Pack Aluminide Coatings Formed at 650℃ for Enhancing Oxidation Resistance of Low Alloy Steels

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of forming iron aluminide coatings on a commercial 9Cr-lMo (wt.%) alloy steel by pack cementation at 650 °C in an attempt to improve its high temperature oxidation resistance. Pack powders containing Al, A12O3 and a series of halide salts were used to carry out the coating deposition experiments, which enabled identification of the most suitable activator for the pack aluminising process at the intended temperature. The effect of pack aluminium content on the growth kinetics and microstructure of the coatings was then studied by keeping deposition conditions and pack activator content constant while increasing the pack aluminium content from 1.4 wt.% to 6 wt.%. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques were used to analyse the phases and microstructures of the coatings formed and to determine depth profiles of coating elements in the coating layer. Oxidation resistance of the coating was studied at 650 °C in air by intermittent weight measurement at room temperature. It was observed that the coating could substantially enhance the oxidation resistance of the steel under these testing conditions, which was attributed to the capability of the iron aluminide phases to form alumina scale on the coating surface through preferential Al oxidation. 展开更多

The effect of mixture composition, aluminizing temperatureand time and C content of the steel substrate on the structure and thickness of the aluminidelayer, and on the oxidation resistance was investigated. The optimum oxidation resistance canbe achieved with a low carbon steel substrate when the intermetallic phases Fe3Al and FeAlform the surface of the aluminide layer. In this case, the Al concentration at the surface of thealuminide coating is at least ≥15 wt pct. Formation of high Al concentration phases (FeAl3 andFe2Al5) during aluminizing should be avoided as they tend to embrittle the aluminide layer andreduce its oxidation resistance. 展开更多

Nanocrystal ODS (oxide dispersion strengthening) aluminide coatings were produced on a stainless steel and nickel-based superalloy by the pock aluminizing process assisted by ball peening, Pure Al powders and 1% of ultra-fine Y2O3 powders were mixed by ball milling. The ultra-fine Y2O3 powders were dispersed in Al particles. Ball peening welded the Al particles onto the substrate and accelerated the formation of aluminide coating. Nanocrystal ODS aluminide coatings were produced by the outward growth at a much low temperature (below 600℃) in a short treatment time. The effects of the operation temperature and treatment time on the formation of the coatings were analyzed. SEM (scanning electron microscope), AFM (atomic force microscope), EDS (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometer) and XRD (X-ray diffraction) methods were applied to investigate the microstructure of the coatings. The aluminide coating process of Ti-6Al-4V alloys with different fillers(100wt.% Al_2O_3,50wt% Y_2O_3+50wt.% Al_2O_3 and 100wt.% Y_2O_3) for improvement of the oxidation resistance were investigated.The results show that the filler does not only participate in the aluminizing process,but also has much effect on the coating composition.The XRD analysis reveals that the aluminide coating with filler Al_2O_3 is predominant with TiAl_3 and TiAl phases;while the aluminide coatings with filler Y_2O_3+Al_2O_3 are predominant with Ti_3Al phase.The oxidation kinetics shows that different fillers affect greatly the oxidation resistance of aluminide coating,and the oxidation resistance of aluminized specimens with pack aluminizing filler Al_2O_3 are about 5-8 times than that of the aluminized specimens with other pack aluminizing fillers. 展开更多

The microhardness and oxidation resistance at 900℃ of the aluminide coatings were studied. It was found that pack-aluminizing improves the microhardness of the 0.5Cro.5Mo-0.25V steel while it reduces the microhardness of the H85 steel. Pack aluminizing highly improves the oxidation resistance after 20h exposure at 900℃ in air for the investigated steels. 展开更多

