-induced dislocations. As a result, the interacting actions between precipitates, dislocations, and boundaries during creep were reinforced considerably.Following this strategy, the creep rupture life of the FGHAZ in G115 steel weldments can be prolonged by 18.6%,which can further push the application of G115 steel in USC power plants. 展开更多

Three kinds of ultra-high-strength steels are subjected to uniaxial tensile, forming limit, and hole expansion tests to characterize their material forming properties. Results show that the elongation of S1500 reaches 12.9%and is higher than that of MS1500 with the same strength grade but is lower than that of QP980.The forming limit of S1500 steel is higher than that of MS1500 but lower than that of QP980.The instantaneous n-value of the material changes with the volume fraction of retained austenite. The hole expansion ratios of S1500,MS1500,and QP980 steels are 31.3%,32.2%,and 28.3%,respectively.The hole expansion ratio of QP steel increases slightly with the increase in strength grade. This behavior is contrary to the change trend of elongation and forming limit.Among the three kinds of materials,QP980 steel has the best global formability, and S1500 steel has better global formability than martensitic steel with a similar strength grade. The local formability of the materials improves slightly with the decrease in the amount of retained austenite.MS1500 may have the best local formability in accordance with engineering practice. 展开更多

Steel slag is characterized by high strength, good wear resistance and micro-expansion.This study aims at exploring the potential of steel slag in cement stabilized aggregates, mainly including mechanical properties, shrinkage and compensation mechanisms. For this purpose, the compressive strength and compressive resilient modulus of cement stabilized aggregates with different steel slag contents(CSMS)were initially investigated.Subsequently, the effects of steel slag and cement on dry shrinkage, temperature shrinkage, and total shrinkage were analyzed through a series of shrinkage test designs.Additionally,in combination with X-ray diffraction(XRD)and Scanning electron microscope(SEM),the characteristic peaks and microscopic images of cement, steel slag and cement-steel slag at different hydration ages were analyzed to identify the chemical substances causing the expansion volume of steel slag and reveal the compensation mechanism of CSMS.The results show that the introduction of 20%steel slag improved the mechanical properties of CSMS by 16.7%,reduced dry shrinkage by 21%,increased temperature shrinkage by 5.8%and reduced its total shrinkage by 19.2%.Compared with the hydration reaction of cement alone, the composite hydration reaction of steel slag with cement does not produce new hydrates.Furthermore,it is noteworthy that the volume expansion of the f-CaO hydration reaction in steel slag can compensate for the volume shrinkage of cement-stabilized macadam. This research can provide a solid theoretical basis for the application and promotion of steel slag in cement-stabilized macadam and reduce the possibility of shrinkage cracking. 展开更多

In this paper, the construction process of a cable-stayed bridge with corrugated steel webs was monitored. Moreover, the end performance of the bridge was verified by load test.Owing to the consideration of the bridge structure safety,it is necessary to monitor the main girder deflection, stress, construction error and safety state during construction.Furthermore,to verify whether the bridge can meet the design requirements, the static and dynamic load tests are carried out after the completion of the bridge. The results of construction monitoring show that the stress state of the structure during construction is basically consistent with the theoretical calculation and design requirements, and both meet the design and specification requirements. The final measured stress state of the structure is within the allowable range of the cable-stayed bridge, and the stress state of the structure is normal and meets the specification requirements. The results of load tests show that the measured deflection values of the mid-span section of the main girder are less than the theoretical calculation values. The maximum deflection of the girder is−20.90 mm,which is less than−22.00 mm of the theoretical value, indicating that the girder has sufficient structural stiffness. The maximum impact coefficient under dynamic load test is 1.08,which is greater than 1.05 of theoretical value, indicating that the impact effect of heavy-duty truck on this type of bridge is larger. This study can provide important reference value for construction and maintenance of similar corrugated steel web cable-stayed bridges. 展开更多

For the maintenance of steel bridges, the mechanical properties of steel used in the bridges must be elucidated. When enough dimensions of specimens cannot be extracted from the actual members, miniaturized specimens are used for evaluation. In the case of the Charpy impact test,sub-and half-size specimens are specified instead of full-size specimens of which the thickness is 10 mm.The value of absorbed energy and energy transient temperature obtained by Charpy impact tests with sub-size and half-size specimens were investigated from the viewpoint of maintenance of bridges in this study. The absorbed energy was not in proportion to the thickness of specimens of steel used in the actual overage bridges. The tendency of energy transient temperature obtained by thin specimens of the overage steel differed from that of the present steel.A method for evaluating the performance against brittle fracture occurrence based on the WES3003 criterion was examined. The results show the significance of evaluation based on the energy transient temperature for reasonable maintenance of bridges. 展开更多

The mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of an Fe-30Mn-3Al-3Si twinninginduced plasticity(TWIP)steel processed using warm forging was investigated. It is found that steel processed via warm forging improves comprehensive mechanical properties compared to the TWIP steel processed via cold rolling, with a high tensile strength(R_(m))of 793 MPa,a yield strength(R_(P))of 682 MPa,an extremely large R_(P)/R_(m)ratio as high as 0.86 as well as an excellent elongation rate of 46.8%.The microstructure observation demonstrates that steel processed by warm forging consists of large and elongated grains together with fine, equiaxed grains.Complicated micro-defect configurations were also observed within the steel, including dense dislocation networks and a few coarse deformation twins. As the plastic deformation proceeds, the densities of dislocations and deformation twins significantly increase. Moreover,a great number of slip lines could be observed in the elongated grains. These findings reveal that a much more dramatic interaction between microstructural defect and dislocations glide takes place in the forging sample, wherein the fine and equiaxed grains propagated dislocations more rapidly, together with initial defect configurations, are responsible for enhanced strength properties.Meanwhile, larger, elongated grains with more prevalently activated deformation twins result in high plasticity. 展开更多
