This excerpt demonstrates Prof. Sanchez’s efforts in and views of poetic craftsmanship. As a poet who has been experimenting with various poetic forms like the blues and jazz poems, the sonnet, and the haiku, and reshaping them into her own forms, she believes that a poet has the freedom of choosing form. For her, different forms serve different purposes, and the efforts in the innovation and renovation of forms not only serve the construction of the poem but also express the joy and freedom of writing. Musicality, embodied in the structure, writing, and typographical arrangement of her poems, is a remarkable feature, which, she believes, crosses genders and colors and serves as a means of communication among peoples. Black English, especially the urban black vernacular, is largely used in her poems to exhibit and celebrate the black existence in America and to serve the growth of humanity. Her pursuit in poetic craftsmanship registers her spiritual freedom, self-affirmation and self-pride as a female African American poet.展开更多

In his view, freedom is not only an indispensable element of an individual's life, but also fully applicable to the course of social and historical developm ent. Liang Qichao 's liberalism originates directly from the West, but is deeply influenced by the Chinese traditional discourse system and the overwhelming reality context of saving the nation in modern tim es.What is different from Western liberalism is that the dim ensions of Liang Qichao 's freedom are developed at two levels, one is the individual level, the other is the national level. The form er has the significance of enlightenm ent, while the latter has the significance of saving lives. Enlightenm ent and salvation are not only the"double variations"of modern C hina, but also the dual responsibility of modern Chinese enlightenm ent thinkers, which is dem-onstrated in Liang Qichao 's thought of freedom.展开更多

In order to achieve this goal, I have used several critical theories of authors such as: Michel Foucault, Carl Jung, and Pierre Bourdieu. The analysis is concerned with exploring the alternation between the themes of freedom and imprisonment and the way in which these issues influence the evolution of the main character. I argue that the two themes are in a relation of interdependency and they can be interpreted as opposites from a rational point of view. The rational point of view, although valuable, is, however, incomplete without the exploration of the emotional and subjective factor. This factor can account for the "unreasonable" events from a broader perspective: that of the imagination. As Michel Foucault argues, power exists only in action. Power is also a rather elusive concept. In the same way, the perception of reality can be represented more accurately from a subjective point of view. More exactly, reality is constructed with every thought, emotion, and action of the individual. To sum up, I argue that, from a sociological point of view, the main character is striving to assimilate his personality in a new and hostile cultural environment. On the other hand, from a psychological point of view, he is confronting his inner shadow, as Carl Jung defines the hidden part of the personality. This has a result of the emergence of a genuine sense of self. As the critic Pierre Bourdieu argues, there are a set of common characteristics of taste which define the social belonging of an individual. In the analyzed novel the character manages to adapt to the new situation and to overcome the obstacles that he finds on his way.展开更多

Blixen-Finecke worldwide fame because the novel caused wide public concern among both critics and readers. The story unfolds a poetic picture which reveals the natural peace and harmony in Africa through the narrative angle of the heroine--Karen Blixen. In Out of Africa, the author, from multipoint viepoints, knits the legendary plot to display a picture of a community with the features of spiritual utopia, which is an ideal place for men to escape from the outside disturbance. The present paper, first, gives a brief introduction to the plot of the story. Then, it discusses the characteristics of spiritual utopian community on the African land from the following three perspectives: Karen Blixen is a pursuer to go after self-integrity so as to protect the harmony of spiritual utopian land in Africa; Africans are the paragons of self-integrity to pursue freedom on their homeland; and the western settlers are the dominators who have lost self-integrity in the spiritual utopian community because they have almost destroyed the ecological and social banlance on African land.展开更多