A method was presented to prepare aluminide coatings on metals by combining the pack aluminizing with the ball impact process. This technique applied mechanical vibration to a retort, which was loaded with pack-aluminizing powder, specimens and alloy balls. Pack aluminizing was carried out with repeated ball impact, which accelerated chemical reactions and atomic diffusion. Aluminide coatings were formed at a relatively lower temperature (below 600 ℃) and in a shorter treatment time, compared with the conventional pack aluminizing. The effects of the operation temperature and the treatment time on the formation of the coatings were analysed. The SEM, EDS and XRD analysis results show that the aluminide coatings appear to be homogeneous, with a high density and free of porosity, and have excellent adherence to the substrate. The coatings mainly consist of Al-rich phases such as η-Fe2Al5, θ-FeAl3 and ?CrAl5. Oxidation resistance was studied by high-temperature tests. The formation mechanism of the Al-coatings was also investigated. This technique provides a new approach for industrial diffusion coatings with great energy and time savings. 展开更多

The steels with chromium contents between 9%and 12%wt are used for power plants with advanced steam oxidation conditions.They present good creep properties as 9%Cr steels and good oxidation resistance,at the temperatures range between 500℃~600℃.In the last years numerous investigation in development of coatings has been realized with the aim the protected them against the oxidation in order to allow operation of steam turbines at 650℃.In this study,Al-Hf protective coatings were deposited by CVD-FBR on ferritic steel HCM-12A followed by a diffusion heat treatment,have shown to be protective at 650℃under steam for at least 3000 hours of laboratory steam exposure under atmospheric pressure.Morphology and composition of coatings were characterized by different techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy(SEM),electron probe microanalysis,and X-ray diffraction(XRD). On the other hand,volatile species by mass spectrometry(MS) and thermogravimetric measurements (TG) during the initial stages oxidation of the P92 ferritic steel without and of Al and Al/Si coating by chemical vapour deposition in fluidized bed reactors(CVD-FBR) at 650℃in Ar+20%H_2O for 150 h were studied.In order to go forward to coatings design the Thermocalc code is used as base for the MSdata. TG-MS experiments were conducted in a closed steam loop in order to obtain information about the oxyhydroxides formation as reaction between coatings and steam.From those results the role of the different coating element could be established and optimized for the coating durability.An oxidation mechanism based on the TG-MS results is given.The morphology/composition and structure of the oxidized samples were also studied using SEM/EDS and XRD techniques. 展开更多

This paper reports the oxidation behavior of stainless steel type 403 as a substrate material with and without NiAl coating. Evaluation of oxidation resistance was performed on uncoated and coated specimens at 850 and 1050°C. A commercial diffusion process was used for the formation of NiAl intermetallic coatings on the specimens. Before aluminizing, a layer of nickel, about 40 um, was deposited on specimens by electroplating. Various techniques including SEM, EDAX, optical microscopy and micro-hardness testing were employed to investigate the coatings before and after oxidation tests. Nickel-aluminides produced by two stage; plating-aluminizing, treatment with NiAl on the surface increased the performance of stainless steel samples significantly. 展开更多

Micro-laminated ZrO2-Al2O3 coatings were prepared by electrochemical depositing ZrO2 film and Al2O3 film alternatively in ethanol solutions containing aluminum nitrate and zirconium nitrate, with small amounts of (yttrium) nitrate added respectively into both solutions. The micro-laminated ZrO2-Al2O3 coating is of nanostructure. FE-SEM analyses show that the cross section of the micro-laminated coatings has alternate six-layer films of ZrO2 and Al2O3, with the thickness of each layer in the range of nanometer or submicron. The surface of the (micro-)(laminated) coatings is composed of nano-particles. SEM, XRD and mass gain measurement were adopted to study the oxidation resistance of coatings on stainless steel. It has been found that all the coatings are effective in protecting the substrate from oxidation, and micro-laminated coatings exhibit more excellent protectiveness performance. The nano-coating could... A new kind of anti-oxidation inorganic nano-coating for the common low carbon steel was prepared. It included magnesite mineral, metallurgic dust and silicate adhesive as the main raw materials. The nano-coating could be sprayed directly onto the low carbon steel slab even though with hot surface as far as under 1000 ℃ . And at the same time, a compact thin nano-film was formed, and the film would inhibit the oxygen into the interface of the steel body and decrease the loss of weight because of oxidation. The loss was decreased by about 60% or more. The properties and mechanism of oxidation resistance of the coating were discussed through XRD, TG-DTA and SEM. The experimental results show that many reactions would happen among the companents of the coating and then many microspheres with the size of 80- 100nm generated in the system. By using the heat of the steel body, the silicate adhesive would interact with the microspheres, and the other components of the coating would be soft and sintered so that when the coating was sprayed onto the suface of the steel slab , the intact and compact film could be formed and adhesive with the steel body. Besides the special properties of anti- oxidation, the coating could prevent the volatilization of microelement in the steel such as silicate and carbon at a high temperature. So it can improve the quality and output of steel with this new kind of nano-coating. 展开更多

