A virtual Taylor impact of cellular materials is analyzed with a wave propagation technique, i.e. the Lagrangian analysis method, of which the main advantage is that no pre-assumed constitutive relationship is required. Time histories of particle velocity, local strain, and stress profiles are calculated to present the local stress-strain history curves, from which the dynamic stress-strain states are obtained. The present results reveal that the dynamic-rigid-plastic hardening (D-R-PH) material model introduced in a previous study of our group is in good agreement with the dynamic stress-strain states under high loading rates obtained by the Lagrangian analysis method. It directly reflects the effectiveness and feasibility of the D-R-PH material model for the cellular materials under high loading rates. 展开更多

This research presents an experimental study of analysis of stress strain state SSS of X-60 pipe weld joints employing magnetic anisotropy indicator of mechanical stresses Stress Vision (IMS) using of “before and after” comparison approach taking readings on pipe base metal, weld area and heat affected zone (HAZ) before and after hydrotest. Test results were compared with X-ray testing results for welded joints and with metallographic testing. Test results demonstrate the relevance of applied test conditions and redistribution of residual stresses. A new equation was established for estimating the residual (technological) and operating stresses in other pipelines with a tolerance of 15% in the field of elastic deformation (up to the yield point), according to Hooke law. 展开更多

AIN thick films were grown on c-plane sapphire substrates by hydride vapor phase epitaxy at high temperature. The evolution of the strain state and crystal quality of AIN with increase of thickness were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectra and atomic force microscopy (AFM). As the thickness increased, the stress in the epilayers decreased gradually, which was attributed to the reaction of dislocations at the first several microns in thickness. When the thickness was more than 20 μm, the stress was almost fully relaxed due to the formation of cracks. Wet etching experiments indicated that the dislocation density decreased with the increase of thickness. The AFM images showed that the density of dark spots on the surface obviously decreased and the atomic steps became straight as the thickness increased. 展开更多

Based on uniaxial tensile and plane strain deformation tests, the effects of strain states on the stability of RA (retained austenite) in medium Mn steels, which were subjected to IA (intercritical annealing) and Q&P (quenching and partitioning) processing, were investigated. The volume fractions of RA before and after deformation were measured at different equivalent strains. The transformation behaviors of RA were also investigated. The stability of RA differed across two different transformation stages at the plane strain state: the stability was much lower in the first stage than in the second stage. For the uniaxial ten sion strain state, the stability of RA corresponded only to a single transformation stage. The main reason was that there were two types of transformations from RA in the medium Mn steel for the plane strain state. One type was that the martensite originated in the strain-induced stacking faults (SISF). The other type was the strain-induced directly twin martensite at a certain equivalent strain. However, for the uniax- ial tension state, only the strain-induced twin martensite was observed. Dislocation lines and dislocation tangles were also observed in specimens deformed at different strain states. In addition, complex micro- structures of stacking faults and lath-like phases were observed within a grain at the plane strain state. 展开更多

A thorough understanding of the texture evolution of near-αtitanium alloys during the hot metal forming can help obtain an optimal crystallographic texture and material performance. The strain state has an obvious effect on the texture evolution of near-αtitanium alloys during the hot metal forming. In this paper, the texture evolution of a near-αTA15 titanium alloy during the hot metal forming under different strain states were discussed based on the crystal plasticity finite element method. It is found that the basal and prismatic slip systems are regarded as the dominant slip modes due to the similar low critical resolved shear stress during the hot metal forming of the TA15 sheet rotating the lattice around the[1010]and 0001 axis, respectively.Once both of them cannot be activated, the pyramidal-2 slipping occurs rotating the lattice around the[1010]axis.The relationship between the texture evolution and strain state is established. All the(0001)orientations form a band perpendicular to the direction of the first principal strain. The width of the band along the direction of the second principal strain depends on the ratio of the compressive effect to the tensile effect of the second principal strain. This relationship can help control the crystallographic texture and mechanical properties of the titanium alloys component during the hot metal forming. 展开更多

