The Application of Stylistics on College English Teaching

Stylistics is the description and analysis of the variability of linguistic forms in actual language use. The concepts of 'style' and 'stylistic variation' in language rest on the general assumption that within the language system, the same content can be encoded in more than one linguistic form. Operating at all linguistic levels (e.g.lexicology,syntax, text linguistics, and intonation), stylisticians analyze both the style of specific texts and stylistic variation across texts. These texts can be literary or nonliterary in nature. Considering all the disadvantages in the college English teaching, it is necessary that stylistics be applied on the college English teaching, which can stimulate students' learning, improve their cognitive English knowledge and relive their interest on English.

An Analysis of Speech and Thought Presentation in “A Sunrise on theVeld” from Stylistics Perspective

Application of Stylistics in English Intensive Reading

Stylistic study concerns itself with the situational features that influence variations in language use,the criterion for the classification of language variety,and the description and interpretation of the linguistic features and functions of the main varieties(both literary and non-literary) of a language.At present,it is still a controversial topic about the difference between the literature and the non-literature.Actually,the boundary between the literary and the non-literary is not very clear,but vague.If we apply the language of exquisite AD to the literature class and discuss them together with poetry,its "literariness" and "aesthetic value" will not be less awe-inspiring.

Novel Machine Learning–Based Approach for Arabic Text Classification Using Stylistic and Semantic Features

Text classification is an essential task for many applications related to the Natural Language Processing domain.It can be applied in many fields,such as Information Retrieval,Knowledge Extraction,and Knowledge modeling.Even though the importance of this task,Arabic Text Classification tools still suffer from many problems and remain incapable of responding to the increasing volume of Arabic content that circulates on the web or resides in large databases.This paper introduces a novel machine learning-based approach that exclusively uses hybrid(stylistic and semantic)features.First,we clean the Arabic documents and translate them to English using translation tools.Consequently,the semantic features are automatically extracted from the translated documents using an existing database of English topics.Besides,the model automatically extracts from the textual content a set of stylistic features such as word and character frequencies and punctuation.Therefore,we obtain 3 types of features:semantic,stylistic and hybrid.Using each time,a different type of feature,we performed an in-depth comparison study of nine well-known Machine Learning models to evaluate our approach and used a standard Arabic corpus.The obtained results show that Neural Network outperforms other models and provides good performances using hybrid features(F1-score=0.88%).

Story Theme in Literary Stylistics and Functional Stylistics

Story Theme has been one of the major concepts in both literary criticism study and stylistic study.The essential characteristics of story theme might be summarized as being subjective and inter-subjective,social and generalized,pervasive throughout the whole text but covered,conventional and recoverable,and multi-faceted.This paper mainly discusses two stylistic approaches to story theme study.Literary stylistic approach focuses on the covert side and multi-levelness of story theme;while functional stylistics attaches much importance to the mechanisms that function to realize story theme.

Literature and the Teaching of Stylistics： An Investigation Into the Pragmatics of Community Formation in the Educational Context of Namibia

The author＇s paper is an attempt to investigate the success of the pedagogy of stylistics and pedagogical stylistics in the Namibian context. As an applied linguistics course, stylistics is eminently suitable for study and analysis of literature, because it clearly explicates literary effects through linguistic analysis. Many scholars have illustrated the use of stylistics analysis for the purposes of studying literature and teaching it, which is, pedagogical stylistics. However, this paper combines both the study of Stylistics as a discipline, which is the pedagogy of Stylistics, and the use of stylistics for teaching literature in general and poetry in particular. Namibia adopted English as its official language 22 years ago. Since then, both teachers and students have been struggling with the analysis of poetry. This study is an empirical one using qualitative methods in the author＇s research to determine the impact of the study of Stylistics on the understanding and teaching of literature in Namibia. The author uses traditional British poetry from the 16th century up to the 20th century alongside postcolonial poetry to assess the importance of culture in understanding poetry and examine the advantage of using stylistics to teach the poems that the author selects.

This paper makes a comparative study of three Chinese versions of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four by applying the theories and methodologies of literary stylistics and narratology.The study first scrutinizes the distinctive stylistic features and narrative forms of the source text(ST)and then continues to examine whether these features and forms are successfully represented in the target text(TT).Moreover,it seeks to answer the questions of why“deceptive equivalence”occurs and how the“literariness”in the fiction can be retained and stylistic equivalence can be achieved in translation.

Phonological Metaphors in Stylistics Analysis

It is a branch of linguistics concerned with the study of characteristic choices in use of language, made by different individuals or social groups in different situations of use. A Corpus-Based Study on the Translators’Styles in the English Versions of The True Story of Ah-Q

The True Story of Ah-Q written by Lu Xun has been translated into forty different languages,making great contributions to the external dissemination of Chinese culture.This paper adopts the corpus stylistics method to analyze the translators’styles presented by William A.Lyell and Julia Lovell’s translations of Ah-Q.Based on the self-built comparable corpus of the two translations,the paper investigates and analyzes them from the lexical and sentence level.In terms of vocabulary,the translations are statistically analyzed from the standardized type-token ratio,word frequency,word length and vocabulary density;at the sentence level,the article studies the average sentence lengths and sentence complexity.The first major finding is that Lovell’s vocabulary is richer than that of Lyell,and Lovell’s average word length is longer.Also,the average sentence length of both translations exceeds the original text,and Lovell has the highest average sentence length.Secondly,Lovell prefers to use simple sentences while Lyell prefers complex sentences.Nevertheless,both of them strive to make Lu Xun’s works understandable to foreign readers,thus understanding Chinese culture better.

史传文体之“作”与“修”的矛盾

史传与诸子在《汉书·艺文志》中属于文献分类,而在《文心雕龙》里则属于文体分类,当然纪昀对此早就提出质疑。从文体论看,史传必须保持求真实和树大义的文体特点,以《春秋左氏传》为例,其间“《春秋》大义”与“因鲁史”就构成孔子之《春秋》的文体应有之标准,即使实录也离不开善恶是非等大义之表达,若《春秋》无大义,则一部《春秋》将黯淡无光。因而衍生出历史上存在的孔子“作《春秋》”与“修《春秋》”两种不同叙事,从经学和史学两个角度辨析其所指。从史传文体特征而论,一方面孔子作《春秋》,凸显其当一部大法的原创性价值;另一方面孔子修《春秋》却是兼顾史家思想和史料的最佳结合,以至于达到游夏之徒不能赞一辞的绝对高度。然而,从孔子到左丘明以降,以至《史记》《汉书》,史家和史料之因缘际会,却都存在着因人而异性,或不确定性,因而由宋儒请传统《春秋》学走下神坛。于是《史记》《汉书》等史书,因其人为作品之性质,显示了史家、史料诸端局限性的史学困境,这也正是史传文体所遭遇永恒的矛盾和困惑。