A new-type of β-NiAl coating containing Y_2O_3 particles was obtained by electrolytic co-deposition and pack aluminizing techniques,and the influences of the nature of Y_2O_3 and its content on the oxidation behaviour of the coating at 1100℃ were studied.The test results indicate that the oxidation rates of the composite coatings are reduced and the scale adhesion is also improved remarkably.The content of Y_2O_3 has little influence on the oxidation rates of the composite coatings,but does obviously on the scale adhesion by modifying the configura- tion of the oxides at the scale-coating interface.The needle-like oxides penetrating into the coating show an obvious keying effect.A part of the dispersed Y_2O_3 in the as-deposited coating accumulates and forms a Y_2O_3-rich layer at the coating-substrate interface immediately after aluminizing.The layer is beneficial to reduce the degradation of the composite coating. 展开更多

A kind of ceramic slurry was prepared and sprayed onto the surface of 9Ni steel at room temperature. The coating layer will not only reduce the depth of the formed Ni-enriched entanglement at high temperature but also have an excellent ability to resist oxidation of the 9Ni steel. Compared to bare specimen, the depths of the entanglement of the coated 9Ni specimen could be successfully reduced by 74.1% and the oxidation loss be decreased by 62.3% by heating at 1 250 ℃ for 60 min. In addition, the coated specimen indicates no trace of oxide pegs. It proves that the coating has outstanding improvement to internal oxidation resistance. Some characterization methods such as metalloscopy, XRD, XPS, SEM and EDX have been used to reveal a possible protective mechanism. The result shows that the coating layer reacts with the iron oxide to form Mg Fe2O4 on the surface of the coated specimen, which could provide a smaller diffusion coefficient rate of Fe ion. The coating with a low cost and easy implementation is promisingly applicable in the slab-reheating process of the 9Ni steel. 展开更多

The results showed that CeO2 coating reduced effectively the oxidation rate of TP304H. Analysis with SEM and EDS showed the structure of oxide scale turned from multi-layer to mono-layer and oxide scale with high Cr content formed on the surface of CeO2 coating while inner oxidation disappeared. Based on test results and CeO2characters that Ce ion can vary between Ce4+ and Ce3+ under oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor environment, it is concluded that CeO2 coating acts as a barrier to prevent oxygen inner diffusion and the partial oxygen pressure of CeO2 coating-substrate interface is limited. Cr first diffuses outward across CeO2 coating and forms oxide scale on the surface, which delays formation of Fe oxide. 展开更多

The plasma sprayed gradated coating with the bottom layer of NiCrAl and the top layer of(ZrO2+Y2O3) was prepared by the plasma spraying technique. The phase structure and morphology of the gradated coating were analyzed by means of X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The high temperature oxidation resistance of the plasma sprayed samples at 800 ℃ was investigated. The oxidation kinetics curve was obtained. The results show that the thickness of gradated coating is about 410 μm. The plasma sprayed gradated coating on stainless steel surface can improve the high temperature oxidation resistance of stainless steel. The oxidation rate of stainless steel is less than that of plasma sprayed gradated coating. The oxidation film of plasma sprayed sample is very dense and is not easily exfoliated. The dense oxidation film prevents the stainless steel from more oxidation. 展开更多