Electronic structure and spin-related state coupling at ferromagnetic material (FM)/MgO (FM = Fe, CoFe, CoFeB) interfaces under biaxial strain are evaluated using the first-principles calculations. The CoFeB/MgO interface, which is su- perior to the Fe/MgO and CoFe/MgO interfaces, can markedly maintain stable and effective coupling channels for majority- spin A1 state under large biaxial strain. Bonding interactions between Fe, Co, and B atoms and the electron transfer between Bloch states are responsible for the redistribution of the majority-spin A1 state, directly influencing the coupling effect for the strained interfaces. Layer-projected wave function of the majority-spin Al state suggests slower decay rate and more stable transport property in the CoFeB/MgO interface, which is expected to maintain a higher tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) value under large biaxial strain. This work reveals the internal mechanism for the state coupling al strained FM/MgO interfaces. This study may provide some references to the design and manufacturing of magnetic tunnel .junctions with high tunneling magnetoresistance effect. 展开更多

A variational method is adopted to investigate the properties of shallow impurity states near the interface in a free strained wurtzite GaN/AlxGa1-xN heterojunction under hydrostatic pressure and external electric field by using a simplified coherent potential approximation. Considering the biaxial strain due to lattice mismatch or epitaxial growth and the uniaxial strains effects, we investigated the Stark energy shift led by an external electric field for impurity states as functions of pressure as well as the impurity position, A1 component and areal electron density. The numerical result shows that the binding energy near linearly increases with pressure from 0 to 10 GPa. It is also found that the binding energy as a function of the electric field perpendicular to the interface shows an un-linear red shift or a blue shift for different impurity positions. The effect of increasing x on blue shift is more significant than that on the red shift for the impurity in the channel near the interface. The pressure influence on the Stark shift is more obvious with increase of electric field and the distance between an impurity and the interface. The increase of pressure decreases the blue shift but increases the red shift. 展开更多

The exciton states of semiconducting carbon nanotubes are calculated by a tight-binding model supplemented by Coulomb interactions under the combined effect of uniaxial strain and magnetic field. It is found that the excitation energies and absorption spectra of zigzag tubes(11,0) and(10,0) show opposite trends with the strain under the action of the magnetic field. For the(11,0) tube, the excitation energy decreases with the increasing uniaxial strain, with a splitting appearing in the absorption spectra. For the(10,0) tube, the variation trend firstly increases and then decreases, with a reversal point appearing in the absorption spectra. More interesting,at the reversal point the intensity of optical absorption is the largest because of the degeneracy of the two bands nearest to the Fermi Level, which is expected to be observed in the future experiment. The similar variation trend is also exhibited in the binding energy for the two kinds of semiconducting tubes. 展开更多

After constructing a stress and strain model, the valence bands of in-plane biaxial tensile strained Si is calculated by k·p method. In the paper we calculate the accurate anisotropy valance bands and the splitting energy between light and heavy hole bands. The results show that the valance bands are highly distorted, and the anisotropy is more obvious. To obtain the density of states (DOS) effective mass, which is a very important parameter for device modeling, a DOS effective mass model of biaxial tensile strained Si is constructed based on the valance band calculation. This model can be directly used in the device model of metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). It also a provides valuable reference for biaxial tensile strained silicon MOSFET design. 展开更多

Optimum utilization of the loading capability of engineering materials is an important and active contribution to protect nature's limited resources, and it is the key for economic design methods. In order to make use of the materials' resources, those must be known very well;but conventional test methods will offer only limited informational value. The range of questions raised is as wide as the application of engineering materials, and partially they are very specific. The development of huge computer powers enables numeric modelling to simulate structural behaviour in rather complex loading environments-so the real material behaviour is known under the given loading conditions. Here the art of material testing design starts. To study the material behaviour under very distinct and specific loading conditions makes it necessary to simulate different temperature ranges, loading speeds, environments etc.and mostly there doesn't exist any commonly agreed test standard. In this contribution two popular,non-standard test procedures and test systems will be discussed on the base of their application background, special design features as well as test results and typically gained information:The demand for highspeed tests up to 1000 s^(-1) of strain rate is very specific and originates primarily in the automotive industry and the answers enable CAE analysis of crashworthiness of vehicle structures under crash conditions. The information on the material behaviour under multiaxial loading conditions is a more general one.Multiaxial stress states can be reduced to an equivalent stress, which allows the evaluation of the material's constraint and criticality of stress state. Both discussed examples shall show that the open dialogue between the user and the producer of testing machines allows custom-tailored test solutions. 展开更多

