A notch of finite thickness in these materials is also addressed. Four idealized electromagnetic boundary conditions assumed for the crack-faces are separately investigated, i.e. (a) electrically and magnetically impermeable (crack-face), (b) electrically impermeable and magnetically permeable, (c) electrically permeable and magnetically impermeable, and (d) electrically and magnetically permeable. The influence of the notch thickness on important parameters, such as the field intensity factors, the energy release rate at the notch tips and the electromagnetic fields inside the notch, are studied and the results are obtained in closed-form. Results under different idealized electromagnetic boundary conditions on the crack-face are compared, and the applicability of these idealized assumptions is discussed.展开更多

Different samples of raw earth from 3 sites were taken in the commune of Mlomp. Geotechnical tests showed that the raw earth samples from sites 2 and 3 have more clay fraction while site 1 contains more sand. The fact of integrating fibers from crushed palm leaves (Borassus aethiopum) (2%, 4% and 6%) into the 3 raw earth samples reduced the mechanical resistance to compression and traction of the 3 raw earths. The experimental results of thermal tests on samples of earth mixtures with crushed Palma leaf fibers show a decrease in thermal conductivity as well as thermal effusivity as the percentages increase (2%, 4% and 6%) of fibers in raw earth for the 3 sites. This shows that this renewable composite material can help improve the thermal insulation of building envelopes.展开更多

Geological matter, soil and clay in nature, geo-structure, concrete, etc. are practical ex- amples among them. From the microscopic view, a lo- cal region in the medium is occupied by particles with small but finite sizes and granular material is naturally modeled as an assembly of discrete particles in contacts On the other hand, the local region is identified with a material point in the overall structure and this discon- tinuous medium can then be represented by an effective continuum on the macroscopic level展开更多

A theoretical SAW propagation model is set up to characterize the periodic porous dielectrics by transversely isotropic symmetry. The theoretical deductions of SAW propagating in the low-k film/Si substrate layered structure are given in detail. The dispersive characteristics of SAW in differ- ent propagation directions and the effects of the Young's moduli E, E′ and shear modulus G′ of the films on these dispersive curves are found. Computational results show that E′ and G′ cannot be measured along the propagation direction that is perpendicular to the nano-pores' direction.展开更多

The emergence and propagation of the crack, and the fracture behavior in materials have been observed and studied. It is found that in the case of the tensile test, the crack emerged in SiC fiber initially. In the case of the strong cohesion of the fiber-metal interface, the crack propagated in the fiber, meanwhile the fibers in the neighborhood of the cracked fiber began to crack and the Mg-Al metal deformed plastically, and at last the material fractured. Otherwise the toughness of the materials grows in the case of the lower cohesion of the fiber-metal matrix interface.展开更多

Results under different idealized electromagnetic boundary conditions on the crack-face are compared, and the applicability of these idealized assumptions is discussed.

文摘The existence of joints or other kinds of discontinuities has a dramatic efect on the stability of rock excavations and engineering. As a result,a great challenge in rock mass mechanics testing is to prepare rock or rock-like samples with defects. In recent years,3D printing technology has become a promising tool in the feld of rock mass mechanics and engineering. This study frst reviews and discusses the research status of traditional test methods in rock mass mechanics tests of making rock samples with defects. Then, based on the comprehensive analysis of previous research, the application of 3D printing technology in rock mass mechanics is expounded from the following three aspects. The frst is the printing material.Although there are many materials for 3D printing,it has been found that 3D printing materials that can be used for rock mass mechanics research are very limited. After research,we summarize and evaluate printing material that can be used for rock mass mechanics studies. The second is the printing methodology, which mainly introduces the current application forms of 3D printing technology in rock mass mechanics. This includes printed precise casting molds and one-time printed samples. The last one is the printing model, which includes small-scale samples for mechanical tests and large-scale physical models. Then, the benefts and drawbacks of using 3D printing samples in mechanical tests and the validity of their simulation of real rock are discussed.Compared with traditional rock samples collected in nature or synthetic rock-like samples, the samples made by 3D printing technology have unique advantages, such as higher test repeatability, visualization of rock internal structure and stress distribution. There is thus great potential for the use of 3D printing in the feld of rock mass mechanics.However,3D printing materials also have shortcomings, such as insufcient material strength and accuracy at this stage. Finally, the application prospect of 3D printing technology in rock mass mechanics research is proposed.