A low-diffusion Ni Re Pt Al coating((Ni,Pt)Al outer layer in addition to a Re-rich diffusion barrier layer)was prepared on a Ni_(3)Al-base single crystal(SC)superalloy via electroplating and gaseous aluminizing treatments,wherein the electroplating procedures consisted of the composite deposition of Ni-Re followed by electroplating of Pt.In order to perform a comparison with conventional Ni Al and(Ni,Pt)Al coatings,the cyclic oxidation performance of the Ni Re Pt Al coating was evaluated at 1100 and 1150℃.We observed that the oxidation resistance of the Ni Re Pt Al coating was significantly improved by the greater presence of the residualβ-Ni Al phase in the outer layer and the lesser outward-diffusion of Mo from the substrate.In addition,the coating with the Re-rich diffusion barrier demonstrated a lower extent of interdiffusion into the substrate,where the thickness of the second reaction zone(SRZ)in the substrate alloy decreased by 25%.The mechanisms responsible for improving the oxidation resistance and decreasing the extent of SRZ formation are discussed,in which a particular attention is paid to the inhibition of the outward diffusion of Mo by the Re-based diffusion barrier. 展开更多

To refrain the interdiffusion of elements while holding good oxidation resistance,a(Ni,Pt)Al/Ni composite coating was prepared by sequential treatments of electroplating Ni and Pt and successive gaseous aluminization.In comparison with normal(Ni,Pt)Al coating,high-temperature performance of the composite coating was evaluated in isothermal oxidation test at 1100℃.Both the two coatings exhibited good resistance against high-temperature oxidation,but the interdiffusion of elements between composite coating and single-crystal(SC)superalloy substrate was greatly relieved,in which the thickness of secondary reaction zone(SRZ)and the amount of precipitated topologically close-packed phase in the SC alloy matrix were significantly decreased.Mechanisms responsible for delaying rate of coating degradation and SRZ growth/propagation are discussed. 展开更多

Multilayered Pt/Ru modified aluminide coating for thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems has been investi- gated. 2μm Pt+2 μm Ru+2 μm Pt was first deposited on nickel-base superalloy DZ125 by electrodeposition, and then the coating was treated by annealing and a conventional pack-cementation aluminizing process. The cyclic oxidation tests were carried out at 1423 K in air. It was found that the thermal cyclic oxidation resistance of Pt/Ru-modified aluminide coating was comparable to that of Pt-modified aluminide coating, which was much better than simply aluminized DZ125. The addition of Ru to Pt-modified aluminide coating increased the resistance to rumpling. The microstructures and phase constitutions of the coating before and after oxidation were investigated. 展开更多

An inorganic potassium silicate coating with pigments of alumina,aluminum phosphate,NiCrAlY and copper chromite black was prepared on CB2 stainless steel.Oxidation behavior in either ambient air or O_(2)+H_(2) O mixture at 630℃ for 2000 h was comparatively studied,and the coating exhibited excellent resistance under both test conditions.The water vapor considerably accelerated the oxidation of the uncoated CB2 steel,as the hydroxide,the main constituent of the coating,had a negligible evaporation rate at test temperature,while it had a limited effect on the coated sample.Meanwhile,the existence of coating may prolong or eliminate the incubation period in the O_(2)+H_(2) O mixture at 630℃.After oxidation,the coating matrix is in an amorphous state and fillers as alumina and copper chromite black are stable in the coating.Leucite(KAlSi_(2) O_(6))formed by Al from NiCrAlY and potassium silicate in the coatings was detected after tests either in O_(2) or O_(2)+H_(2) O mixture. 展开更多

A dense and conductive LaCrO3 coating was prepared on type 316 stainless steel (316 SS), aiming at exploring its potential appli-cations in SOFC and in other high temperature environments. Powder of LaCrO3 with perovskite structure was synthesized by sol-gel method. LaCrO3 coating on 316 SS substrate was obtained by slurry coating technique. The microstructure of the coating on 316 SS after sintering in air at 800 and 900 ℃ for 200 h was characterized. The effect of LaCrO3 coating on oxidation resistance of the steel in air was also investi-gated. The results showed that the coating was adhesive to the substrate and improved greatly the oxidation resistance of the alloy. 展开更多
