Methods: 182 postmenopausal women were selected from Guangxi Province of China. Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) was used to evaluate BMD. Grip dynamometer to assess muscle strength. Height, weight and muscle mass of each part were measured by body composition measuring instrument. Body mass index (BMI), skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and limb skeletal muscle mass (SM) were calculated according to the measurement results. Results: BUA, grip strength and SMI in postmenopausal women of Zhuang nationality showed a decreasing trend with age (p p p r = 0.305, p Conclusion: With the increase of age, the decline rate of muscle strength of postmenopausal Zhuang women in Guangxi is slower than that of BMD and muscle mass. BACKGROUND There is limited evidence regarding the association between muscle strength and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD).AIM To investigate the association between muscle strength and MAF...BACKGROUND There is limited evidence regarding the association between muscle strength and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD).AIM To investigate the association between muscle strength and MAFLD in the general population in Korea.METHODS This nationwide representative cross-sectional study included 31649 individuals aged≥19 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2015 and 2018.Odds ratios(ORs)and 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)for MAFLD according to sex-specific quartiles of muscle strength,defined by relative handgrip strength,were calculated using multivariable logistic regression analysis.Additionally,multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between muscle strength and probable liver fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.RESULTS Of all the participants,29.3%had MAFLD.The prevalence of MAFLD was significantly higher in the lower muscle strength quartile groups for all participants,sexes,and age groups(P<0.001).A 1.92-fold(OR=1.92,95%CI:1.70–2.16)and 3.12-fold(OR=3.12,95%CI:2.64–3.69)higher risk of MAFLD was observed in the lowest quartile(Q1)group than in the other groups(Q2–Q4)and the highest quartile(Q4)group,respectively.The ORs of MAFLD were significantly increased in the lower muscle strength quartile groups in a dose-dependent manner(P for trend<0.001).These associations persisted in both sexes.An inverse association between muscle strength and the risk of MAFLD was observed in all subgroups according to age,obesity,and diabetes mellitus.In patients with MAFLD,the odds of severe liver fibrosis were higher in Q1(OR=1.83,95%CI:1.25–2.69)than in other groups(Q2–Q4).CONCLUSION Among Korean adults,low muscle strength was associated with an increased risk of MAFLD and liver fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.展开更多

METHODS To determine possible central(chronotropic responses, cardi...AIM To study exercise capacity and determinants of early peak oxygen consumption(VO_(2peak)) in a cohort of de novo heart transplant(HTx) recipients. METHODS To determine possible central(chronotropic responses, cardiopulmonary and hemodynamic function) and peripheral factors(muscular exercise capacity and body composition) predictive of VO_(2peak), a number of different measurements and tests were performed, as follows: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET) was performed mean 11 wk after surgery in 81 HTx recipients > 18 years and was measured with breath by breath gas exchange on a treadmill or bicycle ergometer. Metabolic/respiratory measures include VO_(2peak) and VE/VCO2 slope. Additional measures included muscle strength testing, bioelectrical impedance analysis, echocardiography, blood sampling and health-related quality of life. Based on the VO_(2peak)(mL/kg per minute) median value, the study population was divided into two groups defined as a low-capacity group and a high-capacity group. Potential predictors were analyzed using multiple regression analysis with VO_(2peak)(L/min) as the dependent variable.RESULTS The mean ± standard deviation(SD) age of the total study population was 49 ± 13 years, and 73% were men. This de novo HTx cohort demonstrated a median VO_(2peak) level of 19.4 mL/kg per min at 11 ± 1.8 wk postHTx. As compared with the high-capacity group, the low-capacity group exercised for a shorter time, had lower maximal ventilation, O_2 pulse, peak heart rate and heart rate reserve, while the VE/VCO_2 slope was higher. The low-capacity group had less muscle strength and muscular exercise capacity in comparison with the highcapacity group. In order of importance, O_2 pulse, heart rate reserve, muscular exercise capacity, body mass index, gender and age accounted for 84% of the variance in VO_(2peak)(L/min). There were no minor or major serious adverse events during the CPET. CONCLUSION Although there is great individual variance among de novo HTx recipients, early VO_(2peak) measures appear to be influenced by both central and peripheral factors.展开更多
Aging is associated with numerous physiological,musculoskeletal,and neurological impairments including a loss of muscle,strength,function,bone mineral,and cognition.Strength training is an effective intervention to co...Aging is associated with numerous physiological,musculoskeletal,and neurological impairments including a loss of muscle,strength,function,bone mineral,and cognition.Strength training is an effective intervention to counter these age-associated declines.In addition,creatine supplementation is purported to enhance strength training gains in lean tissue mass,muscular strength,and function.There is emerging evidence that creatine combined with strength training can alter bone geometry and cognitive performance.The purpose of this review is to update previous meta-analyses examining creatine combined with strength training on lean tissue mass and bone density compared to strength training and placebo.A secondary purpose was to explore the effects of creatine and strength training on cognition.Updated meta-analyses revealed that creatine enhances lean tissue mass(mean difference[MD]:1.18 kg,95%CI:0.70–1.67;p<0.00001)and upper body muscular strength(standard mean difference[SMD]:0.24,95%CI:0.05–0.43;p=0.02)compared to strength training and placebo.Creatine combined with strength training had no greater effects compared to strength training and placebo on lower body muscular strength(SMD:0.17,95%CI:−0.03–0.38;p=0.09),whole-body(MD:−0.00 g cm−2;95%CI:−0.01–0.00,p=0.32),femoral neck(MD:−0.00 g cm−2;95%CI:−0.01–0.00,p=1.00),or lumbar bone mineral density(MD:0.00 g cm−2,95%CI:−0.01–0.01;p=045).There is preliminary evidence that combining strength training and creatine is an effective strategy to improve bone geometry in postmenopausal females and cognitive function in older adults.Overall,the combination of creatine and strength training has favorable effects on lean tissue mass and upper body strength.In contrast,creatine combined with strength training does not enhance lower-body strength or bone mineral.展开更多