文摘The complexity of a rock masses structure can lead to high uncertainties and risk during underground engineering construction.Laboratory tests on fractured rock-like materials containing a tunnel were conducted, and twodimensional particle flow models were established. The principal stress and principal strain distributions surrounding the four-arc-shaped and inverted U-shaped tunnels were investigated, respectively.Numerical results indicated that the dip angle combination of preexisting fractures directly affects the principal stress, principal strain distribution and the failure characteristics around the tunnel. The larger the absolute value of the preexisting fracture inclination angle, the higher the crushing degree of compression splitting near the hance and the larger the V-shaped failure zone. With a decrease in the absolute value of the preexisting fracture inclination angle, the compressive stress concentration of the sidewall with preexisting fractures gradually increases. The types of cracks initiated around the four-arc-shaped tunnel and the inverted U-shape tunnel are different. When the fractures are almost vertical, they have a significant influence on the stress of the sidewall force of the four-arc-shaped tunnel. When the fractures are almost horizontal, they have a significant influence on the stress of the sidewall of the inverted U-shaped tunnel. The findings provide a theoretical support for the local strengthening design of the tunnel supporting structure.

文摘The objective of this study is to seek solutions to reduce the impact of buildings on climate change and to promote the use of local bio-sourced or geo-sourced materials for sustainable construction. This shows that this renewable composite material can help improve the thermal insulation of building envelopes.

文摘The exceptional physical properties and unique layered structure of two-dimensional(2D)materials have made this class of materials great candidates for applications in electronics, energy conversion/storage devices, nanocomposites, and multifunctional coatings, among others. At the center of this application space, mechanical properties play a vital role in materials design, manufacturing, integration and performance. The emergence of 2D materials has also sparked broad scientific inquiry, with new understanding of mechanical interactions between 2D structures and interfaces being of great interest to the community.Building on the dramatic expansion of recent research activities, here we review significant advances in the understanding of the elastic properties,in-plane failures, fatigue performance, interfacial shear/friction,and adhesion behavior of 2D materials. In this article, special emphasis is placed on some new 2D materials, novel characterization techniques and computational methods,as well as insights into deformation and failure mechanisms.A deep understanding of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that govern 2D material mechanics is further provided,in the hopes that the community may draw design strategies for structural and interfacial engineering of 2D material systems. We end this review article with a discussion of our perspective on the state of the field and outlook on areas for future research directions.
文摘The concept of soft matter was first introduced by P. G. de Gennes in his acceptance speech for the No-bel Physics Prize in 1991. In mechanics community, however, people usually prefer using soft material in-stead of soft matter to describe the material whose en-ergy associated with thermal motion is comparative to the interaction energy. Unlike in the conventional con-densed matter, entropy plays an important and even de-terminative role in soft materials.
文摘Most of granular materials are highly heteroge- neous, composed of voids and particles with different sizes and shapes. Geological matter, soil and clay in nature, geo-structure, concrete, etc. are practical ex- amples among them. From the microscopic view, a lo- cal region in the medium is occupied by particles with small but finite sizes and granular material is naturally modeled as an assembly of discrete particles in contacts On the other hand, the local region is identified with a material point in the overall structure and this discon- tinuous medium can then be represented by an effective continuum on the macroscopic level
文摘Recently, intelligent or smart materials and structures have been received more and more attention due to their distinguished multi-field coupling properties and wide applications in aerospace, automobiles, civil structures, medical devices, information storage, energy harvesting and so on. It is of academic challenge to fully understand the complex multi-field coupling behaviors of various smart materials and structures, and of engineering sig- nificance to enhance the performance and reliability of these materials and structures in industrial applications. The papers in the special topic of Mechanics of Intelligent Materials and Structures focus on the understanding of the electromechanical, magneto-elastic, and magneto-rheological coupling behav- iors and properties of smart materials and structures for applications in vibration control, resonators, and various functional devices.
文摘The influence of the distribution of nano-pores on the mechanical properties evaluation of porous low-k films by surface acoustic waves (SAW) is studied. Computational results show that E′ and G′ cannot be measured along the propagation direction that is perpendicular to the nano-pores' direction.
文摘The mechanical properties of the SiC fiber-reinforced Mg-Al metal matrix composite materials have been studied on internal microstructure by (scanning electron microscopy) SEM in-situ tensile test. Otherwise the toughness of the materials grows in the case of the lower cohesion of the fiber-metal matrix interface.