Based on[1],the stress structures of the smooth region and shear lip of the specimens have been investigated in the paper. The characteristics of the stress structure in the smooth region have been found that the variable z can separated out;the stresses in the midsection can be obtained by the plane strain FEM results or HRR structure modified by the stress triaxiality. The effects of load level and thickness on the stress structure can be reflected by the distribution of CTOD along the thickness direction. The obtained expressions of the stresses are very simple and visualized. The analyses of the stress structure in the shear lip show that the stresses can be obtained by different methods of interpolation to a certain precise degree.A new degree parameter of the plane strain state has been put forward and studied. The parameter can reflect relatively well the variation of the kind and thickness of the specimen as well as the load level. The fracture parameter has also been investigated to be sure that it can be obtained by modified CTOD with the stress triaxiality. 展开更多

Based on the theory of concrete structure, a new expression was derived for lagged strain of fiber-reinforced polymer (FLIP) laminates in reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with FRP. The influence of different preloaded states and nonlinear stress-strain relationship of compressed concrete were both taken into account in this approach. Then a simplified expression was given by ignoring tensile resistance of concrete. Comparison of analytical predictions with experimental results indicates satisfactory accuracy of the procedures. The errors are less than 8% and 10% respectively when the tensile resistance of concrete is or not considered. While the maximum error of existing procedures is up to 60%. 展开更多

The resistance to crack propagation at earlier stage for a high strength structural steel with certain ductility and its correlation to microstructures, stress states, deformation history and strain characteristics have been investigated. The resistance to crack propagation is mainly de- termined by the plastic constrain ahead of the crack tip,the elastic energy and plastic work absorbed in the stress-strain field. These are connected with the state function of triaxial stress. The deformation history and strain characteristic during deformation of material are described by the flow line in which the deformation history and strain characteristic restrain the crack initiation at stage Ⅱ and the crack propagation at stage Ⅲ.The strain hardening rate may sensitively reflect the stress distribution and micro-fracture mechanism in the interi- or of material. 展开更多

The effects of the deformation temperature, strain rate and the microstructure were studied. Two strain rates(1s -1and 0.1s -1) and six deformation temperatures (600℃, 720℃ , 780℃, 900℃, 1000℃ and 1100℃) were chosen. The stress—strain curve exhibits a peak at low strain and then decreases to a plateau before it starts to increase again as the strain increases. The stress required for deformation at lower strain rate and at higher deformation temperatures is less than those at higher strain rate and at lower deformation temperatures. Four mechanisms of semi-solid deformation can be used to explain the different behaviors of the stress—strain curves under different conditions. 展开更多

The work deals with the epitaxial PbSe layers grown on the KCl substrates by the method of “hot-wall” molecular epitaxy over the range of layer thicknesses of 20 - 2000 nm. Special emphasis is put on the values of elastic deformations that could be generated and frozen in epitaxial layers with the aim of influencing their energy spectra and optical properties. The maximum deformation at layers tension made up 57% of the initial mismatch between the layer and the substrate (ε = Δa/a = 0.015). In such a solid-state structure effective “negative” pressure is realized, which is justified by increase in the tangential lattice constant and the forbidden gap width. This width correlates with the tangential lattice constant (deformation) and corresponds to certain values of definite frequencies of direct electron transitions across the forbidden gap. 展开更多

Although coal swelling/shrinking during coal seam gas extraction has been studied for decades, its impacts on the evolution of permeability are still not well understood. This has long been recognized, but no satisfactory solutions have been found. In previous studies,it is normally assumed that the matrix swelling/shrinking strain can be split between the fracture and the bulk coal and that the splitting coefficient remains unchanged during gas sorption. In this study,we defined the fracture strain as a function of permeability change ratio and back-calculated the fracture strains at different states. In the equilibrium state, the gas pressure is steady within the coal;in the non-equilibrium state, the gas pressure changes with time. For equilibrium states, the back-calculated fracture strains are extremely large and may be physically impossible in some case. For non-equilibrium states, two experiments were conducted:one for a natural coal sample and the other for a reconstructed one.For the fractured coal, the evolution of permeability is primarily controlled by the transition of coal fracture strain or permeability from local matrix swelling effect to global effect. For the reconstituted coal, the evolution of pore strain or permeability is primarily controlled by the global effect. 展开更多
