It could be regarded as a branch of translation and often employs translation theories and strategies when carrying out the blingual task. However, there are several other factors that from media industry and administration need to be combined with translation during the process of subtitling. This paper uses the Italian movie"The Scientific Card Player"as an example to give an analysis of several factors which are involved in movie subtitling, including the poly-semiotic nature of audiovisual material, movie censorship, subtitling and translating techniques and strategies. 展开更多

Language Transfer on Screen Subtitling in Slovenia: Tradition vs. Globalization

Considering the fact that dubbing costs ten times as much as subtitling, Slovenia... Subtitling has a very different role in countries with millions of people speaking their language and in small countries like Slovenia. Considering the fact that dubbing costs ten times as much as subtitling, Slovenia has traditionally turned to subtitling in order to present foreign TV and film production to the audiences. The development of subtitling after WWll can be divided into two periods: before and after 1990, for obvious reasons. During the first period that started in the 1950s, the stress was on quality all along, additionally spurned by the development of technology. TV Ljubljana with its group of pro fessional translators was the leading motor of progress in this field. The translators were all college-educated and willing to study new technologies that on the one hand made their work less time-consuming and on the other more prone to direct peer criticism. Computer technology, even though the beginnings now resemble the age of dinosaurs, made a big difference. The University of Ljubljana established a translation department that worked closely with the TV translation department, thus linking theory and practice in the best of possible ways. All the efforts were centred on quality. Democracy, however, gradually transferred the stress onto quantity. The newly-established commercial TV houses started lowering translation fees, encouraging competition not in quality but in lower prices. Globalization brought a few international subtitling firms on the Slovene market, causing a drastic drop in translation fees. The best translators /bund other job opportunities while subtitling done by non-expert translators and inexperienced students can most often be described as "anything goes". The trouble is that the number of subtitles that a TV viewer reads per year amounts to a book of approximately a thousand pages. That means that bad translations on TV screens influence the quality level of language among the users, especially among young viewers devoted to the consumption of fast food and fast culture. The increasingly popular permissive view of language use at our universities is causing a drop in language standards and norms. It is a vicious circle that will be difficult to break. 展开更多

This study aims at investigating errors which occur in the subtitling of discourse markers from English into Arabic in the subtitles of two movies,Wonder and Seven.Specifically,this study investigates the subtitling of five discourse markers,namely,well,yeah,you know,so,and oh by two movie websites,Netflix and Egybest.The findings reveal that two major errors occurred in the subtitles of the two movies,which are omission and wrong equivalence.The findings also show that omission occurred more frequently than wrong equivalence when subtitling these five discourse markers from English into Arabic. 展开更多

TSCS: A blockchain-based tokenized subtitling crowdsourcing system

The language barrier is the biggest obstacle for users watching foreign-language videos.Because of this,videos cannot be famous across borders,and their viewership is limited to a single language and culture.The easiest way to solve this problem is to add subtitles in the language of the viewer.However,the current subtitling system lacks incentives,the ability to build a secure transaction environment,and a trusting relationship between video creators and subtitling makers.In response to the above situation,a tokenized subtitling crowdsourcing system(TSCS)based on blockchain and smart contract technologies is proposed.The source files for the subtitles are stored on the inter-planetary file system(IPFS)in the proposed system.Based on the ERC-721 standard,the returned corresponding address and subtitling-related information are made into a non-fungible token(NFT).At the same time,depending on the expected revenue from video view counts,the video token(VT),based on the ERC-777 standard and endorsed by the video platform,will be used as the payment token.The TSCS has two payment strategies:one-time and dividend.Through such a settlement mechanism,the subtitling maker’s revenue is also guaranteed by the code invariance and rule certainty of smart contract deployment.On the other hand,introducing an incentive mechanism for viewers to audit subtitles enables community autonomy,thus increasing the applicability of subtitles and the activity of users. 展开更多

Translation is an important communication skill between different languages.In modern society,audiovisual products are distributed to worldwide areas as a popular means of mass media.As the globalization of economy and culture is advancing in the new century,audiovisual subtitle translation plays an increasingly important part.Good subtitles can enhance the audience’s experience of appreciating foreign films and make cultural communication more effective.This thesis conducts a brief survey on the strategies for film subtitle translation using the case study of the famous film The Shawshank Redemption.In this paper,based on Skopos theory,the author made a comprehensive analysis of subtitling activities and pointed out that subtitling,as a specialized area of translation,is not only guided by translation studies but also under the constraints of film properties.The Skopos theory of film subtitle translation is to provide,within the constraints of time and space,a well-translated subtitle that can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen.In short,the end justifies the means.Therefore,during the process of subtitle translation,the subtitler should take all the factors into consideration to identify the translation purpose,and then adopt corresponding translation strategies.From this perspective,the author takes the Skopos theory as instruction and applies the reduction and addition method to analyze the film subtitle translation.In the age of globalization,foreign films are increasingly entering people’s lives.Watching foreign films is a popular and effective way to understand foreign cultures.However,in China,subtitle translation has not attracted as much academic attention as it deserves and few theories could be appropriately applied to subtitle translation.Therefore,the author hopes that subtitle translation could be paid more attention in terms of cross-cultural communication. 展开更多

Based on Fillmore’s frame theory, this paper examines the translator’s cognitive frame operation in the English subtitle translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage application documentary. It analyzes and discusses how the translator maximizes translation effect between the source language and the target language, so as to enhance the readability of documentary subtitles and promote the spread of traditional Chinese culture. The findings are as follows: Firstly, in the translation process, the frame operations used by the translator include frame correspondence, intra-frame operations, frame replacement, frame perspective shift and frame transplantation. Secondly, cultural documentaries are full of culture-loaded words, for which the translator usually uses frame transplantation. Thirdly, due to the instantaneous nature of subtitles, intra-frame operations and frame replacement are applied in terms of cultural background of the target language audience. Besides, in order to enhance the audience’s reading experience, there may be some changes of narrative perspective in the English translation of cultural documentaries. 展开更多
