As the emergence of conversion to aspect of culture in the study of translation, the subjectivity of translator is widely discussed. Translator is inevitably influenced by his/her own language and system of culture in the process of translation. In order to make readers understand what is translated, a translator needs to bring subjectivity into play to make translated text conform to custom of his/her own language and system of culture. The study of subjectivity is mainly concentrated on understanding of original text and recreating of art on the level of linguistics. This paper studies the problem of subjectivity in the process of translation from translational norms, subjectivity, aim and creativity.

A Survey of Engagement, Subjectivity and Inter-subjectivity

Engagement and subjectivity focus on the non-propositional meaning of discourse, and inter-subjectivity is concerned with the relationship between a writer/speaker and his potential readers/addressees. This article first introduces the definitions of engagement, subjectivity and inter-subjectivity, and then attempts to discuss the relationships among them. The analysis shows that subjectivity and inter-subjectivity are closely related and that the process of engagement is an interaction of speaking subject and his/her potential readers and social behavior of inter-subjectivity and social practice as well.

A Study on the Translator's Subjectivity of Wolf Totem

The translator, as the main body of a translation, has been in an invisible and ignored state for a long time. The position of the translator has been improved and the role of the translator has begun to be recognized since the field of translation studies multifaceted and deepened. In order to analyze the translator's subjectivity better, the thesis states comprehensive definitions of the translator's subjectivity and uses Wolf Totem as a case study, whose author is Jiang Rong and the translator is Howard Goldblatt, to show that how the translator Howard Goldblatt utilizes his subjectivity in the translation process.

Throughout the past years, the important role of translators has always been overlooked. The invisibility was even taken as one of the standards of a good translator. However, great change happens, especially after the"culture turn"in translation study and the role of the translators has been laid emphasis on. This kind of sharp change has led to two extreme thoughts on this issue: scholars choose either total invisibility or complete subjectivity. This paper puts forward an inter-subjective system, in which the subjectivity should be emphasized only with constraints. The other subjects in the inter-subjective system contribute to the restriction of the subjectivity of the translator during the translation process.By writing this paper, the author wishes to present a comprehensive and balanced way of understanding translators' subjectivity. Therefore, no matter analyzing the translation process or evaluating translation products, people will be more objective towards the role of translators.

On Translator＇s Subjectivity in the Chinese Version of Pride and Prejudice Translated by Wang Keyi

As the center and subject of the translation, translator＇ s subjectivity plays a great role in translation research and more and more attention has been aroused. Since the first version of Pride and Prejudice came into being, Chinese translators have begun to show great interest in translating this novel, and there are more than ten translated Chinese versions now. Scholars have conducted a lot of research about this novel and its various translated versions. Among all these Chinese versions, Wang Keyi＇ s version is relatively earlier and is also the most popular one. Thus, it attracts many readers＇ eyes and there are increasing comments and studies on this version. There are also studies analyzing or comparing several versions from the perspective of translator＇ s subjectivity. While, few articles are published to analyze this version from the three elements of translator＇ s subjectivity： initiatives, passiveness, and purposiveness. They are also three basic features of translator＇ s subjectivity, in which translator＇ s subjectivity reflects. It is also the three features that consist of the translator＇ s subjectivity. Therefore, the comprehensive and intensive research of translator＇ s subjectivity in the Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice has great realistic meaning and practical values.

On Yangbi's Translation of Vanity Fair from the Perspective of Translators' Subjectivity

Translation is the bridge between the source language and the target language,while the translator is the media through which all the expected equivalents are found,all the levels of the source texts,from specific lexical level to the whole style level are changed smoothly into target language,and thus makes translation possible. In this essay,the present author will mainly focus on some different versions of translation of Vanity Fair,and through comparison,some distinct superiority of Yangbi's version are shown. Tao Te Ching is chosen as the object of this study due to its everlasting charm and profound thoughts within 5000 characters.The thesis chooses versions translated by Arthur Waley(1889～1966),James Legge(1815～1897),Lin Yutang(1895～1976) and Gu Zheng kun(1951～) as the study cases on the account of their different cultural background and historical context,and also of their respective pur poses and interpretations.The translation products of these four translators are selected to analyze the subjectivity played by each of them and to explore to which extent the style and characteristics of the translators could influence the translation versions.
